1 UK arotherm Schematics and installation guide Air to Water Heat Pumps (AWHP) Controls: VRC 700, VR 70, VR 91 The Vaillant heat pump booklet contains documentation to assist in the design, installation and commissioning of your heat pump system. These documents should be used alongside the relevant manuals for the equipment supplied. Please read the contents very carefully for a successful installation. Table of contents 1. 3 Heat pump Pre-install Checklist Have you got the following? Correctly sized heat pump? (Designed using a full heat loss calculation to BS 12831) Vaillant flexi hoses Vaillant flexi hoses are 1 ¼ 28mm after the flexi hose 35mm pipe work may be required for arotherm 15kW systems. The reason for this is because heat pump systems use a lower temperature heat so the pipe work must be bigger to ensure the heat is transferred to the heating system. Vaillant article number Anti-vibration feet The arotherm heat pump is supplied with small anti-vibration pads (see picture) which are suitable when the heat pump is installed on a concrete plinth. If you do not want to install a concrete plinth then you can use our larger Anti-Vibration feet which take the place of the concrete plinth. The heat pump must still be installed on a suitable and level surface. Vaillant article number Or suitable wall mounted bracket (see 3rd party Components Document) We do not recommend installing the arotherm 15kW on a wall mounted bracket, but if required, a structural engineer should be consulted and appropriate brackets utilised. **Please note the heat pump should be accessible so a yearly service can be carried out should a fault occur the home owner will need to make suitable and safe access arrangements at their own cost. 3-way Honeywell 4044C or equivalent (28mm) This valve is required to switch between heating and domestic hot water circuits. To comply with G3 regulations the valve MUST be fitted with the Honeywell 4044C B pointing to the heating circuit. When no power is going to the valve the heat pump will default to heating and therefore meet G3 requirements. Anti-Freeze protection glycol As the heat pump is installed outside the property, it must be protected from power supply failure or when in standby mode. We recommend Fernox HP5c or Sentinel R700 precommissioning fluid and R600 protected down to -15 C. All glycol should be suita bly premixed in an appropriate container as per instructions from the glycol manufacture and pumped into the system. A hand pump is not suitable! **Please note if the system is not protected, this will invalidate the guarantee of the heat pump.

