4 I. DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION The RCM-501 automatic washer is designed to decontaminate and disinfect respiratory protection equipment. The washer is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) that allows the length of the various operating cycles to be adjusted to best suite specific cleaning requirements. The basic operation of the machine consists of three distinct cleaning cycles. First, the wash cycle is run, followed by a flush cycle, and then ends with a rinse cycle. During the wash cycle, detergent can be automatically added to the wash water. A disinfectant can be added during the rinse cycle. The flush cycle is used to clean out the sump and water pump between the wash and rinse cycles; ensuring that clean water is used to rinse the respirators. In order to conserve water, the rinse water is re-used for the next wash cycle. The control of the machine is done through a soft touch keypad and LCD display. The display can be set to a dynamic mode that indicates the part of the wash cycle the machine is currently performing. II. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION (Reference Appendix RCM 501 Operating Sequence) 1. 5 IV. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS - RCM Set the machine in place and level it across the front and from front to back. (Feet are adjustable). 2. Make final plumbing connections: (a) Install a shut-off valve in the 120 F water supply line. A full flow ball value or similar is recommended. (b) Install a pressure regulator set to 30 psi inlet pressure with psi gauge to monitor inlet pressure. (c) Connect drain using the 2 MNPT connection provided on the machine. 3. Make electrical connection: a. A six foot power cord with a NEMA 5-15P plug is provided. A dedicated circuit is recommended. Size breaker and wire based on 115V, 15 amps, 1 phase, 60 Hz. Wiring must meet local codes. Be sure machine is properly grounded. A ground fault interrupt circuit or outlet should be installed in power supply circuit for added personnel protection. V. WASHER START-UP NOTE: See page 8 RCM 501 Basic Operating Menu Flow Chart provides a flow chart of all the Maple Systems Key pad screens used for normal operations. Referring to this chart will help familiarize the operator with the menu flow during start up. Step 1 - Step 2 - Turn on water supply to the machine. Turn electric power supply switch to the "On" position (user supplied disconnect switch). Note Maple Systems Interface will initialize and will be standing by for operator input. Step 3 - Step 4 - Fill the machine to approximately 1/2" below the overflow tube by pressing the "fill" toggle switch upward. The overflow tube is the standpipe with a mushroom shaped top located in the center of the sump, which can be viewed when the washer door is opened. Note the time it takes to fill and use this value (in seconds) for the water fill timer. This manual fill is only necessary when starting the machine for the first time, or after the machine has been manually drained. Attach both the detergent and sanitizer containers. The recommended sanitizer is standard household bleach (Clorox) of 5.25% concentration. An injection rate of 7-8 ml of this bleach into 2 gallons of water results in a PPM sanitizing solution of chlorine. This concentration has proved very effective and has been accepted by major respirator manufacturers as harmless to their respirators. The RCM 501 Sump holds approximately 2 gallons when filled as directed in Step 3. The amount of detergent injected will depend upon the type of detergent selected. Only non-to-low foaming detergents can be used in this machine due to a high-speed pump impeller. Too much detergent will cause the pump to cavitate, thus reducing 2

