Electrical safety To avoid the risk of electric shock from the power cable, we strongly advise that the cable be plugged into a socket which has *RCD safety protection. Long power cables will cause a drop in voltage, impairing the performance of the machine. Cables up to 25m long can have 1.5mm2 conductors, while cables longer than 25m must have 2.5mm2 conductors. Ensure that the plug pins on the cable and the machine are not bent, and that the weight of the cable will not pull thesocket apart. Do not separate the plug and socket by pulling on the cables. Check the condition of the power cable regularly for insulation damage, replacing if necessary. * RCD is a Residual Current Device purchased from any hardware outlet. 3

4 Proper Usage Training 1. Read the operating and maintenance sections carefully. Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and the proper use of the equipment. Know how to stop the mower and disengage the controls quickly in an emergency. Preparation 1. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used and remove all stones, sticks, wires, bones and other foreign objects before mowing, they could be thrown by the blade and cause injury or damage. 2. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals. Always wear substantial footwear and long trousers. It is advisable to wear suitable eye protection. 3. Mow only in daylight or good artificial light, and always keep children away from the mowing area. 4. Never operate the equipment in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing; keep a firm hold on the handle and walk; never run. Never walk backwards while cutting grass. Operation 1. Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. 2. Do not mow excessively steep slopes, over 30 degrees. 3. Start the motor carefully with feet well away from the blades. 4. Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Always keep clear of the blade. 5. Stop the mower when crossing gravel drives, walks or other areas where stones may pitch up. 6. Don't mow over heavy or solid objects as striking them with the blade can cause serious damage to the motor and will void your warranty. 7. After striking a foreign object, stop the motor, unplug the mains lead from the power supply and thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage, and repair the damage, or take it to a specialist before restarting and operating the mower. 8. If the mower should start to vibrate abnormally, stop and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally a warning of trouble. 9. Stop the motor whenever you leave the mower, even for a moment, before cleaning the mower's outer housing. 10. When cleaning, repairing or inspecting, make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped and that the motor has had time to cool. Disconnect the electric lead from the mains to prevent accidental starting. 11. Do not run the motor indoors. 12. Shut the motor off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before un-clogging obstructions. 13. Never operate the mower without proper guards, deflectors provided by the manufacturer, or other safety devices in place. 14. Never pick up or carry a mower when it is operating. 15. Never carry the mower by the cord. 16. Never operate the appliance in the rain. The handle can be folded to minimise space requirements. FOLDING THE HANDLE. Unlock the handle clamps in the middle of the handle and fold the top section over the motor. Check that the electrical cables are not being strained while folding and unfolding the handle. Permanent kinks will cause damage to the cables. Before Start-up Check that the machine is completely and correctly assembled. Before using the mower, make sure each time that the power supply cable is not damaged, no tears, cuts, etc. the machine is not damaged. all screws are tight. Mains connection Compare the voltage given on the machine model plate e.g. 230 V with the mains voltage and connect the machine to the relevant and properly earthed plug. 6 Adjusting the handle Warning! Stop the lawnmower and wait until the blade has stopped rotating before adjusting the handle. The handle has been designed to be the correct angle for mowing. Prior to mowing, swing the handle to the rear to the operating position. Handle in the forward position To move the handle to the forward position squeeze both the lower handle legs together. These will then sit on the inside of the mount. Important! Do not use the start/stop lever intermittently. To Stop your Lawnmower 1. To prevent a ring being cut in your lawn and to clear any residual grass in the housing, tilt your lawnmower slightly. 2. Release the pressure on the Start/Stop lever. Using the mower 1. Start mowing the edge of the lawn nearest to the power point so the cable is laid out on the lawn you have already cut, (Figure 8) Handle in the down position Follow procedure described in TO ADJUST THE HANDLE above, and move handle downward until it stops. NOTE: The handle does not rest flat on the ground. Handle in the operating position Adjustment is not required to move the handle to the operating position Simply pull over from the forward position or lift up from the down position until the handle is in the most comfortable operating position. Figure 8 2. Cut your grass more frequently during the fast growth periods. Leave sufficient grass length after the cut for the clippings to fall amongst. Ideally one-third of the grass should be cut leaving two-thirds standing. To Start your Lawnmower Operation 1. Connect female extension cable connector to the three pin plug on the mower. 