Driving & Safety Introduction Towing the recreational vehicle may be an unfamiliar experience. Find out what gears are right for the vehicle. For sharp turns, reduce speed and swing wide after considering other traffic and obstacles in the intersection; do not be afraid to pull well into the intersection before making a turn. Proper braking is extremely important for safety. Total weight towed is much greater than a car, or even a small truck. Anticipate traffic signals, stop signs and side traffic. Decelerate slowly, whenever possible, to prevent undue wear on brakes, tires, etc. When passing a semi, bus or other large vehicle from either direction, air turbulence may cause the recreational vehicle to sway slightly. Improper use of a recreational vehicle may cause physical damage and/or personal injury to the vehicle operator, occupants and others in the vicinity. Other precautions include: Never exceed posted speed limit; reduce speed when required by weather, traffic or road conditions. Use extreme caution when going downhill. Excessive speed may cause loss of control. Never attempt to pass on a curve or anywhere the view of the road ahead is restricted. Always check recreational vehicle brakes, lights and breakaway switch before starting out on a long trip Confirm that brakes are applied evenly. Uneven braking will pull the recreational vehicle to one side, which may cause a loss of control when towing. Know and observe laws where traveling; they may vary from state to state. WARNING: DO NOT RIDE OR ALLOW OTHERS TO RIDE INSIDE THE recreational vehicle WHILE IT IS BEING TOWED. Seat belts are not installed in the recreational vehicle because recreational vehicles are not designed or intended to carry passengers while in transit. It is not recommend that pets travel inside the recreational vehicle during travel. We will not be responsible for any injury or harm resulting from persons or pets traveling inside the recreational vehicle. Many states prohibit person(s) from riding inside the recreational vehicle during travel. Tow Vehicle It is important that the recreational vehicle is matched with an appropriate tow vehicle. A tow vehicle with an inadequate gross combined weight rating (GCWR) may experience mechanical failures and may not provide adequate towing stability. Consult the dealer for help in selecting the vehicle hitch and related hitching accessories. Towing the recreational vehicle with an inadequate tow vehicle can cause premature wear, fractures and/or breaks in the recreational vehicle frame. Tips For Driving Due to the recreational vehicle length, the turning radius is much wider than a standard automobile. Always pay close attention to the perimeters: front, sides, rear, roof and undercarriage. Make sure the surrounding area is clear of any obstacles. Use driving mirrors to observe traffic and the area of the recreational vehicle: tires, bay doors, blind spots, etc. Use a push-pull method of steering, with both hands parallel on the steering wheel. Swerves and sharp turns, especially performed at high speeds, could result in the loss of control of the tow vehicle and the recreational vehicle. Keep in mind the size of the vehicle combination. Drive with extra caution to avoid situations which might require quick momentum changes. Increase reaction time by paying attention to traffic and road conditions 12 to 15 seconds ahead. When passing another vehicle, allow extra time and space due to the additional length and weight. Practice using the brakes away from traffic to get the feel of the distance required to stop the tow vehicle and recreational vehicle. Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer 2006 Driving & Safety Section 2 15

When traveling, make sure bridges can support the combined weight of the tow vehicle and recreational vehicle. Tonnage limits for bridges should be posted at entrances. Check the posted height of overhead clearances. Keep in mind road surfaces may have been repaved or become packed with snow. Therefore, the actual posted clearance height would not apply. If a problem occurs, do not panic. If a sudden bumping or fish-tailing, occurs, it may indicate a flat tire. Do not jam on the brakes or suddenly accelerate in an attempt to drive out of it. Instead, come to a stop slowly while driving as straight as possible. If conditions permit, coast to a very slow speed and try to avoid braking, except when the wheels are straight ahead and the recreational vehicle and tow vehicle are in line with each other. If the recreational vehicle begins to fishtail when accelerated to highway speed, back off the accelerator. This should stop the fish-tailing. If it begins again when speed increases, stop and check the load, which may not be distributed evenly from side to side, or is too far back to put a sufficient load on the hitch pin. Load recommendations for the fifth wheel hitch are that 20 to 25% of the recreational vehicle load be on the hitch pin. For a travel trailer, load recommendations are that 10 to 15% of the travel trailer load be on the hitch pin. Redistribute the load, as necessary, before continuing. Driving Cautions: Avoid getting too close