9 PART 4 - NEWSPAPER ARTICLE Read the following article and then answer the questions. SAVING ENERGY The impact of energy use on the world's climate and our cost of living means that discovering how to save energy is important to everyone. You might think you can't do much to make a difference but you can if you just know how. Look at the big energy eaters in the kitchen: basic kitchen appliances like the oven, the fridge and the washer and the luxury additions like the dishwasher, microwave and the juicer. Then take some simple steps immediately: only boil as much water as you need in the kettle; keep the freezer full as half-empty freezers cost more to run than full ones; use the right sized pan on the hob and use a lid to retain heat. Try to remember that a 30 degree wash-load uses less energy than one done at a higher temperature; microwaves are more energy efficient than ovens and the most energy efficient way to dry clothes is to hang them outside on a washing line - free energy with no emissions. If your family needs to replace a worn-out kitchen appliance go for an energy efficient model. Look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo, which guarantees that the product is the most efficient in its category, will cost less to run and help lower the CO2 emissions from your house. Replacing an old fridge freezer with a new ESR model will save around a year and 140kg of CO2. Recommended fridge freezers can be bought for around so energy efficiency can be achieved quite cheaply. Adapted from The Great Green Giveaway (Money Guardian ) Now answer the questions on the next page by putting a tick ( ) in the correct box. The first one has been done for you. What is the most probable source of this text? A. A novel B. A newspaper article C. A text book E3 Reading Revised 2009/2010 Practice Set 1 7

10 PART 4 - NEWSPAPER ARTICLE CONTINUED 19. A suitable word to replace the word 'eaters' in the second paragraph would be A. users B. diners C. tasters 20. According to the article, you can save around 39 a year by: A. keeping the freezer full B. buying an energy efficient fridge freezer C. lowering CO2 emissions in your home 21. The article says that: A. ovens are expensive to use B. ovens use more energy than microwaves C. ovens should be turned down by 30 degrees 22. An alternative title for this article could be: A. Global Warming B. Cutting Costs, Lowering Emissions C. A Guide To Buying A New Kitchen 23. According to the article, which of these statements is true? A. Half-empty freezers are cheap to run B. Always boil as much water as you can C. It costs nothing to dry clothes outside 24. In this article, the word 'efficient' means: A. Functioning with the least waste B. Able to do the job C. Short of ability E3 Reading Revised 2009/2010 Practice Set 1 8
