5 User Manual 1. Introduction Thank you for buying a product from Specac. The Vacuum Pump GS03640 is a dual voltage operation (220 volts and 110 volts - two stage) vacuum pump capable of pulling a vacuum to 0.05 Torr or better. It is an ideal vacuum pump to use with the Specac Accessories that have the capability of being operated under these vacuum conditions. The vacuum pump has the following features. It is designed for normal starting in low temperature and low voltage conditions. (Typically temperatures at or above 5 C with a +/- 10% rated voltage. An air passage prevents any pump oil from returning into the pipeline or vacuum vessel being pumped after the vacuum pump is stopped. There is an inbuilt oil mist eliminating device and it has an oil/gas separator at the air exhaust outlet which removes any oil contamination in the air exhaust. The pump operates at a high ultimate vacuum with low noise. Each vacuum pump has been factory tested for its vacuum pump speed in both CFM and micron units. The Vacuum Pump GS03640 is supplied along with an appropriate kit of parts (a pressure gauge, vacuum tubing and particular connecting unions) compatible for immediate use with the appropriate Specac accessories. Please take time to familiarize yourself with the features and the operating instructions of this vacuum pump. Routine care and maintenance of the vacuum pump will provide years of reliable service. 3

Special pipework and fittings for connectivity and operation whilst evacuating an appropriate Specac Accessory. (See list of accessories in Section 5 of this manual).. Container of oil to fill vacuum pump (275mls). Unpack the Vacuum pump and parts carefully and prepare the items for use. 7 User Manual 3. Operation of the Vacuum Pump Warning! Before the vacuum pump can be operated it must first be filled with oil. A container of approximately 275mls of oil has been supplied with the vacuum pump. The oil capacity of this two stage pump is 260mls. This oil must be used for operation of the vacuum pump. Use of any other oil type, or a contaminated oil will invalidate any warranty on the vacuum pump Fig 1.Two Stage (Dual Voltage Capability) Vacuum Pump GS

8 Vacuum Pump Kit Filling With Oil This vacuum pump has been factory tested and supplied with only trace amounts of oil. Oil must be added before operation. Failure to add any oil will damage the vacuum pump and invalidate any warranty. See Fig 1. for identification of parts described. 1) Make sure the oil drain valve plug (1) located below the pump front casing is closed before attempting to fill with oil. (Screw clockwise.) 2) Remove the red coloured oil fill cap (2) from the top of the vapour discharge/exhaust and oil filling port (3). Note: The cap (2) is a dust cover used for initial transportation purposes before use of the vacuum pump. In operation of the vacuum pump the cap (2) must be removed, but the cap (2) should be retained and placed back in position when the vacuum pump is not operating or is being stored. 3) Insert the oil container into the fill port (3). Note: The vapour discharge/oil fill port (3) is easily removable if required. It contains an internal check valve to prevent escape of liquid oil. 4) Slowly add oil until the oil level rises towards the top (maximum indicator) of the oil level sight glass (4). (There is a maximum and minimum level indicator.) Take care not to overfill with oil. The oil capacity is 260mls. Checking the Oil Level 5) Open the gas ballast valve (5) one complete turn anticlockwise. This valve is the small brass knurled and threaded knob fitting located next to the carry handle (6). 6) Close the pump inlet manifold valve handle (7) by turning clockwise before switching on the vacuum pump to check the oil level. 6

