This wall mount bracket features a cross bar that is attached to a wall and two L-shaped brackets that are hooked and bolted into place on the cross bar. 22 GROWER TIPS How Important Is The Growing Climate? Maintaining as close to an optimum growing climate is essential to growing success! Trying to duplicate what happens outdoors, indoors, is the goal and temperature plays an important role in giving plants what they need to thrive. Keeping daytime temperatures around degrees F in the flowering stage is best (unless you re using CO2 which does best at around degrees F). However, even if you re using CO2, most growers recommend you back off the higher temperatures and bring it down to degrees F for the last two weeks before harvest. Night temperatures should be kept around degrees F for most plants. Temps lower than 65 degrees increase the chances of rot which thrives in the 60 degree F range. Will I Need An Air Conditioner? With today s powerful grow lights that heat spaces quickly, there is no doubt you ll need air conditioning to control temperature. Depending on where you re located, your grow room can reach temperatures that can easily damage your plants. Maintaining the perfect growing climate is one of many things you ll need to protect your valuable plants. How Do I Know What Size A/C To Buy? Use the Ideal-Air BTU calculator to determine what size A/C is right for you. If you re in between sizes ALWAYS move up to the next size A/C because size does matter. For redundancy, in-case your A/C goes down, also consider two smaller units to equal your cooling need. Whatever style of A/C you choose will work better and last longer if it s properly matched to your room size and temperatures. Does Humidity Matter? Humidity stumps a lot of new growers and causes several unexpected problems. Producing higher humidity during the vegetative stage will reduce salt levels within the plant while encouraging healthy and lush growth. During the vegetative stage, if humidity drops below 40%, especially anywhere below 25%, it can cause serious problems that look like nutrient deficiencies or light/heat stress. Many new growers are eager to spend money on CO2 or bigger lights, when controlling the humidity would make a much bigger difference in their final product. It s all important, but again, you re trying to duplicate what happens outdoors and creating a perfect balance. Including ideal humidity is vitally important to plant health and growth. Will I Need To Consider A Dehumidifier? In almost all cases a dehumidifier is a necessity to grow indoors. Plants will exhale 90% of the water that goes into them, so consider that when you re growing indoors there will more humidity than is required for healthy plants. Too much humidity, especially if it s allowed to persist, can lead to a rash of serious, plant debilitating problems, not the least of which is powdery mildew. Not good. In addition to a dehumidifier, adding some air movement with the addition of an oscillating fan is highly beneficial as well. A fan not only helps in managing humidity but also helps to strengthen the stalks of your plants so you have healthier, more robust plant growth. How Do I Choose A Dehumidifier? You ll need to know how much water is going into the space. You can multiply the amount of water by.9 to tell you how much water will be in the air. Humidifiers are rated in pints of water removed and at a specific temperature (AHAM rating). Also important is the temperature of your room. Many new growers forget the temperature will drop when your lights go off. When the temperature drops dehumidifiers do not remove as much water as they do when it s warmer in the room. Make sure your growing space has strong, consistent air flow and ventilation. This is another factor that relates to air quality. Experienced growers know that air quality is essential to growing great plants. You can maintain proper air flow and ventilation using fans, air filtration systems, air conditioning, humidifiers and dehumidifiers in concert to create the ideal growing environment. Finding that optimum balance is an ever-changing, ongoing process that s affected by ambient temperature, season, lighting, your grow space and the amount of plants you re growing. 23 GLOSSARY OF TERMS A/C Air conditioning also referred to as A/C. A system or device for reducing the temperature, and humidity, in a space. AHAM Acronym for Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. AHAM produces the official rating for dehumidifiers. BTU British Thermal Unit. A single BTU is the amount of energy required to cool or heat a pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. Condenser The unit used to condense a substance from a gaseous state to liquid by cooling it. Condensers are generally recognized as heat exchangers. In the case of air conditioners they extract the inside heat from the interior of the air conditioner to the outside air. Often referred to as the outdoor unit. Dehumidifier Also called dehums. Dehumidifiers remove humidity and are used to keep a rooms humidity levels in check. Maintaining correct humidity will ensure a healthy crop. Too much humidity will cause molds, rot and devastate your crop. Digital Inverter Compressor A digitally controlled compressor that converts AC voltage to DC voltage to control compressor speed. The inverter allows precise throttle control of the conditioning unit based on the load or need. Inverter units are quieter, more efficient and last longer. Ductless Mini-Split An air conditioner or heat pump that requires no duct work to function. The unit hangs on the wall or ceiling and cools or heats the surrounding area. Evaporator The indoor portion of the heat pump or air conditioner. In a minisplit system this hangs on the wall or ceiling and provides the heating or cooling of the space. H/P Heat Pump. A unit that can operate as both an air conditioner or a heater. When it s cold outside a heat pump extracts the outside heat and transfers it inside. When it s warm outside, it reverses directions and acts like an air conditioner, removing heat. A heat pump moves heat instead of generating it, giving you more energy efficiency. HSPF Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. The greater the number/rating the more efficient the heating. A 10 HSPF, for example is a very good rating. Humidifier Humidifiers use water to put humidity in the growing space. Many plants we grow indoors are accustomed to growing outdoors in tropical areas where humidity is high. Also certain parts of the country are dryer than others so you will need to add humidity. Line Set Insulated copper tubing used to connect the evaporator and condenser. The refrigerant travels back and forth through the line set between the evaporator and condenser to create either cooling or heating. RH Relative humidity. This is the amount of water vapor present in air expressed as a percentage of the amount needed for saturation at the same temperature. R-410 A type of refrigerant. Unlike alkyl halide refrigerants, R-410A (which contains only fluorine) does not contribute to ozone depletion. Because of that attribute it s preferred and used more broadly instead of R-22 which are phased out. R-410 refrigerants allow for higher SEER ratings therein reducing power consumption and improving unit efficiency. SEER Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The greater the SEER rating, the more efficient the cooling system. The minimum SEER rating allowed by the Federal Government is 14. Ton The size of air conditioning unit (heating or cooling) is common referred to in tons. A one ton unit, for example, is 12,000 BTU s. A two ton, 24,000 BTU s, etc. This was arrived at using a standard of how long it would take to melt ice. A one ton unit takes 12,000 BTU s of heat one hour to melt a ton of ice. VFD Variable Frequency Drive. The VFD is a an electrical device that s used to control the speed and torque of an air conditioning motor, like those used in an inverter compressor. NOTES
