2 102 Applicability Building: The following buildings, structures and facilities are exempt from the Florida Building Code as provided by law, and further exemptions shall be as determined by the legislature and provided by law: 105 Permits (c) Nonresidential farm buildings (d) Temporary buildings or sheds used exclusively for construction purposes. (f ) Those structures or facilities of electric utilities, as defined in section , Florida Statutes, which are directly involved in the generation, transmission, or distribution, of electricity. (j) Temporary housing provided by the Department of Corrections to any prisoner in the state correctional system Required: Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building shall first make an application to the building official and obtain the required permit Time limitation of application: An application for a permit for any proposed work shall be deemed to have been abandoned 180 days after the date of filing, unless such application has been pursued in good faith or a permit has been issued Conditions of the permit Permit Intent. Every permit issued shall become invalid unless the work authorized by such permit is commenced within six months after its issuance months after the time the work is commenced Notice of termite protection: A permanent sign which identifies the termite treatment provider The sign shall be posted near the water heater or electric panel. 107 Submittal Documents Information on construction documents: Construction documents shall be of sufficient clarity to indicate the location, nature and extent regulations, as determined by the building official. 110 Inspections General: Construction or work for which a permit is required shall be subject to inspection by the building official. 1 Exam Prep Florida Building Code Mechanical,

To be made after the roof, all framing, fireblocking and bracing is in place, all concealing wiring, all pipes, chimneys, ducts and vents are complete and shall, at a minimum, include the following building components: Electrical 1. In exterior walls and bearing partitions, any wood stud is permitted to be cut or notched not to exceed 25 percent of its depth Bored holes: In no case shall the edge of the bored hole be nearer than inch to the edge of the stud. 303 Equipment and Appliance Location Prohibited Locations: Fuel-fired appliances shall not be located in, or obtain combustion air from, any of the following rooms or spaces: Installation Two openings: Two permanent openings shall be provided within the garage. The upper opening shall be located entirely within 12 inches of the ceiling of the garage Public garages: Appliances located in public garages, motor fueling-dispensing facilities, repair garages shall be installed a minimum of 8 feet Clearances from grade: Equipment and appliances installed at grade level shall be supported on a level concrete not less than 6 inches above adjoining grade Guards: Guards shall be provided where appliances, equipment, fans or other components that require such edge or open side is located more than 30 inches above the floor, roof or grade below. 305 Piping Support Interval of support. Piping shall be supported at distances not exceeding the spacing specified in Table or in accordance with MSS SP Access and Service Space Access for maintenance and replacement: A level working space at least 30 inches deep and 30 inches wide shall be provided in front of the control side to service an appliance. Table Piping Support Bracing Appliances in rooms: Rooms containing appliances shall be provided with a door and an unobstructed passageway not less than 36 inches wide and 80 inches high. Exception: Within a dwelling unit, appliances installed in a compartment, alcove, basement, or similar space sageway measuring not less than 24 inches wide Appliances in attics: Attics containing appliances shall be provided with an opening and unobstructed passageway large enough to allow removal of the largest appliance and large enough to allow removal of the largest appliance Equipment and appliances on roofs or elevated structures: Where equipment requiring access or appliances are located on an elevated structure or the roof of a building an interior or exterior means of access shall be provided. 1 Exam Prep Florida Building Code Mechanical,

5 Sloped roofs: Where appliances, equipment, fans, or other components that require service are installed on a roof having a slope of three units vertical in 12 units horizontal or greater. 307 Condensate Disposal Fuel-burning appliances: Such piping hall maintain a minimum horizontal slope in the direction of discharge of not less than one-eighth unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (1- percent slope) Condensate disposal: Condensate from all cooling coils and evaporators shall be conveyed from the drain pan outlet to an approved place of disposal. Such piping shall maintain vertical in 12-units horizontal Drain pipe materials and sizes: Condensate waste and drain line size shall not be less than ¾-inch internal diameter and shall not decrease in size from the drain pan connection to the place of condensate disposal. Table Condensate Drain Sizing Auxiliary and secondary drain systems: 1. The auxiliary pan drain shall discharge to a conspicuous point of disposal to alert occupants Nonmetallic pans shall have a minimum thickness