SAFETY WARNINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 17. Ziegler & Brown highly recommends the use of smoke detectors with any heating product, including this unit. If possible, install a smoke detector in a hallway adjacent to the room (to reduce the possibility of occasional false activation from the heat produced by the heater). If your local council codes require the smoke detectors to be in the same room, you must follow those requirements. Check with your local authority for requirements in your area. 18. Recommended Flue Configuration: Any configuration listed in this manual has been approved for installation clearances according to AS For best performance we recommend a vertical flue configuration. 19. Type and Size of Flue: We recommend using a Maxiheat pellet heater flue system. Secure all flue joint connections with 3 screws. Seal the exhaust vent joint connections with high temperature silicone sealant. 20. Maintain proper ventilation. It is important that adequate oxygen be supplied to the fire for the combustion process. Modern houses are often so well insulated that it may become necessary to open a window slightly or install an outside air vent to provide sufficient combustion air. 21. HEATER WILL BE HOT WHILE IN OPERATION. KEEP CHILDREN, CLOTHING AND FURNITURE AWAY FROM THE HEATER. CONTACT MAY CAUSE SKIN BURNS. YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE SUPERVISED WHEN THEY ARE IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE HEATER. 22. DO NOT INSTALL A FLUE DAMPER IN THE EXHAUST VENTING SYSTEM OF THIS UNIT. 23. DO NOT CONNECT THIS UNIT TO A CHIMNEY FLUE SERVING ANOTHER APPLIANCE OR ANY AIR DISTRIBUTION DUCT OR SYSTEM. SINCE THE HEATER SUPPLIER HAS NO CONTROL OVER THE INSTALLATION OF YOUR HEATER, THE HEATER SUPPLIER GRANTS NO WARRANTY IMPLIED OR STATED FOR THE INSTALLATION OR MAINTENANCE OF YOUR HEATER. THEREFORE, THE HEATER SUPPLIER ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE(S). 4

INSTALLATION GENERAL NOTES Before beginning the installation of your heater, you should note the following precautions: - WARNING: THE APPLIANCE AND FLUE-SYSTEM SHALL BE INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH AS/NZS 2918 AND THE APPROPRIATE REQUIREMENTS OF THE RELEVANT BUILDING CODE OR CODES. - CAUTION: CRACKED AND BROKEN COMPONENTS, e.g. GLASS PANELS OR CERAMIC TILES, MAY RENDER THE INSTALLATION UNSAFE. - It is strongly recommended that a certified/qualified installer perform the installation. - You may need to get council approval prior to installation. - You should also check with your insurer for any requirements they may have. - Ensure all visible joints are sealed. HEARTH REQUIREMENTS If your pellet heater is to be installed on carpet, timber or any other combustible material, you must place a hearth (also known as a floor protector) underneath the heater. Please observe the following: - The hearth must consist of at least 6 mm of non-combustible material for a freestanding heaters or 75 mm of non-combustible material for an inbuilt heater. - It is not recommended that you make your own hearth - The hearth and heater assembly must be placed on a firm and level surface. FLUE INSTALLATION The correct flue system is critical to the performance of your pellet heater. It must either be tested with the heater or be a default flue kit. 7 INSTALLATION FREESTANDING HEATERS ONLY DO NOT CONNECT THIS UNIT TO A CHIMNEY FLUE SERVING ANOTHER APPLIANCE. NOTE: WHERE PASSAGE THROUGH A WALL OR PARTITION OF COMBUSTIBLE CONSTRUCTION IS DESIRED, THE INSTALLATION SHALL CONFORM TO AS/NZ LOCATION Select a location for your heater with great care. - Do not place your heater in areas of high traffic, near furniture or draperies. - Check that the intended location will not interfere with ceiling joists, rafters, valleys and ridges. Be sure to maintain the structural integrity of your home when passing a vent through walls, ceilings, or roofs. FLOOR PROTECTION It is necessary to ensure that the heater is positioned on the hearth so that the requirements below are observed. 7

