7 Glossary Glossary Adjustable over-temperature protection This refers to a protective feature which alerts the user (audible or visual alarm) if the bath temperature rises above a user defined level. Cooling capacity Cooling capacity is a measure of a cooling unit s capacity to remove heat from a load to either to maintain or reduce the temperature of the load, the reverse of heating capacity, Watts. Dual-position bridge plate Stainless steel fixing for the circulator onto the bath allowing the display to face either way. External circulation pump Integral function of the circulator or separate high pressure pump allowing the bath liquid to be delivered away from the bath to provide temperature control at a particular location through a closed or open loop. Flow rate The maximum volume of liquid pumped by the circulator in a given time. Refrigerated/Heated circulating bath A heating circulator attached to a refrigerated bath. The combination is used for temperature control of samples or often external locations where temperature control needs to extract heat and provide cooling. Temperature is controlled by a combination of the heating circulator and the refrigeration unit, a working temperature range below and above ambient temperature that either withdraws heat from the heat transfer liquid (heat sink) or applies heat to the heat transfer liquid (heat source). Single point calibration The measurement of the actual liquid temperature using a standard or reference thermometer against the displayed temperature on the bath. If there is a difference, the bath can be adjusted to match the reading on the reference thermometer, allowing a correction factor to be applied evenly over the bath temperature curve. Temperature presets A feature which allows commonly used temperatures to be saved into the equipment memory and quickly reselected. Typically Grant water baths have the capacity to store 3 preset temperatures. Temperature setting resolution The number of decimal points to which the temperature can be controlled. Temperature stability This shows how precisely an instrument maintains set-point temperature. Typically it is displayed as a plus or delta e.g. a set point of 19.0 C and a temperature stability of ±0.02 C, i.e. the temperature may vary from C to 19.2 C. Temperature uniformity Uniformity is determined by measuring liquid temperature in different locations within the bath. A uniformity value represents how close the temperatures are to one another.
