1 STELLAR 2000 SINGLE PACKAGE HEAT PUMPS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION Supersedes: N1Y (892) N1Y (893) MODELS B1PA024, 030 AND GENERAL YORK Model B1PA units are factory assembled heat pumps designed for outdoor installation on a roof top or a slab. Field-installed electric heater accessories are available to provide supplemental electric heat combined with electric cooling and heating. The units are completely assembled on rigid, permanently attached base. All piping, refrigerant charge, and electrical wiring is factory installed and tested. The units require only electric power and duct connections at the point of installation. The electric heaters have nickel-chrome resistance wire elements and utilize single point power connection. INSPECTION As soon as a unit is received, it should be inspected for possible damage during transit. If damage is evident, the extent of the damage should be noted on the carrier s freight bill. A separate request for inspection by the carrier s agent should be made in writing. Refer to Form NM for additional information. 2 N1Y LIMITATIONS INSTALLATION LOCATION These units must be installed in accordance with the following national and local safety codes: 1. National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA No Local electric utility requirements. 3. Canadian Electrical Code C Canadian Installation Codes CAN1-B149. Refer to Table 1 for Unit Application Data and to Table 5 for Electric Heat Application Data. If components are to be added to a unit to meet local codes, they are to be installed at the dealer s and/or the customer s expense. Size of unit for proposed installation should be based on heat loss/heat gain calculation made according to the methods of Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). Use the following guidelines to select a suitable location for these units. 1. Unit is designed for outdoor installation only. 2. Outdoor coil must have an unlimited supply of air. 3. For ground level installation, use a level concrete slab with a minimum thickness of 4 inches. The length and width should be at least 6 inches greater than the unit base rails. Do not tie slab to the building foundation. 4. Roof structures must be able to support the weight of the unit and its accessories. Unit must be installed on a solid level roof curb or appropriate angle iron frame. 5. Maintain level tolerance to 1/8" maximum across the entire length or width of the unit. RIGGING AND HANDLING Exercise care when moving the unit. Do not remove any packaging until the unit is near the place of installation. Rig the unit by attaching chain or cable slings to the lifting holes provided in the base rails. Spreaders, whose length exceeds the largest dimension across the unit, MUST be used across the top of the unit. BEFORE LIFTING A UNIT, MAKE SURE THAT ITS WEIGHT IS DISTRIBUTED EQUALLY ON THE CABLES SO THAT IT WILL LIFT EVENLY. Units may also be moved or lifted with a fork-lift. LENGTH OF FORKS MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 42". Remove the nesting brackets from the four corners on top of the unit. All screws that are removed when taking these brackets off must be replaced on the unit. Refer to Table 2 for unit weights and to Figure 1 for approximate center of gravity. 3 APPROXIMATE CENTER OF GRAVITY FRONT FILTERS N1Y A high velocity filter must be field supplied. Filters must always be used ahead of indoor coil and must be kept clean or replaced with same size and type. Dirty filters will reduce the capacity of the unit and will result in frosted coils or safety shutdown. 32-1/ / / CONDENSATE DRAINS The drain connection (indoor coil) is 3/4" FPT and must be trapped a minimum of 1 inch to provide proper drainage. Plumbing must conform to local codes. FIG. 1 - CENTER OF GRAVITY CLEARANCES All units require certain clearances for proper operation and service. Refer to Figure 3 for the clearances required for combustible construction, servicing, and proper unit operation. WARNING:Do not permit overhanging structures or shrubs to obstruct outdoor air discharge outlet. DUCT WORK Duct work should be designed and sized according to the methods in Manual Q of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). A closed return duct system shall be used. This shall not preclude use of economizers or outdoor fresh air intake. The supply and return air duct connections at the unit should be made with flexible joints to minimize noise. CAUTION: When fastening duct work to side duct flanges on unit, insert screws through duct flanges only. DO NOT insert screws through casing. Outdoor duct work must be insulated and waterproofed. SERVICE ACCESS Access to all serviceable components is provided by three removable panels: Electric heat compartment access panel. Control compartment access panel. Blower service compartment access panel. Refer to Figure 3 for location of these access panels. THERMOSTAT The room thermostat should be located on an inside wall approximately 56" above the floor where it will not be subject to drafts, sun exposure or heat from electrical fixtures or appliances. Follow manufacturer s instructions enclosed with thermostat for general installation procedure. Seven color coded insulated wires (#18 AWG) should be used to connect thermostat to unit. See Figure 2 for wiring details. CAUTION: Make the low voltage wiring connection for the defrost control in the outdoor unit by stripping the wire to 3/8" and placing it in the wire channel. Do not wrap it around the screw. Make sure there is no wire insulation under the screw head. Do not over tighten. 