6 spray pressure and subsequent loss of cleansing ability. Experimentation with the amount and type of detergent may be necessary. Caution Damage to the pump may occur if a non-recommended detergent is used. The recommended detergent is Radiation Protection Systems, Inc. MasKlenze MK-1, P/N HH Set detergent pump to 15 ml for MasKlenze MK-1 detergent. Step 5 - NOTE: Prime the detergent injector pump by actuating the toggle switch in the "DETER" direction as required until detergent enters the mixing chamber on the machine. Prime the sanitizer injector pump by actuating the toggle switch in the "SANT" direction as required until the sanitizing agent enters the mixing chamber on the machine. This step is performed only on initial start-up and when a detergent or sanitizer bottle is emptied and is replaced. Periodic injector sampling is recommended. Refer to section VI for instructions on adjusting detergent or sanitizer injection rates. Step 6 - Step 7 - Close machine door if open. Press function key F2, This will bring up the Operation Screen. To initiate run mode press the CLEAR key followed the 2 key. To input the new SET value press the ENTER key. The washer will now begin its cycle. Note The LOW WATER alarm may flash for a few seconds after the main pump engages. This is normal and is due to the slight delay in pressure as the pump ramps up in speed. If the door is opened during the cycle, the machine will stop. When the door is closed the machine will continue operating. At the end of the wash cycle, the water drains from the machine and the machine is automatically refilled with a fresh supply for the rinse cycle. The water in the machine from the rinse does not drain; it remains in the machine and is used for the next wash cycle. Refilling the machine with hot water is recommended if there is a long delay between loads, allowing the rinse water to cool. Step 8 - Due to differences in water pressure, the water level may have to be adjusted. Water level in the washer sump tank is important to achieving optimum performance. After machine completes its first cycle, open door and observe water level in machine. It must be within 1" to 1/2" of the top of the overflow drain tube located in the center of the tank (Tube has mushroom-type cap on top). Increase the water level by pressing the F2 key, then press the F1 key. Press the F5 key to enter into the fill timer setup screen. Press the CLEAR key and enter a number from 0 to 180, which corresponds to the number of seconds that the fill cycle will continue. Set the new value by pressing the ENTER key. 3

7 Note what the number of seconds indicated by TMR= ##. Increase this number for a higher water level; decrease this number for a lower water level. The timer set up screen can be accessed at any time by pressing the F1 key. Repeat this above method for setting up detergent, sanitizer, wash and rinse timers. Note A water level higher than recommended may cause an overflow condition. A water level to low may cause poor system performance and damage to the pump may occur. Allow machine to complete one full cycle, open door and observe water level. Repeat adjustment and machine operation until water level is within 1" of the top of the overflow drain plug. This adjustment should only be required during initial machine set up. Periodically observe water level during use and re-adjust if level becomes incorrect. Step 9 - When water level, detergent and sanitizer injection rates are satisfactory, the washer is ready for normal operation. Note Selecting HOLD during the WASH or RINSE cycle will cause the machine to stay in the respective cycle indefinitely. This operations screen can be accessed at any time by pressing the F10 key. Step 10 - When washing operations are complete, the controller will be in the READY mode. The washer sump tank should be drained by activating and holding the control panel switch in the "DRAIN" position. Secure power to the machine. Step 11- Clean the strainer basket and spray nozzles periodically. VI. CHEMICAL INJECTOR PUMP CALIBRATION 1. Locate detergent or hypochlorite containers in a suitable location where they are not susceptible to accidental spilling. 2. Attach detergent and sanitizer (bleach) suction tubes to detergent and bleach containers. 3. Turn on electrical power to the machine. 4. Activate the "DETER/SANI" switch in the "DETER" and SANI position as required to prime the pumps. (Pumps stop automatically at a preset time interval). 5. Remove the detergent pump discharge tube (top tube) from the mixing chamber on upper left side of washer and install it in a ml-graduated beaker or graduated cylinder. 4

8 6. Activate detergent pump by the "DETER/SANI" switch in the "DETER" position. Record level in graduated beaker. Adjust time to deliver 15 ml detergent for MasKlenze MK-1 detergent. 7. Remove the sanitizer discharge tube (middle tube) from the mixing chamber and repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 for the sanitizer pump. The graduated beaker should read 7 ml for 5.25% concentration bleach. If the injector pump needs adjustment. Press function key F1, then press the F4 to select the detergent timer or F3 to select the sanitizer timer. Increase or decrease the time to modify the injection rate. This number reflects the amount of time, in seconds, the injection pumps run during each injection cycle. 8. Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 for the sanitizer pump. The graduated beaker should read 7 ml (for 5.25% concentration bleach). Note If an operating pump should fail, select the built-in spare (lowest pump) and wire it appropriately. Only two pumps should be wired for operation at one time, the third pump is a built in spare.