4 Glycol discharge vessel As a heat pump primary system will have glycol in the circuits, a collection vessel will be required when a PRV is fitted to collect the fluid and stop it from entering the water system. Vaillant article number Dirt filter/separator All heat pump heating systems should have an easily isolated dirt filter/ separator fitted as standard on the return to the heat pump. We also strongly recommend the use of a magnetic filter on the heating circuit and an additional dirt filter/separator on the return to the heat exchanger module (if using) to protect the plate to plate. Correctly sized primary pipe work running to and from the Heat pump The size of the pipe work depends on volume flow and the pressure loss and it has to be determined by suitable calculations. As a guide, 28mm should be used for 5, 8 and 11kw heat pumps but upgraded to 35mm for the 15kW. Correct Heat pump DHW cylinder with adequate coil rating When using a non Vaillant Heat Pump Cylinder as a guide, Vaillant recommend using 4kw per 1m² of heat exchanger area. Correctly sized heat emitters to achieve the desired star rating within MCS Radiators will need over sizing dependant on the flow temperature from the heat pump and underfloor heating will need designing with the pipe centres correlating to the flow temperature. Correct controls chosen for the operation of heating zones and hot water provision Refer to the schematic for assistance. Correct valves, expansion vessels and sundries to adhere installation to the relevant schematic. Make sure you have both fill and isolation points for all hydraulic circuits. Do you have relevant heat and electrical meters (if you have a Hybrid & you are claiming RHI)? 3 rd party components All systems require the utilisation of 3 rd party components to ensure proper functionality. Although these components are out of the scope of Vaillant Group UK Ltd, we do recommend specific parts as they technically fit and have been proven to work without causing any issue. However, we make clear that the acquisition, reliability and technical support of those parts is not our responsibility. Below is a list of the components that we recommend: 3way valve: When a 3port valve is shown on our schematics, we recommend the Honeywell 4044c (28mm) sized according to the pipe work. 5 Relays: The relay required to allow input from 3rd party controls must be a 230V double pole double throw relay (DPDT). These relays are available from most electrical merchants. But due to the vast choice of relays and descriptions on the market, the DPDT may not be recognised by the merchant. For clarity, a 8 pin 230V relay and a relay base is the best description to use when ordering such items. Wall mounted brackets: Please see link below: Design and planning notes: 1. When a post-buffer pump is fitted, it can be on either the flow or the return dependant on the particular system hydraulics. Consideration should be given to the fact that the buffer is a hydraulic nil point. 2. Please ensure that the minimum open heating system volumes are met for each size of heat pump: 5kW - 17ltrs, 8kW - 21ltrs, 11kW - 35ltrs and 15kW - 60ltrs. This open volume is needed to ensure an effective defrost cycle. Failure to adhere to the minimum volumes may result in inadequate heat pump operation. If the minimum volume cannot be met please use the Vaillant de-coupler tank Please note that a Vaillant heat pump system can support up to 3 Vaillant heating zones plus OEM. To control one heating zone you need the VRC700 (comes with the heat pump). For DHW and multiple heating zones you need also a VR70 as well as a VR91 for each additional heating zone. Vaillant article number VR70: , VR91: When heat pump is being used to heat the DHW, the size of the coil in the DHW cylinder must be calculated for use with a heat pump (approximately 4kW per m 2 of heat exchanger area). 5. Please ensure that power to the outdoor unit is switched on a minimum of 2 hours before compressor start up (i.e. before any demand is placed for heat), especially in cold weather conditions. 6. When using TRV s on oversized radiators, large bore TRV s should be utilised wherever possible for effective heat transfer. Consideration should be given to leaving a radiator circuit open to comply with minimum system volumes. Please note when using TRV s the open volume is still required. 7. When utilising an existing boiler within a new heat pump system, please be aware of kw energy being delivered to the system from the boiler. If possible, range rate the boiler down to an acceptable level; alternatively fit a larger buffer to accommodate the higher kw being delivered when the boiler is required. 8. In a hybrid system where the DHW is being supplied by boiler please ensure you are using either a VR40 or a VR70 wiring centre. This will allow control from the DHW 3 port valve. 6 Pre-commissioning Checklist 1. Has the complete system been purged of air? 2. Is the glycol circuit pressurized to bar? 3. Is there an expansion relief valve, expansion vessel and pressure gauge installed on the glycol circuit? 4. Is there a 2 nd expansion relief valve, expansion vessel and pressure gauge installed when utilising a heat exchanger module? 5. Has the glycol circuit been filled with a Vaillant approved glycol/water solution protected down to -15 C? 6. Has the Glycol been pre-mixed in a suitable container before filling the system (i.e Glycol pump station)? 7. Have shut off valves been provided for filling and isolation? 8. Have anti-vibration feet and flexible hoses been installed? 9. Is there a fully isolatable inline strainer installed in the glycol circuit, positioned on the primary return pipe work back to the heat pump? 10. Is the condensate pipe work connected and discharged according to manufacturer s instructions? 11. Is the heat pump installed at height and if so, with appropriate brackets? 12. Is the heating system design and heat loss calculation paper work available on site? Wiring: 1. Do you have the correct size and type of fuse for installation? 2. Does the wiring adhere to the relevant Vaillant schematic/wiring diagram? 3. Have all ebus connections been checked for polarity? 4. Have the relevant electrical points been isolated?

7 VRC 700 Commissioning Instructions Use the selection buttons (found just below the monitor) to go backward and forward and as well as to select settings and knob to change your selection and to scroll up and down. Select Menu and then follow the pictures below Using the dial, scroll down to the Installer level The code is 000

8 Then, adjust the following settings accordingly: Adaptive heat. Curve: Yes Select System configuration Scheme diagram: see specific drawing settings document Config.: VR70 addr. 1: see specific drawing settings document Max limit outs temp. (adjust on HEATING2 also if applicable): this is the outdoors temperature at which heating switches off. It has to be determined by the installer in agreement with the end-user. Maximum temperature (adjust on HEATING2 also if applicable): should be set to maximum desired flow temperature +5 C. Example: if maximum desired flow temperature is 45 C, then set to 50 C. Room temp. mod. (adjust on HEATING2 also if applicable): see specific drawing settings document Zone activated (adjust on ZONE2 also if applicable): see specific drawing settings document Zone assignment (adjust on ZONE2 also if applicable): see specific drawing settings document Hot water (if utilised): C Anti-legionella day (if a hot water cylinder is utilised): should be performed at least on a weekly basis (random day) but a daily basis is also recommended in some cases.