INSTALLATION FREESTANDING HEATERS ONLY CLEARANCES It is vital that the heater be installed the proper distance from combustible surfaces like wood, gyprock and curtains. The diagrams below show both parallel and corner installations. Failure to maintain these minimum distances may result in a fire for which your insurer may refuse to cover. Komfort Flamme 8

INSTALLATION FLAMME INBUILT ONLY ASSEMBLY There is a small amount of assembly required for the Flamme Inbuilt model. BAFFLE ASSEMBLY Ensure the baffle is installed in the firebox. It is located at the top of the firebox and locates on the two lugs inside the firebox. 9

INSTALLATION FLAMME INBUILT ONLY Refer to clearances as specified on the following pages and select a position for your heater. Allow for clearances in roof for flue system. Ensure heater is clear of any combustible materials within specified clearances. Install the flue through roof to manufacturer s specifications to comply with the latest version of AS/NZS The heater must be installed by a certified installer. CAVITY DIMENSIONS Locate the timber frame around the heater. You will need to adhere to the clearance dimensions below. The timber frame shown below is an example only. AIR VENT Ventilation to the enclosure is required for air flow into the enclosure. Air vents can be placed on the side of the enclosure or on the front. The diagram shows the air vents on the side. The mantelpiece installation clearances are to combustible materials and are a minimum unless otherwise specified. Please note the mantle upright should be no thicker than 40 mm. 11

USING YOUR HEATER FUEL This heater uses wood pellet fuel only. Do not use any other type of fuel. The diameter should be 6-8 mm, the length no more than 35 mm, moisture content no more than 10% and ash content no more than 1%. Please take care of the pellets. Do not dampen or crush it - this will affect the efficiency and the dust will collect on the door glass. Pellet quality is important. The performance of your heater is greatly affected by the type and quality of wood pellets being burned. As the heat output of various quality wood pellets differs, so will the performance and heat output of the pellet heater. CAUTION: It is important to select and use only pellets that are dry and free of dirt or any impurities. Dirty fuel will adversely affect the operation and performance of the unit and will void the warranty. We recommend MAXIHEAT WOOD PELLETS for use in this appliance. These are available from the outlet where you purchased your Ziegler & Brown heater. Store pellets at least 1 metre away from the pellet heater. ASH CONTENT The ash content of the fuel and operation of your heater will directly determine the frequency of cleaning. The use of high ash fuels may result in the heater needing to be cleaned daily. A low ash fuel may allow longer intervals between cleaning. CLINKERS Clinkers are formed when dirt, ash or impurities in the fuels are heated to an extremely high temperature and become glass like. These solid clumps are referred to as clinkers. The type of fuel you burn can affect the occurrence of clinkers. Any fuel, even approved types, may tend to form clinkers. Check the burn pot liner daily to ensure that the holes are not blocked with clinkers. ELECTRICAL The use of a surge protected power board is recommended. The unit must be grounded (earthed). The grounded electrical cord should be connected to a standard 240 volts (6 Amps), 50 hertz electrical outlet. Ensure that the electrical cord is not trapped under the appliance and that it is clear of any hot surfaces or sharp edges and is accessible. If this power cord should become damaged, a replacement power cord must be purchased from a reputable dealer. GLASS Do not abuse the glass by striking or slamming the door. Do not attempt to operate the heater with broken glass. Replacement glass must be purchased from an authorised dealer. Do not attempt to open the door and clean the glass while the unit is in operation or if glass is hot. FRESH AIR An outside fresh air connection is optional. Consider all large air moving devices when installing your unit and provide room air accordingly. Limited air for combustion may result in poor performance, smoking and other side effects of poor combustion. 12

Open the closest outside door and any windows to eliminate the home s natural draft. Wait for power to be restored and then press the On button to re-start the heater, if necessary. We highly recommend the use of a surge protector with your unit, as power surges and failures can affect the operation of any electrical appliance. WARNING: DO NOT OVERFIRE THIS HEATER. This may cause serious damage to your heater and void your warranty. It may also create a fire hazard in your home. IF ANY EXTERNAL PART OF THE UNIT BEGINS TO GLOW, YOU ARE OVERFIRING. Immediately press the On/Off button on the control panel. DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR HEATER. 18