9 User Manual 7) Now turn on the vacuum pump. There is an on/off rocker switch (8) on the motor cover housing. Next to the on/off switch (8) is a protected slide switch (9) which allows for change of the voltage supply between 220volts or 110 volts for operation of the vacuum pump. Warning: Before switching on the vacuum pump check that the slide switch (9) is set for your mains voltage supply. The switch (9) position for voltage can be changed by placing the blade of screwdriver into the tab recess on the switch and sliding up or down as required. 8) Switch on the pump and run for two minutes. Observe the oil level while the pump is running. The oil level seen through the sight glass (4) should be between the maximum and minimum levels. 9) If the oil level is low, slowly open the inlet manifold handle (7) by turning anticlockwise and run the pump for a further 15 seconds, then stop the pump (switch (8) off ) and observe the oil level again. Add a small amount of oil as needed by following the step at 4). Evacuation Performance The Gas Ballast Valve (5) The gas ballast valve (5) must be partially opened (one turn anticlockwise) for the first part of any evacuation procedure. After about two minutes of pumping, close the valve (5) by turning clockwise and continue the evacuation procedure to reach an ultimate vacuum. Failure to close the gas ballast valve during high vacuum operation will result in a poor vacuum performance. During the first stages of an evacuation, vapours are highly concentrated. Unfortunately in some instances vapours will condense into a liquid and mix with the oil, thus reducing the oil s ability to produce a deep vacuum. The gas ballast valve (5) emits a controlled amount of dry air into the pump during compression to minimise condensation and keep the oil relatively clean during the first part of 7

10 Vacuum Pump Kit any evacuation procedure. It is therefore advised that periodically you should remove the gas ballast valve (5) (unscrew completely) and clean it from any contaminants or particulates to unblock the airways and clean or replace its sealing O-ring. Before replacing and tightening the gas ballast valve (5) back into the pump, lightly coat threaded surfaces with some of the vacuum pump oil. Changing Oil For the vacuum pump to reach an optimum pumping performance for a deep vacuum requirement, it needs clean, moisture free oil during evacuation. Dirty oil becomes a mixture of corrosive acids and water that affects the pumps ability to pull a deep vacuum. If dirty oil is left sitting in the pump, the sludge will rust and corrode internal surfaces of the vacuum pump thus shortening the pump s life. Specac recommends that after every evacuation procedure the oil should be checked for any contamination that may impair the performance of the vacuum pump. Care Safety Warning! Care must be taken when checking the oil to avoid contact with skin or eyes. Wear gloves and protective spectacles. The oil may be hot! Used oil must be properly disposed of in a leakproof corrosive resistant container according to local regulations. After every evacuation, while the pump is warm and the oil is thin, take a small sample of oil from the drain valve port (1). If the oil is contaminated, drain the oil from the pump by placing the vacuum pump on a level surface and open up the drain valve (1). Collect the waste oil in a suitable container and dispose it properly. If the vacuum pump has been sitting idle for more than one month, the oil is considered as contaminated, regardless of its appearance and should be changed as outlined above. To fill with new oil, follow the procedure as outlined in steps 1) to 4) on page 6. 8

11 User Manual 4. Pump Motor and General Safety General Safety! For general operation of the vacuum pump P/N GS03640, the pump and oil must be in a temperature environment above 1 C (0 F). The power line voltage supply must be within + or 10% to the voltage rating on the pump motor nameplate. The normal operating temperature of the pump is approximately 71 C (160 F) and so the pump is hot to touch. The line voltage and the general ambient temperature will affect the normal operating temperature. The vacuum pump is designed for continuous duty and will run for extended periods without overheating. The pump motor has an automatic resetting thermal overload protection feature. If the motor will not start the pump, the thermal protection feature may have become enabled. Therefore, disconnect the pump from the system, wait for about 15 minutes to allow the motor to cool down and then try switching on and operating again. Warnings A) Do not evacuate combustible, explosive or poisonous gases. B) Do not evacuate gases that corrode metal or will react chemically with the pump oil. C) The temperature of the evacuated gas shall not exceed 80 C (176 F) and the ambient temperature shall be between 5 C (41 F) and 60 C (140 F). D) Do not operate the pump without oil. E) Do not touch the pumps hot surfaces during operation. F) Do not block the air/exhaust outlet. As a caution, to reduce the danger of electrical shock, keep the pump indoors and do not expose it to rain or wet conditions. 9

