The refrigeration system cools the thermal mass medium to a predetermined lower temperature. Once that temperature is reached, the system goes into standby mode until the temperature rises to another predetermined set point. Only then does the system come out of standby mode and once again cools the thermal mass medium. No energy is wasted when demand on the dryer is low. The RTM dryers are ideally suited when large air volumes need to be dried to a reliable and constant dew point. Compressed air is one of the most important sources of energy that is widely used throughout the industry. As atmospheric air is drawn into a compressor, water vapor, dirt, particles and lubricants are introduced. During compression, air heats up and is able to hold more moisture. Normally, the aftercooler and moisture separator are used to remove liquid water; however, air remains saturated with water vapor and oil. As air travels through the piping, the vapor condenses and creates corrosion inside the piping. This leads to expensive downtime and failure of equipment. A Aircel high capacity air dryer will always pay for itself by reducing air distribution system costs, lengthening tool life, reducing maintenance downtime and system damage. Most manufacturing facilities have widely varying compressed air demands, depending on production schedules, multiple shifts, break times, holidays and weekends. While air compressors are cycled and loaded/unloaded to match compressed air demand, thermal mass cycling refrigerated dryers also can match the compressed air demands, saving energy and maintenance costs. For high-capacity dryers, cycling, loading/unloading is done by using multiple compressors with specific loading/unloading capacities and using a thermal mass medium for storage. This is achieved by using the refrigeration system to cool the thermal mass medium to a predetermined lower temperature. Once the lower temperature is reached, the system cuts off until the temperature rises to a predetermined upper level before starting again. Therefore, the dryer is not wasting energy when the demand is low, compared to a non-cycling dryer which continues to operate even during lowdemand periods. jééíáåö aéã~åçáåö ^ééäáå~íáçåë 1

4 How the RTM Series Works Hot saturated air from the aftercooler enters the air/air heat exchanger, where the air is pre-cooled by the cold dry air leaving the heat exchanger. The pre-cooled air then enters the air/glycol heat exchanger, where is it cooled to its final dew point by chilled water/glycol, flowing in the counter-current through the shell. The chilled air passes through the moisture separator, which has a high efficiency of separation at varying flow rates. Condensate is removed from the system without any loss of air via a zero purge drain valve. Finally the cold, dry air is reheated in the air/air heat exchanger by the incoming hot air for maximum volumetric efficiency before exiting the dryer. The water/glycol is chilled by a cycling refrigeration system, and continuously pumped through the shell side of the air/glycol heat exchanger. The glycol flow rate remains constant, regardless of compressed air load. The refrigeration compressor unloads, and/or cycles OFF, when a pre-set temperature is reached for the water/glycol, thus minimizing electrical power consumption. Separator High efficiency centrifugal separators and integrated stainless steel separators eliminate moisture from the air system. The unique design of the separator removes 99% of the water droplets with no mechanical movement and maintenance. Condensers Aircel s high-capacity dryers are built standard with air-cooled ( scfm) or water-cooled (6000 and up scfm) condenser and automatic water regulating valve (remote air-cooled condenser option). Demand-Activated, Zero-Purge Condensate Drain One of the important components of the dryer is the discharge of the condensate, which has been removed from the compressed air supply. Aircel s zero-purge drain system automatically discharges contaminated condensate from compressed air systems. 7 Capacity Correction Factors RTM The leading manufacturers of compressed air and gas equipment in North America are organized in the Compressed Air & Gas Institute (CAGI). As the premier industry organization, CAGI has developed standards to protect users of this equipment. ADF 100 is the current standard for refrigerated compressed air dryers. ADF 100 specifies the dryers performance to be rated at 100 F inlet temperature, 100 F ambient temperature, and 100 psig system pressure. To adjust the dryer capacity from these CAGI conditions to your specific application, please use the correction factors below for differing ambient air temperatures (C1), inlet air temperatures (C2), system pressures (C3), and varying dew point requirements (C4).