of not less than inch. 308 Clearance Reduction Protective assembly construction and installation: Protective assemblies shall not be placed less than 1 inch from mechanical appliances, devices or equipment, regardless of the allowable reduced clearance. Table Clearances Reduction Methods 400 Ventilation Intake opening location: Air intake openings shall comply with all of the following: 1. Intake openings shall be located a minimum of 10 feet from lot lines or buildings on the same lot. 2. Mechanical and gravity outdoor air intake openings shall be located not less than 10 feet such as vents, streets, alleys, parking lots and loading docks Intake opening protection: Air intake openings that terminate outdoors shall be protected with corrosion-resistant shall be protected against local weather conditions. 6 Table Minimum Ventilation Rates e. rates are per water closet or urinal The lower rate shall be permitted only where exhaust system is designed to operate continuously while occupied. 404 Enclosed Parking Spaces Minimum ventilation: Automatic operation of the system shall not reduce the ventilation airflow rate below 0.05 rate of 0.75 cfm per square foot of floor area. 500 Exhaust Systems Exhaust discharge: The air removed by every mechanical exhaust system shall be discharged outdoors air shall not be exhausted into attic or crawl space. 502 Required Systems Stationary storage battery systems: Stationary storage battery systems, as regulated by the Florida Fire Prevention Code, shall be provided with ventilation in accordance with this chapter and Section or Ventilation rate in rooms: Continuous ventilation shall be provided at a rate of not less than 1 cubic foot per minute per square foot of floor area of the room Hazardous materials general requirements: 2. Mechanical ventilation shall be provided at a rate of not less than cfm per square foot Motion picture projectors Projectors without exhaust connections: The exhaust rate for xenon projectors shall be a minimum of 300 cfm lamp housing does not exceed 130 F. 504 Clothes Dryer Exhaust Domestic clothes dryer ducts: Exhaust ducts for domestic clothes dryers shall conform to the requirements of the Sections through Material and Size: Exhaust ducts shall have a smooth interior finish 4 inches nominal in diameter Specified length: The maximum length of the exhaust duct shall be 35 feet from the dryer outlet terminal. 505 Domestic Kitchen Exhaust: Such ducts shall have smooth inner walls, shall be air tight, shall be equipped with a backdraft damper, and shall be independent of all other exhaust systems. 506 Commercial Kitchen Hood Ventilation System Ducts Grease duct materials: Grease ducts serving Type I hoods shall be constructed of steel having (no. 18 gage) in thickness. 1 Exam Prep Florida Building Code Mechanical,

7 Makeup air ducts. Makeup air ducts connecting to or within 18 inches of a Type I shall be noncombustible or shall be listed for application Joints, seams and penetrations of grease ducts: Joints, seams and penetrations of grease ducts shall be made with a continuous liquid-tight weld or braze made on the external surface of the duct system Air velocity: Grease duct systems serving a Type I hood shall be designed and installed to provide an air velocity within the duct system of not less than 500 feet per minute Prevention of grease accumulation in grease ducts Where horizontal ducts exceed 75 feet in length, the slope shall be not less than one unit vertical in 12 units horizontal Personnel entry: Where ductwork is large enough to allow entry of personnel, not less than one be provided in the horizontal sections, and in the top of vertical risers Underground grease duct installation: Underground grease duct installations shall comply with all of the following: 3. The underground duct system shall be completely encased in concrete with a minimum thickness of 4 inches Termination above the roof Termination location Clearances: Exhaust equipment serving a Type I hood shall have a clearance to combustible construction of not less than 18 inches Grease duct enclosures: Duct enclosures shall have a fire-resistance rating of not less than that of assembly penetrated and not less than 1 hour Shaft enclosures: Such grease duct systems and exhaust equipment shall have a clearance to combustible construction structures not less than 6 inches. 507 Commercial Kitchen Hoods Type I hoods: Type I hoods shall be installed where cooking appliances produce grease or smoke of the cooking process Type II hoods: Type II hoods shall be installed above dishwashers and appliances that produce heat or moisture and do not produce grease or smoke as a result of the cooking process Type I materials: Type I hoods shall be constructed of steel having a minimum thickness of inch (No.18 gage) or stainless steel not less than inch in thickness Type I hoods Type II hoods 1 Exam Prep Florida Building Code Mechanical,