12 Vacuum Pump Kit Dangers G) With an electrical socket that is grounded, the operating voltage is rated at + or 10%. The electrical connection must be well grounded, or else electrical shock may be caused. Should the power cord or plug require repair or replacement, do not connect the grounded wire to any flat adapter connector. If you are in doubt about the correct connectivity for grounding, seek professional help from a qualified electrician. Do not change the structure of the supplied power adaptor plug. H) When pulling out the power plug from its socket, pull the plug and not the cable. I) Do not place heavy objects on, or constrict the power cable. J) Do not use a broken plug or socket. K) Do not pull out the power plug when hands are wet. L) Do not pull out, insert the power plug or switch on power to the pump where flammable gases may be present. 10

Inlet Manifold Connections The two stage Vacuum Pump P/N GS03640 is ideal to use with Specac s range of accessories that are capable of being operated under vacuum conditions of 0.05Torr or better. 14 Vacuum Pump Kit For use of the Vacuum Pump Kit with ANY Specac accessory the parts that consist of the pressure gauge to the T connector, vacuum pump connection and large size bore vacuum tubing must be fitted to the central top inlet port of the valve manifold (7) vacuum pump as seen from Fig 2. 15 User Manual Fig 3 shows the vacuum tubing assembly parts that are connected to the Vacuum Pump as shown in Fig 2. Depending upon which Specac accessory you are using specific connection parts of tubing and connectors have been supplied that are variously fitted into the open end of the large bore vacuum tubing of this assembly of parts. 10 Fig 3. T-Connector, Pressure Gauge and large bore tubing that fits to the central manifold port (7) of the vacuum pump For Use with the Variable Temperature Cell Holder GS21525, Variable Temperature Cuvette Holder GS21530 and Environmental Chamber GS19930 The open ended part of the large bore tubing (10) seen in Fig 3. is directly connected to the 3/8 O.D. barbed vacuum port connection on the top of the Variable Temperature Cell dewar part and to an outlet VCO coupling with 1/4" tubing supplied with the Environmental Chamber. Please consult the instruction manual for each accessory to identify the appropriate vacuum connection port and fittings. 13

Small bore tubing and barbed valve tap connection that fits to the large bore tubing (10) The barbed valve tap connection (11) is directly connected by fitting into the open ended part of the large bore tubing (10) as shown at Fig 3. A stem elbow piece (13) is fitted into the open ended part of the small bore tubing (12). (See Fig 5). The elbow piece connector (13) is then used to attach to the 8mm O.D. ribbed vacuum pipe of the Evacuable Pellet Dies. Please consult the instruction manual for the Evacuable Pellet Dies to identify the vacuum pipe connection. 14

The barbed valve tap connection (11) is directly connected by fitting into the open ended part of the large bore tubing (10). The small bore tubing open end (12) is then fitted directly to the 1/4 O.D. gas flow tube outlets of the Cyclone or Tornado long pathlength gas cells. Please consult the instruction manual for these gas cell types to identify the gas flow outlet tube connection. 15

18 Vacuum Pump Kit For Use with the Storm 10H Gas Cell GS05670 Fig 6 shows the large bore tubing and pressure gauge assembly (seen as Fig 3.) fitted with a barbed PEEK vacuum pipe adapter fitting with 1/8 BSP threading at its open end (14). This PEEK fitting with silicone gasket (15) is supplied with the GS05670 Storm 10H Gas Cell for connection to the tubing supplied with the GS03640 Vacuum Pump Kit. The PEEK fitting is screw fitted to the Swagelok fitting connections supplied for the valve port on GS The silicone gasket (15) is used to seal between the PEEK Valve fitting (14) and the Swagelok connection. This PEEK fitting with silicone gasket (17) is supplied with both the GS05850 and GS05855 High Temperature High Pressure Cells for connection to the tubing supplied with the GS03640 Vacuum Pump Kit. The PEEK fitting is screw fitted to the Swagelok fitting connection supplied for the outlet gas port on GS05850 or GS The silicone gasket (17) is used to seal between the PEEK Valve fitting (16) and the Swagelok connection.