MAINTENTANCE MAINTENANCE MUST ONLY BE DONE WHEN THE HEATER IS COLD AND THE POWER IS OFF AND UNPLUGGED. Please be aware that any metal parts in the firebox can remain hot, even after the fire is out and after the shut down cycle is complete. Always use caution when handling any heater parts. ASH REMOVAL While the amount of ash generated by this unit is not excessive compared to wood heaters, keeping the unit clean and free of ash is essential for peak performance. Excessive ash build up can hamper the air flow and reduces the heater s efficiency, and can cause smoke. The following components require regular maintenance to keep ash and dust levels at a minimum: 1. Burn Pot Liner: Using a long handled metal scraper or long handled flat tipped screwdriver, remove material that has accumulated or is clogging the burn pot liner holes. Dispose of the ashes from the burn pot liner and from inside the burn pot to ensure proper air flow through the liner. 2. Heat Exchange Tube: Close the door. The heat exchange tube cleaner rod is to be pulled back and forth a few times in order to clean away any fly ash that may have collected on the heat exchanger tubes 3. Ash Drawer: Shut the unit down and allow it to cool down completely and then remove the ashes from the ash drawer with a metal scoop. IMPORTANT: If you see smoke coming out of your unit into the room and the power has not failed, DO NOT OPEN THE HOPPER OR DOOR TO YOUR UNIT. Remain calm. Immediately press the OFF button, open the nearest outside door and windows and wait for all signs of smoke to clear. The smoke should dissipate quickly once the door and windows are opened. DISPOSAL OF ASHES When disposing of the ashes, place them in a metal or other non-combustible container with a tight fitting lid. Move them outdoors immediately to an area clear of combustible materials. Do not place them into plastic receptacles. CLINKERS Clinkers can restrict the air flow through the burn pot and affect the performance of the heater. If they become blocked, remove the liner when the unit is cold and clean/scrape the clinkers out. Clean the holes with a small pointed object if required. DOOR Clean the door glass and door frame with a wet soft cloth and cleanser regularly. Surface scratches are acceptable and normal, but if the glass becomes cracked in any area, it will need to be replaced. Ensure all gaskets on the door are checked and replaced when necessary. 19

MAINTENANCE CREOSOTE BUILD UP The products of combustion will contain small particles of fly ash. The fly ash will collect in the exhaust venting system and restrict the flow of flue gases. This build up is called creosote. Incomplete combustion, which can occur during startup, shutdown, or incorrect operation of the heater, will lead to some creosote build up which will collect in the exhaust venting system. The exhaust venting system should be inspected at least once every year to determine if cleaning is necessary. CARBON REMOVAL During normal operation, carbon from the combustion of pellet fuel will tend to build up on the tip of the auger, on the burn pot liner, sides of the burn pot, and in the mouth of the feed tube. It is essential that this residue be removed to ensure trouble free operation of the unit. To remove this carbon, simply scrape it off using the blade of a flat tipped screwdriver or similar instrument. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Prior to burn season - Inspect the heater, including the ash drawer, burn pot and hopper and ensure they are clear of any foreign materials. - Inspect and clean the exhaust vent and flue system, if necessary. Daily (or whenever using the heater) - Before each burn, check the burn pot for clinkers and clean if necessary. Weekly - Remove any ash from the grate, heat exchange tubes and ash drawer. - Check the door glass. If the view of the burn pot is obscured, clean the door glass. Do NOT clean door glass when hot. At end of burn season - Ensure heater has been shut down completely and cooled down. - Remove the burn pot liner, and clean it thoroughly, and re-install it. - Remove all the ash from the ash drawer. - Check all painted surfaces. If there is any wear or exposed surfaces, touch up paint is available from your dealer. Ensure you use a high temperature paint made specifically for heating appliances. - Check for air leaks around the door and ash drawer and replace gaskets if necessary. - Clean the flue. This will prevent corrosives to build up and damage the flue. 20