4 N1Y POWER AND CONTROL WIRING Field wiring to the unit must conform to provisions of the National Electrical Code, ANSI / NFPA 70 and/or local ordinances. The unit must be electrically grounded in accordance with N.E.C. ANSI / NFPA 70 or local codes. Voltage tolerances which must be maintained at the compressor terminals during starting and running conditions are indicated on the unit Rating Plate and Table 1. The wiring harness furnished with this unit is an integral part of a UL and C.S.A. design certified unit. Field alteration to comply with electrical codes should not be required. A disconnect switch should be field provided for the unit. The switch must be separate from all other circuits. Refer to Figure 3 for installation locations. If any of the wire supplied with the unit must be replaced, replacement wire must be of the type shown on the wiring diagram. Electrical line must be sized properly to carry the load. USE COPPER CONDUCTORS ONLY. Each unit must be wired with a separate branch circuit fed directly from the meter panel and properly fused. Refer to Figure 2 for typical field wiring and to the appropriate unit wiring diagram for control circuit and power wiring information. Refer to Table 3 for electrical data. UNIT HIGH VOLTAGE TERMINAL BLOCK POWER WIRING CRANKCASE HEATER The crankcase heater is energized whenever the compressor is not running. Check for proper operation by feeling for heat on the compressor where the heater is installed. The heater should be energized for at least 8 hours before the thermostat is set to operate the compressor. CAUTION: An attempt to start the compressor without at least 8 hours of crankcase heat will damage the compressor. A warning label pertaining to supplying power to the crankcase heater is supplied with the installation instruction packet of the unit. This should be attached to the disconnect switch where the occupant is most likely to see it. IMPORTANT IF POWER HAS BEEN OFF FOR 8 HOURS OR LONGER, DISCONNECT SWITCH MUST BE TURNED ON 8 HOURS BEFORE THERMOSTAT IS SET TO HEAT, COOL OR AUTO A COMPRESSORS On some units the compressor is mounted on springs which have been tightened down for shipment only. After this unit is installed, back out the compressor bolts until the sleeve clears the top grommet. CAUTION: Do Not loosen compressor mounting bolts. Overhanging structures or shrubs should not obstruct condenser air discharge outlet. NOTE: A 1" clearance must be provided between any combustible material and the supply air ductwork. 7 WITH POWER TO UNIT AND THERMOSTAT IN COOLING POSITION. Cooling operation is the same as any conventional air conditioning unit. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION N1Y 4. System will cycle with thermostat demand to provide cooling as needed. WITH POWER TO UNIT AND THERMOSTAT IN HEATING POSITION The following checks may be made to determine if the system is operating properly: 1. The outdoor fan should be running, with warm air being discharged from the top of the unit. 2. The indoor blower will be operating, discharging cool air from the supply duct. 3. The vapor line at the outdoor will feel cool to the touch. 4. The liquid line at the outdoor will feel warm to the touch. See Figure 4 to trace the flow of refrigerant through the system. 1. Reversing valve is energized through thermostat system switch to position refrigerant circuit for cooling operation. In the cooling cycle, discharge gas is pumped to the outdoor coil which is the condenser. The indoor coil is the evaporator. 2. If fan switch is in ON position, a circuit is made through blower relay to provide continuous blower operation. 3. When thermostat cooling contact closes, a circuit is made to energize contactor and start the system. With fan switch in AUTO position, a circuit is made from thermostat cooling contact through blower relay to provide blower operation. See Figure 4 to trace the flow of refrigerant through the system. 1. Reversing valve is de-energized to position refrigerant circuit for heating operation. In the heating cycle, discharge gas is pumped to the indoor coil which is the condenser. The outdoor coil is the evaporator. 2. If fan switch is in ON position, a circuit is made through blower relay to provide continuous blower operation. 3. When first stage of thermostat heating contact closes, a circuit is made through the control to energize contactor and start the system. With fan switch in AUTO position, a circuit is made from thermostat heating contact through blower relay to provide blower operation. 4. The system will cycle in response to thermostat signal to provide heating as needed. 5. Supplemental electric heaters are energized by second stage of heating thermostat. DEFROST CYCLE Frost and ice which forms on the outdoor coil during the heating cycle must be defrosted when it blocks the air flow through the coil. 8 different sections of the coil. However, a normal defrost may occur even though the coil is not completely covered with frost. Three requirements must be met before a defrost cycle can be initiated. 1. A minimum of 39 minutes must have elapsed since last defrost. CAUTION: Prior to any of the following maintenance procedures, shut off all power to the unit to prevent personal injury. Periodic maintenance normally required consists of changing or cleaning filters. FILTERS (Field Installed) - Inspect once a month. Replace disposable or clean permanent type as necessary. DO NOT replace permanent type with disposable. MAINTENANCE 2. The liquid line temperature must be less than 40 F. 3. The coil temperature must be below the defrost initiation temperature for 4.5 minutes continuously. Defrost will terminate when the coil temperature reaches 75 F or after 14 minutes defrost time. NOTE: Exercise care when cleaning the coil so that the coil fins are not damaged. Do not permit the outdoor air discharge to be obstructed by overhanging structures of shrubs. NOTICE TO OWNER: If lock-out occurs, check the following before calling a serviceman: MOTORS - Indoor blower motor and outdoor fan motors are permanently lubricated and require no maintenance. OUTDOOR - Dirt should not be allowed to accumulate on the outdoor coil surface or other parts in the air circuit. Cleaning should be as often as necessary to keep coil clean. Use a brush, vacuum cleaner attachment, or other suitable means. If water is used to clean coil, be sure power to the unit is shut off prior to cleaning. 1. Indoor section for dirty filter. 2. Outdoor section for snow accumulation. 3. Outdoor section for leaf or debris blockage. Eliminate problem, turn off the thermostat for 10 seconds and attempt start. Wait 5 minutes.