8 507.9 Clearances for Type I hood: A type I hood shall be installed with a clearance to combustibles of not less than 18 inches Grease filters Mounting position: Filters shall be installed at an angle of not less than 45 degrees from the horizontal and shall be equipped with a drip tray beneath the lower edge of the filters Canopy size and location: The inside lower edge of the canopy-type Type I and II commercial hoods shall not exceed 4 feet Capacity of hoods: Commercial food service hoods shall exhaust a minimum net quantity of air determined in accordance with this section and Sections through Extra-heavy-duty cooking appliances Heavy-duty cooking appliances Medium-duty cooking appliances Light-duty cooking appliances Noncanopy size and location: Noncanopy-type hoods shall be located a maximum of 3 feet above the cooking surface. The edge of the hood shall be set back a maximum of 1 foot from the edge of the cooking surface. 508 Commercial Kitchen Make-up Air Make up air: The amount of makeup air supplied to the building from all sources shall be approximately equal to the amount of exhaust air for all exhaust systems for the building. 510 Hazardous Exhaust Systems Table Minimum Duct Thickness Clearance for combustibles: Ducts shall have a clearance to combustibles in accordance with Table accordance with Section Table Clearance for combustibles 511 Dust, Stock, and Refuse Conveying Systems Collectors and separators: A collector and separator shall be located nearer than 10 feet to combustible construction or to an unprotected wall or floor opening highest part of any roof with a distance of 30 feet. 9 512 Subslab Soil Exhaust Systems Termination: Subslab soil exhaust system ducts shall extend through roof and terminate at least 6 inches above the roof and at least 10 feet from any operable openings or air intake. 600 Duct Systems 602 Plenums Construction: The use of gypsum boards to form plenums shall be limited to systems where the air temperatures do not exceed 125 F will be maintained above the airstream dew-point temperature. 603 Duct Construction and Installation Metallic ducts: All metallic ducts shall be constructed as specified in the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards-Metal and Flexible. Table Duct Construction Minimum Sheet Metal Thicknesses for Single Dwelling Units Nonmetallic ducts: Nonmetallic ducts shall be constructed with Class O or Class 1 duct material and shall comply with UL Gypsum ducts: The use of gypsum boards to form air shafts (ducts) do not exceed 125 F and the gypsum board surface temperature is maintained above the airstream dewpoint temperature Connector length: Flexible air connectors shall be limited in length to 14 feet Air temperature: The design temperature of air to be conveyed in flexible air ducts and flexible air connectors Underground ducts: Ducts shall be approved for underground installation. Metallic ducts not having approved protective coating shall be completely encased in a minimum of 2 inches on concrete Slope. Ducts shall have a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot to allow drainage to a point provided with access Sealing: Ducts shall be sealed and secured prior to pouring concrete Joints, seams, and connections: Closure systems used to seal ductwork listed and labeled in accordance with UL 181A shall be marked 181A-p: for pressure-sensitive tape Supports: Ducts shall be supported at intervals not to exceed 12 feet in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions Condensation: Provisions shall be made to prevent the formation of condensation on the exterior of any duct. 1 Exam Prep Florida Building Code Mechanical,

10 Location: Ducts shall not be installed in or within 4 inches of the earth, except where such ducts comply with Section Insulation Surface temperature: Ducts that operate at temperatures exceeding 120F shall have sufficient thermal insulation to limit the exposed surface temperature to 120F Identification: The installed thickness of duct insulation used to determine its R-value shall be determined as follows: 2. For duct wrap, the installed thickness shall be assumed to be 75 percent of nominal thickness Lining installation: Linings shall be interrupted at the area of operation of fire damper and at a minimum of 6 inches and fuel-burning heaters in a duct system. 605 Air Filters General: Liquid adhesive coating used on filters should have a flash point not lower than 325 F. 606 Smoke Detection Systems Control Return air systems: Smoke detectors shall be installed in supply air systems with a design capacity greater than 2,000 cfm in the supply duct. Exception: Smoke detectors are not required in the return air system where all portions of the building served in accordance with the Florida Fire Prevention Code. 607 Duct and Transfer Openings Fire damper ratings: Fire dampers shall have the minimum fire protection rating specified in Table for the type of penetration. Table Fire damper ratings Fire damper actuation device: The damper actuation device shall meet one of the following requirements: 1. The operating temperature shall be approximately 50 F above the normal temperature within the duct system, but not less than 160 F Smoke damper actuation: 1. Where a smoke damper is installed within a duct air outlets or inlets between the detector and the damper Smoke damper: The smoke damper shall close upon actuation of a listed smoke detector one of the following as applicable: Shaft enclosures 1. Where a damper is installed within a duct, a smoke detector shall be installed in the duct within 5 feet of the damper. 