to the edge of the road, a soft shoulder may not support the weight of the recreational vehicle. Side spacing is best maintained by keeping the recreational vehicle centered in the lane. Driving lanes in work zones can be uneven, congested and more narrow than usual. Be cautious of road debris which can damage the undercarriage of the recreational vehicle or cause damage to the tires or wheel rims. Keep in consideration that posted speed signs are for passenger automobiles. Therefore, use extra awareness of the driving conditions and an appropriate speed for a vehicle pulling a recreational vehicle, especially on corners and mountain roads. Downgrade speed should be at least 5 mph less than upgrade speed, or downgrade speed should be attainable within three seconds of a brake application. Use a four second rule when following other vehicles at speeds under 40 mph. Use a five second rule when following at speeds over 40 mph. Right Turns: Negotiating a right-hand turn while pulling a recreational vehicle can be difficult. Many drivers fear they can not make the turn without entering into the other lane or jumping the curb. A right-hand turn can be negotiated well using these tips: As the turn approaches, look into the mirror to ensure the lane to the left is clear, then move wide over to the left. When about to make the turn; the left rear wheel should touch the centerline of the road and hips should be parallel to the roadside curb of the corner being turned. This will aid in avoiding a premature turn. Make the turn slowly. Check mirrors frequently. Be aware of necessary clearance and space management for the recreational vehicle, while negotiating the turn. Left Turns: Start the turn when the center of the intersection is reached with your hips b 16 Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer

Night Driving: Be well rested and alert when driving. If necessary, find a safe stopping place to rest until ready to continue. Avoid using any interior lights while driving. They can create a glare on the windshield, decreasing visibility. Dim the dash lights to a comfortable level to reduce the level of glare. Extreme Heat and Hot Weather Conditions: Check tire pressure frequently when traveling in hot conditions. Tire air pressure increases with heat. Do not let air out of a hot tire. When the tires cool down they return to the previous tire pressure. Winter and Cold Climate Conditions: Keep speeds slow and steady; make moves gradually and increase the visual distance for a gain in reaction time. If the road or weather conditions are treacherous, find a safe stopping place and wait for conditions to improve. Remove any ice build-up from the entry step to avoid accidental slipping. Wet Conditions: The risk of hydroplaning is increased if tires are worn or improperly inflated. Be aware that heavy rain or standing water can affect brake application, causing them to apply unevenly or grab. Refueling: Be aware of the fuel port location on the tow vehicle. There may not be adequate space to turn around in the parking lot in order to reposition for the pump. Check overhead clearance before pulling through the fuel island. Be aware of the concrete/steel posts installed around the fuel island. Avoid running over the fuel hose as it can get caught and cause damage to the tow vehicle or recreational vehicle. WARNING: Avoid the risk of fire or explosion. Turn off all pilot lights and appliances before refueling. Checklist - Trip Preparation The suggestions below are a general guideline when preparing for a trip. Items to Carry: Local, State and National Maps. Truck atlases can be useful for showing maps, refueling stations and truck repair facilities. An emergency road kit and flashlight. Potable/non-potable water hoses and a water pressure regulator. An assortment of hand tools. 12 Volt DC test light may be helpful when speaking with a technician. A battery hydrometer to check the condition of battery electrolyte. An assortment of spare fuses. Because of special hitch requirements, only a truck can tow fifth wheels. A fifth wheel hitch is simply a coupling device for vehicles commonly known as a kingpin and fifth wheel assembly. Hitching the fifth wheel takes a few moments following a few simple procedures. Understand the hitch and hitching procedures before attempting to hitch the fifth wheel. Terms Used to Describe the Typical Fifth Wheel Hitch Components: Fifth Wheel Plate: Unit that contains hitch plate, plate jaws, and handle (mounted in the truck bed). Handle: Device used to release or lock the plate jaws. Hitch Plate: Wheel that allows the fifth wheel to rotate. Kingpin: The connecting device attached to a fifth wheel (designed to fit into the plate jaws mounted in the truck bed). Pin Box: Structure attached to the bottom front section of the fifth wheel frame (the pin is attached to the bottom). Plate Jaws: Holds the kingpin. Mounted in Truck Bed Side Rails: Support rails, bolted to the tow truck bed (supports the fifth wheel hitch) Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer

