10 3 REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS 3.1. Lower Plate Replacement Removal 1. Place the Carpet/Bare Floor pedal in the carpet position and the handle in the upright position. 2. Turn the vacuum cleaner over exposing the underside. Release the lower plate by removing the two (2) screws and depressing the two locking tabs that secure the lower plate. 3. Remove the lower plate and remove any residue that may exist in the belt area Installation 1. Hook the front of the lower plate into the slots on the front of the nozzle housing. Press the lower plate down until the locking tabs snap into place. 2. Replace the two (2) lower plate mounting screws. NOTE: For general servicing, it is necessary to eliminate pinching of any wire during reassembly. After servicing any electrical component or electrical enclosure, the unit should be reassembled and checked for dielectric breakdown or current leakage Headlight Bulb Replacement NOTE: The light bulb assembly must be removed to install the new bulb Installation 1. A standard bayonet base appliance bulb rated 120 VAC, 15 Watts should be used. NOTE: Do not use a bulb rated over 15 Watts. During Extended use, heat from the bulb could overheat the surrounding plastic parts. 2. To install a new bulb, press it down into the bulb socket and turn it clockwise until it locks into place. 3. Reinsert the light bulb assembly back into place by sliding it back down into the slot in the nozzle housing. Replace the lower plate by following the LOWER PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION instructions. 4. Return the cleaner to the upright position Agitator Assembly Replacement Removal 1. Remove the lower plate as outlined in the LOWER PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION section. 2. Carefully lift up on the agitator assembly until it clears both sides of the nozzle housing Removal 1. Remove the lower plate as instructed in the LOWER PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION section. 2. Grasp the bulb socket, wiggle the socket back and forth while pulling it up out of the nozzle housing. This will separate it from the nozzle housing slot. 3. The bulb can be removed by pushing it down into the bulb socket and turning it counterclockwise. 3. Remove the belt from the motor shaft by sliding it off between the end of the shaft and the nozzle housing. 10

11 Installation 1. Place the belt around the motor shaft. 2. Start the new agitator assembly back into the nozzle housing by placing the side opposite the belt partially into the slot. This will hold the agitator in place and leave both hands free to place enough tension on the belt to allow that side of the agitator to return to the nozzle housing slot. 3. Place the belt around the agitator pulley on the agitator assembly. NOTE: There is a place for the belt to fit on one end of the agitator assembly only. This is the agitator pulley. 4. Use both hands to pull the belt tight, and slide the agitator assembly firmly into the slots on each end of the nozzle housing Belt Replacement Removal 1. Follow all of the instructions outlined in the AGITATOR ASSEMBLY removal/installation section Installation 1. Place the new belt around the motor shaft and follow the instructions in the AGITATOR ASSEMBLY removal/installation section CARPET/BARE FLOOR AND HANDLE RELEASE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT Removal 1. Place the carpet/bare floor pedal in the carpet position. Insert a screwdriver under the back of the pedal cover and pry up to remove it from the pedal assembly. Take care not to scratch the nozzle housing. 5. Rotate the agitator assembly by hand to insure nothing rubs and to check for correct assembly. 6. Replace the lower plate as outlined in the LOWER PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION section. NOTE: Every time the pedal cover is removed for any reason, it should be replaced with a new one. See Nozzle Exploded View and Parts List for correct replacement part number. 2. Turn the vacuum over and remove the lower plate, belt and agitator as outlined in their respective removal sections. 3. Remove the nozzle housing by following the instructions located in the NOZZLE HOUSING AND SHORT HOSE REPLACEMENT section. 4. Remove the three (3) screws that secure the carpet/bare floor & handle release assembly to the nozzle housing. 5. Remove the pedal/frame assembly by sliding it out through the bottom of the nozzle housing. 6. Once the carpet/bare floor & handle release assembly is out it can be disassembled for parts replacement as shown in the Exploded View diagram. NOTE: For general servicing, it is necessary to eliminate pinching of any wire during reassembly. After servicing any electrical component or electrical enclosure, the unit should be reassembled and checked for dielectric breakdown or current leakage. 11

12 Installation 1. Slide the carpet/bare floor & handle release assembly back into the slot in the nozzle housing. 2. Replace the three screws that hold the frame and pedal shaft onto the nozzle housing. 6. Remove the nozzle housing as illustrated. 3. Install the new pedal cover by pushing it onto the pedal assembly until the tab snaps into place. 4. Replace the nozzle housing as directed in the NOZZLE HOUSING AND SHORT HOSE REPLACEMENT section. 5. Install the belt, agitator assembly, and the lower plate according to the respective instructions Nozzle Housing Replacement Removal 1. Remove the lower plate as outlined in the LOWER PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION section. 2. Remove the belt and agitator assembly as outlined in the respective sections. 3. Remove the nozzle hose, for nozzle hose replacement by pulling it up out of the nozzle housing and then pulling it, while twisting, out of the tool holder. 4. Remove the headlight assembly and slider support by following the instructions relating to the removal of these items. Pull the headlight wires from the grooves in the nozzle housing. 5. Insert a flat blade screwdriver between the nozzle housing and the plastic shaft, pry out the plastic shaft as illustrated. 7. Remove the handle release assembly and furniture guard. 8. Remove the light cover and window, by removing the two (2) screws from the nozzle housing and pushing out on the light cover while depressing the tab that secures it to the nozzle housing. NOTE: If the motor case cover is removed, DO NOT turn vacuum over as the motor may fall out Installation 1. Install the window, light cover, handle release assembly, and furniture guard in the new nozzle housing. 2. Fit the nozzle from the motor shaft side first, and rotate it into place on the dust container as illustrated. 3. Slide the plastic shaft through the nozzle housing and into the dust container. Make sure that the slot on the bottom of the plastic shaft is down and fitted onto the projection. Place the headlight wires back into their grooves. 12

