But beyond their primary purpose, keeping things cool, refrigerants and refrigeration systems are also subject to close environmental regulation. And those regulations change constantly. The challenge for shipowners and operators is to make sure their systems keep running smoothly, and that they remain fully compliant with all current regulations. Driven by international agreements intended to reduce global warming and limit ozone depletion, harmful refrigerant types are being phased out in favour of more environmentally acceptable solutions. R22 is already being removed from service and it s likely that R404A will follow. At WSS, we re at the forefront of these changes, testing new, environmentally friendly alternatives and helping customers adapt to the next generation of refrigerants, efficiently and cost-effectively. Keeping ahead of environmental regulation isn t just about using environmentally friendly refrigerants. Crucially, it s also about main taining the integrity of the refrigeration system. The most serious environmental impact from a refrigeration system over its lifetime is caused by increased energy consumption. Put simply, a leaking system is less efficient - a 10% loss in refrigerant increases energy consumption by up to 20%. While the costs caused by a leaking system increase steadily over time if the leak is not attended to, the actual cost of repairing the leak remains nearly constant. 5 R-22 Replacements R-22 being the most frequently used refrigerant over the past 3 decades, is being phased out due to its ozone depleting potential. But numerous ships using R-22 still have many years left in service, so a non-ozone depleting alternative to R-22 is required. There are between 25 and 30 different R-22 replacements to choose from, with different success factors, prices and availability. At WSS we recommend Unicool R-417A as the R-22 replacement in existing systems, after extensive testing of the available options. This is the fastest and cheapest way to replace R-22 in existing systems and maintain acceptable performance/capacity. So far more than 2,700 ships have been retrofitted from R-22 to Unicool R-417A. WSS has Unicool R-417A available globally in both large and small cylinders. Other non-ozone depleting R-22 replacements are offered out of selected ports and in large cylinders only; these refrigerants are Unicool R-427A and Unicool R-422D.

Quality guaranteed While cheaper refrigerants might seem like a cost-saving option, in most cases you re charging the system with problems. Refrigerants contaminated with moisture cause corrosion in compressors, leading to a loss of operating efficiency and costly mechanical breakdown. It s better to be sure. With Unicool refrigerants, the quality and minimum moisture content of the gases is guaranteed, so removing the risk of damage to equipment or harm to crew caused by poor quality refrigerants. What s more, Unicool cylinders are filled and sealed only by approved suppliers. Good to know. Cylinder safety and maintenance Before filling, every cylinder is inspected according to strict rules by trained technicians and where necessary refurbished and re-qualified. Those that fail to meet our standards are scrapped, so there s no doubt about the integrity of cylinders or concern about the consequences of failure. We go further. Every Unicool cylinder is covered by insurance to direct damage due to cylinder failure while on board.