2. Form a loop in mains cable and push the loop through the slot A as illustrated, (Figure 6A.) To secure, position loop over the hook B as illustrated, (Figure 6B), and pull the cable back through the slot C. 3. Connect plug to mains and switch on. 4. To prevent a ring being cut in your lawn and to clear any residual grass in the housing, tilt your lawnmower slightly 5. The switchbox is provided with a lock-off button, (Figure 7), to prevent accidental starting. Press and hold the lock-off button on the switchbox, then squeeze the Start/ Stop lever towards the left handle. 6. Continue to squeeze the start/stop lever towards the left handle and release the lock/off button. 7. When the lawnmower has reached full speed gently lower it onto the lawn. Figure 6A Figure 6B Lock-Off button A C B Important! Do not Overload Your Mower. Mowing long thick grass may cause the motor speed to drop, you will hear a change in the motor sound. If the motor speed drops you may overload your lawnmower which may cause damage. When mowing in long thick grass a first cut with the cutting height set higher will help reduce the load. See Adjusting the Cutting Height, on the following page. This Hover Mower is designed to cut/trim the grass. If the area that requires mowing has been left uncut for a long period of time, then a more robust mower should be considered prior to normal grass cutting maintenance with this unit. Due to the aerodynamics of cutting grass, the lawn needs to be cut dry. Any dampness will result in the cut grass clogging under the housing, leaving unsightly clumps on your lawn. Figure 7 6

7 Servicing the blade and fan. Removing the Blade and Fan. 1. To remove the blade bolt, hold the fan firmly and with a suitable spanner provided loosen the blade bolt by turning it anticlockwise, (Figure 9.) 2. Remove the blade bolt, blade, spacers and fan. 3. Inspect for damage and clean as necessary. Renew your metal blade after 50 hours mowing or two years whichever is the sooner - regardless of condition. Figure 9 Fitting the Blade and Fan If the blade is cracked or damaged replace it with a new one. Never use a blade bolt if the insulated head is damaged cracked or missing. 1. Ensure the fan is located correctly. 2. Place the spacers onto the fan ensuring the pegs have located into the holes. 3. Place the blade onto the spacers ensuring the pegs have located into the holes on the blade and ensuring the blade is positioned correctly, see Adjusting the Cutting Height, in the following section. 4. Place the blade bolt through the centre hole of the blade. 5. Tighten down clockwise by hand. 6. Hold the fan firmly and tighten the blade bolt. Once the cut height is selected, re-assemble the blade, ensuring the cutter blade is assembled with the cutting tips downwards as shown in (Figure 9) above, and ensure the plastic washer is fitted under the blade nut. With the plastic washer under the blade nut tighten the assembly. Important! Your mower is supplied with the blade height in position B, (Figure 10). Always re-fit all the spacers and never fit more or less, or your mower will become unsafe. Service recommendations Your product is uniquely identified by a red and white product rating label. We strongly recommend that your product is serviced at least every twelve months. Care and maintenance Cleaning (Use gloves) It is very important that you keep your lawnmower clean. Grass clippings left in any of the air intakes or under the hood could become a potential fire hazard. Adjusting the cutting height Your mower employs a manual method of height of cut adjustment. The method involves changing the arrangement of the spacers fitted between the fan and the blade. A B Ensure your mower is disconnected from the mains supply. Fold the handle assembly by loosening the two handle knobs. Turn your mower over onto its side so that the underside of the mower housing is exposed. Using a cloth placed over the blades or heavy duty Plastic Washer gloves to protect your hands, grip the blade and, using the spanner provided, Nut A loosen and remove the nut from the motor spindle by Blade turning the nut in an anticlockwise direction. Motor Remove the blade nut, plastic washer, spacers and Spacers B blade and re-assemble to give the cut height required. A. For close cut grass place both spacers between the blade and the motor. C B. For a medium cut place a spacers either side of the blade. C. For longer grass place Figure 10 both spacers between the nut and the blade. C Figure 11 D 1. Remove grass from under the hood with a piece of wood or similar, (Figure 11A). 2. Using a soft brush - remove grass clippings from all air intakes, (Figure 11B). 3. Remove the blade, see relevant section in left column, to gain access to the fan and clean with a soft brush, Figure 11C. 4. Wipe over the surface of your lawnmower with a dry cloth, (Figure 11D). Important! Never use water for cleaning your lawnmower. Do not clean with chemicals, including petrol, or solvents some can destroy critical plastic parts. When you finish mowing 1. Replace blade, bolts, nuts or screws, if necessary. 2. Clean your lawnmower thoroughly. 3. Ask your local Service Centre to clean the air filter thoroughly and carry out any service or repairs required. 4. Make sure that the electric cable extension is coiled properly. 7