Connecting the Hitch Begin by backing the tow vehicle close to the fifth wheel. Some tow vehicles have a tail gate cutout for the kingpin to pass through, while other tow vehicles require the tailgate be lowered. Align the tow vehicle hitch with the fifth wheel hitch pin. Back up the tow vehicle so the hitches are about two feet apart. Move the hitch handle to unlock the plate jaws. Push the front power jacks switch or use the hand crank to raise the front fifth wheel hitch pin so that it clears the vehicle hitch (see Landing Legs ). Back up the tow vehicle so that the hitch parts are lined up. The closer the saddle slot is to the kingpin, the easier the hitching. Close the tailgate once the hitching parts are aligned. Watch closely and lower the fifth wheel front leveling jacks so that the kingpin is ¼ to ½ off the saddle prior to final backing and hook up. A kingpin set too high can jam the saddle mechanism; a kingpin set too low can cause friction between the hitch and push the fifth wheel. Back up the tow vehicle, as needed, to complete the coupling process. The process is complete when the kingpin seats firmly causing the locking mechanism to snap shut. Slide the kingpin-locking handle in place securing the kingpin. Different style hitches may vary in locking. It may be necessary to open the tailgate slightly to ensure the lock mechanism is in place. Flashlights will aid in viewing the dark hitch recesses. Put the truck in gear and slightly rock the hitch to make sure hitch is locked in place. Raise the fifth wheel front power jack legs off the ground slightly, pull out the leg lock pins, raise the lower legs all the way up and secure them in the powered upper legs with the lock pins. Raise the front power jacks all the way up. Hook the breakaway switch cable loop in place on the tow vehicle hitch assembly. The other end of the cable must be plugged into the switch located on top of the fifth wheel pin box. Test the switch periodically (see Breakaway Switch). Plug in the tow vehicle 12 Volt electrical connector to the fifth wheel connector. Install and adjust the rearview mirrors. Check the lighting system on the tow vehicle and fifth wheel: running lights, tail lights, stop lights and directional lights. Check inside the fifth wheel to make sure vents, windows and doors are closed. Check for load equalization. CAUTION: Always confirm the hitch is locked properly and the breakaway switch cable is secured before towing. Maintenance A lubrication point of major importance is the contact area where the pinbox plate rests on the hitch saddle. A liberal quantity of grease is often used on this surface, but that can be messy. After-market lubrication pads are also available, which can be attached to the pinbox plate to eliminate the need for grease. A typical type of lubrication pad is a thin sheet of graphite impregnated Teflon that is riveted to the pinbox plate. Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer 2006 Driving & Safety Section 2 19

When using lubrication pads make it a matter of routine maintenance to inspect for pad wear. Before and after each trip, all nuts, bolts, safety pins and other hitch related hardware should be inspected. 1. Inspect the kingpin box mounting bolts at least every 2,000 miles. Using a torque wrench, tighten kingpin box bolts to 60 to 70 ft. lbs. 2. Inspect the kingpin latch plate and saddle to make sure there is no evidence of excess wear or damage. 3. Inspect the kingpin, pin-box plate, and saddle to make sure there is no evidence of excess wear or damage. 4. Lubricate the latch bolt and pivot point of the latch plate with SAE 30 oil at least every six months. 5. Grease the load-bearing surfaces of the fifth wheel hitch with lithium based grease every 2,000 miles of operation to reduce wear and provide easier turning. As an alternative, use a grease-free lubrication pad between the hitch saddle and the pinbox plate. 6. Inspect and clean the hitch latch plate before each use. 7. Grease the pivot points between the rails and hitch with lithium-based grease every 2,000 miles of operation. 8. Replace all worn or damaged parts. Hitching the travel trailer Trailer hitches come in a variety of shapes and sizes of various applications. Generally speaking, trailer hitches are classified either weight carrying or weight-distributing. The best type depends entirely upon the tow vehicle and trailer size and weight. The weight-carrying type of hitch is used in applications where trailer weight is up to and including a maximum of 10,000 lbs., and where the weight and suspension of the tow vehicle can accommodate that load. Weight distributing hitches are normally used for heavier trailers up to 12,000 lbs. or when the weight and suspension of the tow vehicle in relation to the trailer weight requires redistribution of hitch weight. Be familiar with these terms when discussing hitch adjustment and evaluating hitch performance. Terms Used to Describe the Typical Travel Trailer Hitch Components: Receiver: Hitch platform fitted to the tow vehicle. Ball Mount: A removable steel component that fits into the receiver. The hitch ball and spring bars (only on load distributing hitches) are attached to it. Sway Control: Designed to lessen pivoting motion between tow vehicle and trailer when a ball-type hitch is used. Coupler: The ball socket at the front of the trailer A-frame that receives the hitch ball. Spring Bars: Load-leveling bars used to distribute hitch weight among all axles of tow vehicle and trailer in a load distributing ball-type hitch. Tongue Weight: The downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler with the trailer fully loaded b WARNING: Ensure the weight ratings of ball mount, tow ball and safety chains are equal to or greater than the load. The use of an extension to the receiver or extended ball mount will significantly reduce hitch receiver ratings. 20 Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer

Types of Hitches Weight-Carrying Hitch: The tow vehicle rear axles and tires, with a weight carrying hitch, must carry all trailer tongue weight. With heavier trailers this causes the vehicle to lower itself over the rear axle, causing a weight shift from the front wheels. This weight reduction causes front wheel camber to change and affects braking and steering performance. Weight-Distributing Hitch: Weight distributing hitches use special equipment to distribute the tongue load to all axles of the tow vehicle and trailer to help stabilize the tow vehicle.the hitch is part of the towing vehicle connecting mechanism including the ball support platform and ball. The hitch should meet the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards and be determined by the gross weight (including the load) of the trailer. It distributes the trailer tongue weight to both the front and rear wheels of the tow vehicle. By adjusting the chain links, spring and torsion bar, the tow vehicle and trailer are made to ride in the correct position. Information for mandatory hitch classification and hitch ball diameter required for properly towing a trailer is permanently marked on the trailer coupler. The dealer should check hitch ball height. Improper height may cause sway or other undesirable towing characteristics. Ask the dealer for assistance. Safety Chains Safety Chains are on the trailer to provide added insurance that the trailer will not detach from the tow vehicle when under way. It is highly recommended that the chains be crisscrossed under the trailer tongue. Attach the chain on the left side of the trailer tongue to the hole or ring on the right side of the hitch ball. Attach the chain on the right side of the trailer tongue to the hole or ring on the left side of the hitch ball. This prevents the tongue from dropping to the road if the trailer coupler separates from the hitch ball. Rig the chains with just enough slack to permit tight turns. Connecting the Hitch Hitching the Trailer: Inspect all hitch related hardware for tightness and damage. Back the tow vehicle as close as possible to the trailer. Release the coupler-locking device. Raise the trailer jack until the tongue socket clears the vehicle hitch ball. Back up the tow vehicle so that the hitch ball is directly under the trailer tongue socket. Lower the coupler until it is seated on the hitch ball. Check under the coupling to ensure the ball clamp is below the ball and not riding on top. Latch the coupler to the hitch ball. Ensure it is locked in place by lifting up the trailer tongue. Raise the jack completely. Store the foot. If using a weight-distributing hitch with spring bars, follow the above procedures, then attach spring bar chain to trailer and tighten until the trailer and tow vehicle are level. Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer 2006 Driving & Safety Section 2 21

Attach breakaway cable to the tow vehicle, allowing enough slack for making tight turns. The breakaway switch cable should be attached to a place on the tow vehicle separate from the hitch assembly. Periodically pull out the breakaway switch pin and attempt to drive forward. If the breakaway system is operating correctly the trailer wheels will not turn. Attach the safety chains. Safety chain connector should always be connected to hitch base plate or a location specified for this purpose. Never attach chains by looping them around hitch ball. Connect trailer wiring harness to lighting system of the tow vehicle and trailer. Drive forward and check the trailer brakes by applying the hand controls. Check inside the trailer to make sure the vents, windows and doors are closed. Confirm the hitch is locked properly before towing. Confirm bars are adjusted for proper load equalization. Ride Height Angle Ensure the trailer is level with the tow vehicle. If the hitch is too low, the nose of the trailer may drag on high spots in the road. If the hitch is too high, the tail end of the trailer may drag. Either of these conditions will affect trailer towability. When the tow vehicle and trailer are level, the suspension will work properly and within the design limits. If instability is still present, an Anti-Sway Hitch may be necessary to ensure a smooth safe ride and predictable performance. The trailer should be in a level position when hitched to the tow vehicle. Tow Plug Connection The recreational vehicle is equipped with a wire harness located on or near the pin box. Current draw should not exceed ten amps for each designated light circuit. The Tow Harness Wires are Color Coded: 1. White, 8 gauge - Ground 5. Red, 14 gauge - Left Turn 2. Blue, 12 gauge - Brake 6. Brown, 14 gauge - Right Turn 3. Green, 14 gauge - Clearance Lights 7. Yellow, 14 gauge - Backup Lights 4. Black, 14 gauge - Charge Line Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer

Backing Up The Recreational Vehicle When backing up the driver should be comfortable using the mirrors and/or the co-pilot s directions for assistance. Practice using the co-pilot s guidance in a large, unobstructed parking lot. Select a solid, level site, located on the roadside with a direct field of vision from the roadside mirror. If the site is on the curbside the driver will have to use the curbside mirror for backing up, which has a blind spot. When a potential site is located, stop before the site. Get out and observe the area for soft ground, posts, large rocks, low hanging limbs or other obstacles. When site conditions are satisfactory, prepare to back in carefully. Make a wide turn, then turn back the opposite direction to set the recreational vehicle in a position to maneuver into the space. When backing up a recreational vehicle the driver may become disoriented with the direction of the steering wheel and the direction of the recreational vehicle. Move the bottom of the steering wheel in the desired direction of the recreational vehicle. For example: If the desired direction of the recreational vehicle is left, rotate the bottom of the steering wheel left. If the recreational vehicle moves in an undesirable direction, use a short pullup method, pulling forward just far enough to align the recreational vehicle with the space. The co-pilot should stand safely at the left rear corner of the recreational vehicle within view of the driver in the roadside mirror using the five hand signals for guidance.signals are directing travel of the rear of recreational vehicle. If the desired direction of the recreational vehicle is left, the co-pilot points left. This type of directional signal is easily discerned in the mirror by the driver. Keep directional signals steady until movement is done. The Five Directional Signals are: 1. Co-pilot uses left hand and arm held horizontal with forefinger pointing right, to direct rear of recreational vehicle right. 2. Co-pilot uses right hand and arm held horizontal, with forefinger pointing left, to direct rear of recreational vehicle to the left. 3. Co-pilot uses both arms and hands parallel with thumbs pointing up and to rear in a waving vertical motion. This signals driver to maintain a straight back direction. 4. Co-pilot holds arms vertically, hands open with palms facing one another. Start with a wide separation of the hands. Gradually close the distance between them in a rate appropriate to vehicle speed to indicate the amount of distance to a stopping point. 5. Closed fists indicate STOP b Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer 2006 Driving & Safety Section 2 23

Parking & Leveling The selected site must be as level as possible. This will ease the leveling process. After backing in or pulling the recreational vehicle into the selected site, set the parking brake, turn the ignition switch OFF and proceed as follows: Fifth Wheel Operation: Securely chock all wheels of the recreational vehicle to prevent movement. Lower the landing gear (see LANDING LEGS ). Wooden blocks may be placed under the jack legs to assist in the leveling process. Pull out the left and right jack leg locking pins and allow the legs to rest on the ground or wooden blocks. Pick up the legs and secure them with the lock pins into the first available set of holes. Unhook the 12 Volt connector and the breakaway switch cable from the tow vehicle. Properly Chocked Wheel Activate the power jack switch, or use the hand crank, to slightly raise the front of the recreational vehicle hitch to relieve the hitch pressure. Release the hitch latch disengaging the locking bar. If applicable, slightly rock the tow vehicle in reverse to disengage locking bar. Pull forward slightly and raise the recreational vehicle hitch to clear the tow vehicle hitch. Open the tow vehicle tailgate if no special tailgate exists. Move the tow vehicle away from the recreational vehicle. Adjust the recreational vehicle front jacks to level the recreational vehicle front to rear. This will require a small level to be placed in the storage compartment below the controls. Many camping stores and RV dealerships carry small leveling vials that may be attached to the recreational vehicle. Lower stabilizing jacks until the jacks contact the ground or wooden blocks. The stabilizer jacks are not to be used for leveling. Connect the 120 Volt AC shore power. Open the LP-Gas valves at the LP tanks. Connect the fresh water supply and the water systems if necessary. If applicable, start the refrigerator, water heater and furnace. In extreme cases the use of leveling ramps under the tires may be necessary to level the recreational vehicle. Travel Trailer Operation: Securely chock all wheels of the travel trailer to prevent movement. Unhook the 12 Volt