Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Equipment Sewer Cleaning Tools Cleaning Methods GIS Integration
Cleaning Trucks Selection of Truck based on the application Water pump and vacuum system based on scope of work. Larger pipe and quantity of debris may require larger pumps and more vacuum capacity City applications may require smaller trucks when access and street congestion is limiting factor. Does the application require Positive Displacement (PD) or Fan for vacuum? extended hose?
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Equipment Sewer Cleaning Tools Cleaning Methods GIS Integration
Cleaning Tools Selection of equipment based on application. Nozzle selection very important!! Factors such as pipe diameter, pipe material, expected debris levels, and access. Larger Pipe and higher levels of debris will require larger cleaning nozzles capable of moving debris with higher volumes of water. Shown is a storm drain completely infiltrated with roots and dirt. A chain flail cutting tool was used to clean the line 100%
Tier I & II Nozzles Tier I Nozzle - Lower purchase price - Disposable - Drilled Orifices -Poor Fluid Mechanics Tier II Nozzle - Moderate cost - Replaceable Jet inserts - Poor/Fair Fluid Mechanics -Up to 60% efficiency rating - Most common upgrade in the industry - 30% efficiency rating -Common in the industry
High Efficiency Tier III Design with individual water channels
Basics of Tier Design Tier III Fluid Mechanics smoothly reverse water without turbulence and minimal energy loss Tier I & II with flat bottoms create water turbulence and great energy loss
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Tier lll Nozzles Highest Initial Cost Good/Excellent fluid mechanics Replaceable Jet inserts Highest Performance with titanium ceramic Jet inserts High Grade Stainless Steel Precision machining and assembly 80%-90% efficiency rating
Testing Nozzle Performance KEG nozzle test device, equipped with digital flow meter, pressure gauge, load cell and digital force readout. Operating in an 8 inch pipe with nozzle approximately 9 feet from the impact plate.
How Tier lll efficiencies benefit you. With same truck input With lower truck input Three times the power over Tier 1 50% more power over Tier ll Greater cleaning and pulling power Reduced water consumption Reduced fuel consumption Reduced wear and tear on equipment Reduced noise and heat
Cleaning Nozzle Configurations Depending on application the amount of jets and the angle will dictate the best tool for the application Smaller angles give better thrust and overall cleaning of pipe Larger angles clean the entire diameter of the pipe better and are better suited for larger diameter pipes and storm drains.
Sewer Cleaning Tools Chisel Nozzle Good propulsion / penetration Penetrating Nozzle Rear jets and one forward
Sewer Cleaning Tools Keg Torpedo Nozzle Tier 3 nozzle with 12 and 18 degree, stainless steel, and replacement ceramic jets Tier llldual degree nozzle for thrust and cleaning Supplied in various angle configurations (18 and 25 degree)
Spinning Nozzles Ideal for Roots, Grease and encrusted materials. Rotating Head provides cutting mechanism to remove materials from wall Replaceable carbide nozzles with extended life Jet angles depends on type of cleaning required General cleaning or descaling set up Descaling nozzle moves less debris
Sewer Cleaning Tools Root Saws Cleans 95% of the diameter of the pipe typically in the range of 6 to 15 Pipe. Must have access to both manholes.
Sewer Cleaning Tools Floor Cleaning Nozzle Large diameter and heavy debris applications with 8-10 jets
New Technology Camera Nozzles for Pipe Assessment
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Calcium Removal Chain Flail Wart Hog Descaling High Speed cutters Id - TEC Takes Time!!!!!
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Equipment Sewer Cleaning Tools Cleaning Methods GIS Integration
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Cleaning Procedures Select nozzle based on size of pipe and assumed conditions. Consider Access and if upstream and downstream manholes are accessible Set up at downstream manhole is ideal Wash down manhole and direct nozzle upstream for cleaning. Ensure the upstream manhole is reached and pull back at appropriate speeds to clean the pipe and remove all debris Vacuum any debris or material brought back to the manhole. If grease or roots are present, change cleaning tool to spinning nozzle or root saw.
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Cleaning Procedures Step cleaning, necessary in some instances but with proper tool selection and proper outgoing and pull back speeds maybe not. Proper selected nozzles can properly clean the pipe in 1-2 passes When there are large amounts of debris and when cleaning large diameter pipe, it is good practice to clean the first LF of pipe using step cleaning methods. This will give you an idea of the amount of debris in a given section of pipe.
Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Cleaning Procedures Maintenance and proactive approach to cleaning Identify areas to be cleaned for the year. Depending on the City that maybe cleaning the entire City every year or alternating half each year. Enhanced Maintenance Areas (Trouble Spots) identified and cleaned quarterly or more as needed. Siphons typically cleaned at the same time. Lift Stations to be cleaned on a regular interval based on the level of cleaning observed. This may be 2-6 times a year. If heavy amounts of ragging and grease are observed, it is encouranged to increase the cleaning frequency

Sewer and Storm Drain Cleaning Methods Considerations when Bidding Cleaning and CCTV Inspection Bids Does the Scope of work show the locations of the work to be performed Is there updated GIS Mapping available and will that be supplied as part of the scope of work. Is the current manhole and asset ID s acceptable? What is the break down of Size of Pipe and associated lengths What are the Traffic Control Requirements beyond standard MUTCD or WATCH Are Traffic Control Plans required and to what degree Stamped by Engineer? Are permits required and what are the typical fees Does the City require two man crews for cleaning and inspection Consider the logistics and accessibility of the manholes Is there an area to decant liquids and dump debris What percentage of the streets are residential vs arterial What percentage of the manholes are located in easements What type of pre-cleaning is needed prior to CCTV Inspection What is the final deliverable Printed Reports, DVD, Hard Drives, Shape files, condition assessment. Recommendations??