11 700 Combustion Air 800 Chimneys and Vents Chimney entrance: Connectors shall connect to a chimney flue at a point not less than 12 inches above the lowest portion of the interior of the chimney flue. 802 Vents Table Vent Application Type L vent terminations: Type L vents shall terminate not less than 2 feet above the highest point of the roof penetration and not less than 2 feet higher than any portion of a building within 10 ft Minimum vent heights: Vents shall terminate not less than 5 feet in vertical height above the highest connected appliance flue collar. 803 Connectors Manual dampers shall not be installed in connectors except in chimney connectors serving solid fuel-burning appliances Chimney connector construction: Table 803.9(1) Table 803.9(2) Minimum chimney Connector Thickness for Low-Heat Appliances Minimum Chimney Connector Thickness for Medium-and High-Heat Appliances Clearances Pitch. Connectors shall rise to the chimney or vent with a minimum pitch equal to ¼ unit vertical in 12 units horizontal. Table Connector Clearances to Combustibles 804 Direct-Vent, Integral vent and Mechanical Draft Systems Vertical terminations Vertical terminations shall comply with the following requirements: Factory-Built Chimneys Medium-heat appliances. 12 1000 Boilers, Water Heaters and Pressure Vessels 1002 Water Heaters Temperature limitation: Where a combination potable water to the potable hot water distribution system to a temperature of 140 F Boilers Working clearance: Clearances shall be maintained around boilers, generators, heaters, tanks and related replacement and visibility of all gauges Top clearance: Clearances from the tops of boilers to the ceiling or other overhead obstruction shall be in accordance with Table Table Boiler Top Clearance 1005 Boiler connections Valves: Every boiler or modular boiler shall have a shutoff valve in the supply and return piping. For multiple boiler or multiple modular boiler installations in the supply and return piping Safety and Pressure Relief Valves and Controls Installation: Safety or relief valves shall be installed The relief valve shall discharge by gravity Boiler Low-Water Cutoff General: All steam and hot water boilers shall be protected with a low-water cutoff control Steam Blowoff Valve General: Every steam boiler shall be equipped with a quick-opening blowoff valve The minimum size of the valve shall be the size specified by the boiler manufacturer or the size of the boiler blow-off valve opening Gauges Water-gauge glass: The gauge glass shall be installed so that the midpoint is the normal boiler water level Refrigeration Change in refrigerant type: The type of refrigerant in refrigeration systems having a refrigerant compliance with the applicable code provisions for new refrigerant type System Requirements Recovered refrigerants: Refrigerants that are recovered from refrigeration and airconditioning Recovered refrigerants shall be filtered and dried for reuse. 1 Exam Prep Florida Building Code Mechanical,

14 Stop valves: All systems containing more than 6.6 pounds of refrigerant in systems using positive- displacement compressors shall have stop valves installed as follows: Field Test General: The design pressures for testing shall be those listed on the condensing unit, compressor or compressor unit nameplate Test gases: Tests shall be performed with an inert dried gas including, but not limited to, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Oxygen, air, combustible gases and mixtures containing such gases shall not be used Declaration: A certificate of test shall be provide for all systems containing 55 pounds or more refrigerant Hydronic Piping 1204 Pipe Insulation Insulation Characteristics: Pipe insulation installed in buildings shall conform to the requirements shall have a maximum flame spread index of 25 and a smoke-developed index not exceeding Piping Installation Clearance to combustibles: A pipe in a hydronic piping system in which the exterior temperature exceeds 250 F shall have a minimum clearance of 1 inch to combustible materials Steam piping pitch: Steam piping shall be installed to drain to the boiler or the steam trap. Steam systems shall not have drop pockets that reduce the capacity of the steam piping Tests General: Hydronic piping systems other than ground but not less than 100 psi Embedded Piping Materials: Piping for heating panels shall be standard-weight steel pipe. Type L copper tubing rated at 100 psi at 180 F Pressurizing during installation: Piping to be embedded in concrete shall be pressure tested prior to pouring concrete. Fuel oil shall be supplied by a transfer pump or automatic pump or by other approved means Return piping: Return piping shall connect to the top of the fuel oil tank Vent piping: Liquid fuel vent pipes shall terminate outside of buildings at a point not less than 2 feet measured vertically or horizontally from any building opening Oil Gauging Inside tanks: The gauging of inside tanks by means of measuring sticks shall not be permitted Fuel Oil Valves Building shutoff: A shutoff valve shall be installed on the fuel-oil supply line at the entrance to the building Solar Systems 1402 Installation Expansion tanks: Liquid single-phase solar energy systems shall be equipped with expansion tanks sized in accordance with Section Heat Transfer Fluids Flash Point: The flash point of actual heat transfer fluid temperature of the fluid attained in the collector Flammable gases and liquids: A flammable liquid or gas shall not be utilized in occupancies classified in Group H or F shall not be lower unless approved.