connector and the breakaway switch cable from the tow vehicle. Disconnect the jack leg to rest on the ground or on a wooden block. Wooden blocks may be placed under the jack leg to assist the leveling process. Release the hitch latch and raise the trailer coupler to clear the vehicle hitch. Move the tow vehicle away from the travel trailer. Adjust the travel trailer front jacks to level the travel trailer front to rear. This will require a small level to be placed in the storage compartment below the controls. Many camping stores and RV dealerships carry small leveling vials that may be attached to the travel trailer. Lower stabilizing jacks until the jacks contact the ground or wooden blocks. The stabilizer jacks should not be used for leveling on uneven ground or to change tires. 24 Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer

Landing Legs (Fifth Wheel) The landing legs of the fifth wheel are intended for positioning the fifth wheel during hook-up and unhooking from the tow vehicle. The landing legs also support the fifth wheel during camping and storage. The level of the fifth wheel provides comfort for the user and allows the refrigerator to operate properly. The legs are not designed for the sole support of the fifth wheel weight during tire changes or servicing. CAUTION: The landing leg weight rating is 5,000 lbs. per leg. DO NOT exceed the weight rating. The legs may bind in overload conditions. This will result in premature wear of the drive gear and stripping of the gear. Premature gear wear will also occur with excessive clutching of the motor. This occurs at maximum extension and retraction. Once clutch noise is heard, release the switch. Landing Legs Operation: After coupling fifth wheel to tow vehicle is complete, raise landing legs until lock pins near the end of the outside tubes. Release the lock pins, raise the drop tubes and engage lock pins so that drop tubes are in the highest possible positions. The fifth wheel is now ready to be towed. To uncouple the fifth wheel, position landing legs approximately 8 below the bottom edge of the outer tube. This allows movement for leveling. Release the lock pins and lower drop tubes so that foot pads contact the ground. Engage the lock pins in the holes that place the foot pads nearest to the ground. Lower legs to uncouple the fifth wheel b To Lower Legs with Electric Motor (Optional): Push the switch, located at the front of the fifth wheel, to the extend position and hold until the landing legs raise the fifth wheel to the desired height. Extend and retract indicate the travel direction of the legs, not the fifth wheel. To Raise Legs with with Electric Motor (Optional): Push the switch, located at the front of the fifth wheel, to the retract position and hold until the legs are fully retracted. Release the toggle switch as the lock pins in the inner ram tube nears the end of the outside tubes to avoid unnecessary wear on the motor clutch b Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer 2006 Driving & Safety Section 2 25

Landing legs may work with handle if the electric drive motor is inoperative or if electricity is unavailable. WARNING: The handle could cause injury. Remove the handle before using the electric motor. The handle may jerk, causing injury. Before towing, check for maximum clearance between the ground and the bottom of the landing gear. To Lower Legs Manually: To Lower the Landing Legs: Insert the handle into the alignment tube until the end engages the crank shaft. The shaft is located inside the roadside LP compartment. Turn the handle counterclockwise to raise fifth wheel. Do not retract the legs past the STOP label. Remove and store the handle b To Raise Legs Manually: Rotate the handle clockwise. Retract as far as possible with the handle. Release the lock pin and raise the drop tube, repinning it in the highest possible position. Remove and store the handle. Maintenance Schedule: Before each use INSPECT the drop tube and the inner ram tube, replacing if they are bent or damaged. Annually: Extend landing legs as far as possible, clean the drop tube and the inner ram tube. Coat the exposed surface of tubes with a silicone spray lubricant. Coat the inside of the handle alignment tube with a silicone spray lubricant. Oil the shaft bushing in gear box and leg gear heads with SAE 30 oil. Lubricate the gears in the gear box and the landing leg gear heads with extreme pressure grease. Every Six Months for the Electric Drive Motor Landing Legs: Check the wiring connections at the battery. Clean the terminals with a solution of baking soda and water. Cover the terminals with a thin coat of grease. The Electric Drive Motor is lubricated at the factory and requires no further lubrication. Hitch Jack (Travel Trailer) A hitch light is provided when visibility is limited. The hitch jack weight rating is 2,500 lbs. Rating is stamped on the mounting plate in the metal. Do not exceed the weight rating. Manual Extension/Retract: Rotate the crank handle clockwise to raise the trailer or counterclockwise to lower the trailer. Rotate the crank handle in the desired direction until the desired height is obtained Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer

WARNING: The handle could cause injury. The handle may jerk, causing injury. Before towing, check for maximum clearance between the ground and the bottom of the landing gear. Power Jack (Travel Trailer - Not on All Units) The power jack makes trailer positioning hassle free. A rugged 12 Volt DC gear motor provides quick and easy hitching and unhitching of the trailer. The operation is controlled by a single push button. A courtesy light is provided when visibility is limited. Manual operation can be used in case the battery power is lost. The power jack weight ratings is 2,500 lbs. Rating is stamped on the mounting plate in the metal. WARNING: Ensure the handle is not installed prior to operating the electric gear motor. Automatic Extend/Retract: Battery must be fully charged. Press the extend/retract switch for the desired direction. Hold the extend switch until desired height is obtained. Relase the extend/retract switch. Manual Extension/Retract: Insert the crank handle. Rotate the crank handle clockwise to raise the trailer. Rotate the crank handle counterclockwise to lower the trailer. Rotate the crank handle in the desired direction until the desired height is obtained. Remove the crank handle The landing leg may be operated with the handle if the electric drive motor is inoperative or if electricty is unavailable. WARNING: The handle could cause injury. Remove the handle before using the electric motor. The handle may jerk, causing injury. Before towing, check for maximum clearance between the ground and the bottom of the landing gear Stabilizer Jacks (Optional for Fifth Wheel) Stabilizing jacks, located at the two rear corners on the fifth wheel or at all four corners on the travel trailer, are permanently attached and operated from a standing position. These jacks are for stabilizing only. Primary leveling should be done with wheel ramps and fifth wheel front landing legs for the fifth wheel. For the travel trailer, primary leveling should be done with wheel ramps and travel trailer tongue jack. Lower the stabilizing jacks by turning the cranks clockwise until they contact the ground firmly. Place wooden blocks under the pads if necessary. Raise jacks by turning the cranks counterclockwise Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer 2006 Driving & Safety Section 2 27

WARNING: The stabilizer jack(s) must not be used for leveling on uneven ground or to change tires. Never use jack(s) to elevate any wheel off the ground. Damage to the stabilizer jack(s) and recreational vehicle main frame can occur. Checklist - Set-up Procedures The hook-up list is to only be used as a guide. The checklist has information on hooking up the utilities and preparing the appliances for use. Specific information on the slide room, awning and leveling operation is discussed in other sections. If applicable, unlock any travel locks which may be securing the slide room awning. Check for lateral clearance before extending the slide out room. Follow the procedures and guidelines for Parking & Leveling in this section. The parking surface needs to accommodate the weight placed on the jacks. Open the LP-Gas tank valve. If possible, begin appliance operation on LP-Gas for the first 60 minutes. Switch refrigerator operation to gas, start the water heater and furnace (if needed). Prepare the shore cord to be plugged in. Uncoil and inspect the cord. Connect power cord to shore power. (See Shore Power Hook-up in Section 8 of this manual.) If cable service is provided, hook-up a 75 Ohm RG59 or RG6 cable to the cable connection in the service center. A phone connection port is provided in the service center. Phone utility outlets are placed throughout the recreational vehicle. Hook a potable water hose to the city water connection in the service center. Turn the hand valves to indicate typical usage. A water pressure regulator attached between the city water faucet and the potable fresh water hose protects the hose from swelling or bursting under high city water pressure. Securing the pressure regulator to the hose with pliers will prevent the regulator from being misplaced. Hook-up the sewer hose. Sewer drain pipe diameters are generally either three or four inches. Proper sewer hose adapters will ensure against leaks or spillage. With the sewer hose properly connected open the grey water valve (small valve). The black water valve (large valve) remains closed until the tank is full or until time of departure. Dry Camping Dry camping requires fully charged and properly maintained batteris. If battery water is low, fill the batteris with distilled water only. Before departure, fill the fresh water tank and empty the waste holding tanks. When the fresh tank is low, the waste holding tanks will most likely be full. Be sure to empty the waste holding tanks gefore refilling the fresh water tank. If the trailer is equipped with solar panels, the first panel will offest the parasitic loads. The second panel (and adding a third if possible) will charge the batteris durign daylight hours. 28 Section Driving & Safety Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer
