3 Why recycle? Recycled waste means that the material can be reused. By recycling products, we contribute to lowering the CO emissions by preventing production of new products. 2 PLASTIC We are saving two kilos of oil for every kilo of recycled plastic. At the same time we are reducing the CO 2 emissions with 1,5-2,5 kilos. Recycled plastic can be reused as plastic shopping bags, fleece products and football jerseys. GARDEN WASTE Garden waste should be kept in your own garden, and not litter the environment. In order to prevent alien plants to spread, you may deliver your garden waste to Solgård landfill where it will be made into compost. The amount of recycled paper in Norway equals the amount of CO emissions from cars. Paper and cardboard are 2 PAPER AND CARDBOARD recycled into newspapers, envelopes, new paper and cardboard. Paper can be recycled up to 5 times. HAZARDOUS WASTE Hazardous waste which is not disposed of in a proper manner may be of threat to animals, nature and people. By delivering this to Solgård landfill you are helping to prevent this from happening. GLASS AND METAL TINS If we use recycled glass in the production of new glass products, we would save 20% energy. Recycled glass can become new bottles, jars and isolation materials. Recycled metal tins can become nails, screws, paper clips and garden tools. ELECTRONIC WASTE Electronic products often contain dangerous metals and materials. It is free to dispose these at Solgård landfill. At the landfill the electronic waste is dismantled and sorted in order to be recycled. MOSS KOMMUNE 3

4 What s in your waste bin? The amount of waste in Norway has almost doubled over the past 10 years. Where is the waste coming from? WHAT S IN YOUR WASTE BIN? The best waste can t be recycled, because it doesn t exist! Consumption creates waste. Everyone agrees that it is too much packaging around products and that this should be reduced Did you know: Since 1990 the import of sport clothes has fivefold and the import of furniture has more than tripled. 5 WHAT ABOUT OURSELVES? Can we create less waste and recycle more? 25% of all food we buy goes to waste. That equals every fourth shopping bag. You can do something about this: You can plan your meals better in order to not buy more than you need and you can eat leftovers from yesterday s dinner for lunch. If the produce has expired according to its date stamp does not mean that it is gone bad. Use your senses to see if the food is eatable. It s people between the ages of 25 and 39 who throw away the most food. Those over 60 throw away the least. In 2012, 465 kilos waste was disposed per person in Moss. Not every family, but every inhabitant. That means that a family of four people threw away approx. 1,9 tons of waste. We threw away 7% more waste here in Moss than the average Norwegian did in We recycled 46% of all waste delivered at Solgård landfill and in our home-recycling systems SARPSBORG HALDEN ASKIM 5

6 Collection scheme for households In Moss municipality paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic and residual waste is recycled and collected at your household. For prices, have a look at the homepage: Prislister Collection days: WHEN WILL THE WASTE BE COLLECTED? Residual waste will be collected every week, while the other recycled refuse will be collected every fourth week. Check out in order to find the exact day for your address. For residual waste, the price will increase along with the size of the garbage bin. For the other recyclable waste, the price will be the same no matter the size of the bin. Those who use a plastic bag to gather their recyclable plastic may put out as many bags as they like on the day of collection. 6

9 THE PLASTIC SHOULD BE CLEAN BEFORE RECYCLING IT. FROM HYGIENICALLY CONCERNS YOU SHOULD NOT THROW DIRTY PLASTIC IN THE BIN. IT IS ONLY PLASTIC PACKAGING THAT SHOULD BE RECYCLED. THIS SHOULD BE THROWN IN THE BIN FOR PLASTIC: Plastic foil and plastic bags Plastic bottles (from shampoo, juice and deodorants) Plastic packaging (example from potato chips, coffee bags and yoghurt) Refill bags Refillposer for såpe og lignende. In order to compete, you must rinse, fold and collect at least six drinking cartons in a seventh carton. The plastic opening may be visible. Write the name and telephone number of the person or organization that you wish to win on the front of the carton. Put the cube of cartons in the bin for recyclable paper. Everyone can compete and win: households or organizations, schools, kindergartens etc. Prizes for 1, 6 million kr is annually handed out, divided over 120 prizes of ,- and 4 prizes of ,- 10

11 COMPRISE THE CARTON AND CARDBOARDS BEFORE THROWING THEM IN THE BIN FOR PAPER. REMEMBER TO NOT THROW ANYTHING ELSE IN THE BIN. In total 750 millions drinking cartons are consumed per year. This equals tons of recyclable paper. MOSS KOMMUNE 11

Remember to not throw the plastic bag in which you carry the glass and metal in the same bin. 18 Garden waste It is free to deliver garden waste to Solgård landfill. A THREAT TO NATURAL VEGETATION The environment should be managed so that the plants and animals that are found naturally are secure. As with other types of waste that is disposed of in nature, garden waste is also considered littering - and is thus illegal. Many have established adverse habits around garden waste and consider it as a type of waste that dissolves and disappears by itself. However, garden waste does create problems because other type of waste often is thrown in these types of landfills. Garden waste containing alien plant species (seeds and roots) can also threaten biodiversity seeing that they compete with the native vegetation. On you can find a list of alien species in Norway. 19 General information If you are in doubt about how to recycle your waste, visit sortere.no for more information. ORGANIC WASTE You have the possibility to borrow a compost bin for organic waste from Moss municipality. It costs 200,- to have it delivered to your address. CAR TIRES Car tires contain different types of rubber, but also some heavy metals and environment toxins. Old tiers can be delivered to the retailer or at Solgård landfill. BULKY WASTE Bulky waste are objects that are too large to fit in the residual waste bin, for instance furniture and bikes. These items should be delivered at Solgård landfill. TIMBER Timber can be divided into three different sub categories: clean timber, painted and lacquered timber and impregnated timber. Collected timber is usually burned in order to subtract energy. GYPSUM Gypsum is normally used during construction in order to make walls and decoration. Gypsum can be recycled and should be delivered at Solgård landfill. TREATED / PRESERVED TIMBER Treated / preserved timber is poison and should be delivered as hazardous waste at Solgård landfill. MOSS KOMMUNE 19