13 4. Install the slider support. Install the headlight assembly by following the assembly instructions. 5. Reassemble the nozzle hose by inserting it into the tool holder then place the other end into the nozzle housing with the tab fitting into the slot. 6. Install the belt, agitator assembly, and the lower plate according to the respective instructions. NOTE: For general servicing, it is necessary to eliminate pinching of any wire during reassembly. After servicing any electrical component or electrical enclosure, the unit should be reassembled and checked for dielectric breakdown or current leakage On-Off Switch Replacement Removal 1. Remove the handle screw and slide the handle back to free the switch cover tab. 2. Remove the dust cover. Remove the two (2) screws that secure the switch cover, then pull straight out on the switch cover to remove it from the dust compartment Installation 1. Insert the new on-off switch by placing it back in the reverse manner by which it was removed. Position the switch so that OFF is on top and the writing on the switch body is facing you when viewed in the dust container. Connect lead wires. Tuck the wire connectors back into the dust compartment. 2. Replace the handle, switch cover, and the dust cover. Care should be taken not to pinch any wires. NOTE: For general servicing, it is necessary to eliminate pinching of any wire during reassembly. After servicing any electrical component or electrical enclosure, the unit should be reassembled and checked for dielectric breakdown or current leakage Motor Protector Replacement Removal 1. Remove the dust cover and dust bag. 2. Remove the motor protector cover, (shown in the exploded view in the Body section), by releasing one of the tabs that secure it to the dust compartment. Take care not to break the tabs during removal. 3. Remove the on-off switch by depressing the switch retaining tabs while pushing the switch out of the dust compartment at the same time, (Fig. 14). Disconnect the lead wires from the on-/off switch by pulling the flag terminals from the switch. 3. Once the motor protector cover is out, the motor protector and protector spring are accessible for parts replacement Installation 1. Reinstall the motor protector and protector spring into the dust compartment. Replace the motor protector cover by applying pressure until both tabs snap into place. 13

14 3.9. Suction Inlet/Hose Removal 1. Remove the dust cover and dust bag. 2. The inside of the suction inlet/hose is snapped over the inside of the dust compartment. There are four (4) retaining tabs on the suction inlet. These four (4) tabs are force fitted into the opening and will have to be broken off using a flat punch and a hammer. Take care to hit only the retaining tabs Installation 1. Snap the new suction inlet/hose in place. 2. Replace all items removed in the reverse order of removal Cord Reel Assembly Removal 1. Lay vacuum with front down. Remove the four (4) screws that secure the cord reel cover Installation 1. To install cord reel assembly, reverse the removal process Power Cord Removal 1. Lay vacuum with front side down. Remove the four (4) screws that secure the cord reel cover and then pull off the cord reel cover. 2. Take the cord guide out of the cord reel bracket and relieve tension on the cord reel spring by holding onto the power cord head while pushing down on the brake lever assembly. Continue the unwind until cord reel stops turning. NOTE: This is done to relieve tension on the cord reel spring and to prevent personal injury. 3. Remove the screw that attaches the cord reel bracket to the rear of the dust container. 4. Remove the screw that attaches the cord reel bracket to the rear of the dust container. 5. Place a flat-head screwdriver between contact disc assembly and tab on the cord reel hub assembly, and gently pry contact disc assembly upward. This will separate contact disc assembly from the cord reel axle. 2. Remove the screw that attaches the cord reel bracket to the back of the dust compartment. 3. Turn unit over, taking care not to let cord reel assembly fall out, and remove the dust cover and motor case. 4. Remove the two (2) wire connectors and disconnect the red and white contact base assembly wires from the two (2) motor wires. Remove the cord reel by lifting the vacuum cleaner up and pulling the red and white wires through the hole in back of the dust compartment. NOTE: If the motor case cover is removed, DO NOT turn vacuum over, as the motor may fall out. 6. Slowly work contact disc assembly through the slot on the cord reel hub until contact disc assembly is separated from the cord reel hub Installation 1. Insert contact disc assembly back into cord reel hub assembly, and place entire assembly on cord reel axle. Push down until it snaps into place. 2. Rewind power cord. 3. Place cord reel assembly onto contact base assembly and reinsert center screw. 4. Replace screw that attaches cord reel bracket to back of dust compartment. 5. Reset the tension on the spring and keeper assembly by pushing down on the brake lever assembly, holding power cord head and turning the cord reel clockwise eight (8) times. This will give the cord reel spring the tension that is required. 6. Replace cord guide. 7. Replace the cord reel cover and insert the four (4) screws that were removed. 14

15 3.12. Motor Replacement Removal 1. Remove the dust cover by grasping the top near the switch cover and pulling sharply out toward you. 2. Remove the five (5) screws from the motor case and then remove the motor case. 3. Disconnect the motor leads and remove the motor. Remove the motor support rubber (rear), noise suppressor, flange and the motor support rubber (front). Place these items on the new motor. See the Exploded View for a view of these Installation 1. Place the new motor into the dust compartment with the tabs on the motor support (rear) aligned parallel to the front edge of the dust compartment. 2. Rewire per the Pictorial Wiring Diagram and Wiring Management Diagram. 3. Replace the motor case and the five (5) screws in order, starting with 1 and ending with 5 as shown in illustration. NOTE: For general servicing, it is necessary to eliminate pinching of any wire during reassembly. After servicing any electrical component or electrical enclosure, the unit should be reassembled and checked for dielectric breakdown or current leakage. 15
