DuPont Refrigerants R22 market and the ISCEON retrofit options Airefrig November 2010 John McCormack Business Manager DuPont Chemicals and Fluoroproducts
HCFC Regulations & ISCEON
3 Actions Impacting Fluorochemicals 2010 ~ Montreal Protocol HCFC-22 is Going Away Suva 410A, ISCEON Climate Change Regulations HFC Phase down Next Gen Refrig, FEA, etc.
4 Australia and the Montreal Protocol The Montreal protocol (MP) called for the phase out of all Ozone depleting substances in Developed countries by 2020 and developing countries by To meet our obligations under the MP The department of environment water and Heritage (DEWH) set up a Quota system in 1996 and a phase down schedule on imports of HCFC s that effectively reduces the availability of HCFC s by 30 Ozone depleting tonnes (ODP) every two years after an initial 4 year Fixed cap. The department also banned the import or production of equipment containing HCFC s effective July 1 st 2010
5 Remaining phase down schedule Calendar Year HCFC Import Limit R22 equivalent Estimated demand** (ODP tonnes per year) MT per Year MT 2008, , , , * *This is intended as a service tail for long life equipment such as R123 Chillers. ** The market is estimated to contract by 100MT per year as older equipment is decommissioned and replaced with new equipment
6 During the Transition Period Businesses have three options: Convert existing system to alternative refrigerant Buy a new system that uses an alternative refrigerant Continue to operate existing system Establish a plan to replace/repair leaking equipment Recover and reuse refrigerant from equipment that is discarded Begin to transition to alternative refrigerants Many businesses have started to switch Consider amount of time needed to convert
7 Impacts R-22 is going away but it can be managed. R-22 supply shortages can be avoided through combination of: Tighter systems Better installation & service practices Retrofit of existing equipment Replacement with HFC equipment Increased recovery and reuse of HCFC-22 R-22 Prices in the future likely to be volatile Advanced Refrigeration is Expensive per Ton CO2e Retrofit Refrigerants offer the Lowest Total Cost Retrofits can provide a low cost supply of recovered R-22
HCFC - Options for Retrofit 8 Four Options Maintain operation using recycled R-22 = risk!! Replace with new equipment running on: ammonia hydrocarbons CO 2 HFC, e.g. Suva Keep running existing equipment on standard HFC schange of oil and further technical modifications are required: HFCs of the Suva range, e.g. R404A or R407C Keep running existing equipment only moderate modifications are necessary: retrofit with DuPont TM ISCEON 9 Series Refrigerants Attention
DuPont ISCEON HFC Retrofit Refrigerants 9 Proven, zero-odp cost-effective retrofit solutions for existing equipment using ODSs. Complete family of HFC retrofit refrigerants to replace: CFCs R-12, 502 HCFCs R-22 R-22 containing blends (e.g. MP39, HP80) Benefits: Cost-effective solution to manage through ODS phase-out and/or meet corporate mandates key element of smooth, orderly transition avoid premature equipment replacement realize the full useful life of the equipment free up cash for highest ROI investments

11 ISCEON MO99 The Latest Innovation from DuPont in Retrofit Refrigerants for R-22
12 ISCEON MO99 Developed and patented by DuPont. Combines R-22 pressure - enthalpy characteristics with mineral oil compatibility in a unique HFC refrigerant that can be used to replace R-22 over a wide range of evaporator temperatures.
13 ISCEON MO99 CUSTOMER QUOTE This was as close as you can get to a drop in. The only seals that were changed were the Schrader valve cores and the level gauge on the liquid receiver. Upon start-up after the retrofit, each rack system charged with MO99 pulled down quickly, with case temperatures and operating parameters comparable to R-22 performance. It was a much smoother retrofit with no oil change, no TXV change, and no set point changes. Paul Albietz, Engineering & Refrigeration Service manager in Jersey City, NJ
Supermarket and Condensing Unit Field Tests R-22 Low and Medium Temp Racks converted during past year in various compressors, cases, coils, TXV s Multiple condensing units (no oil separator) w/ 30ft risers and long runs 14 Basic ISCEON MO99 Retrofit Procedure -Recover R-22 -Replace critical seals / elastomers, filter driers -Evacuate, charge w/ ISCEON MO99, start-up, and monitor system -Leak check, optimize set-points if needed -Feedback from contractors and major end users - quick switch, easy start-up and pull down, minimal adjustments - no major leaks, oil return issues, compressor issues, erratic case temperatures or complaints from store owners
15 ISCEON MO99 THE BASICS HFC blend ODP: Zero GWP: 1890 (SAR), 2264 (AR4) ASHRAE number: R-438A ASHRAE classification: A1 non-flammable UL approvals: Expected 1Q2010 Temperature Glide: 4 ºC effective glide measured at the evaporator Standard filter driers can be used
16 ISCEON MO99 QUICK SWITCH For most R-22 Systems No expansion valve changes No line set changes Minimal set point adjustments Meets R-22 ASTM vessel pressure ratings Change critical seals and filter driers
17 ISCEON MO99 NON-DISRUPTIVE For most R-22 systems No oil changes required No plugging of TXVs strainers or EPRs No plugging of filters or driers No other collateral POE associated issues
18 ISCEON MO99 VERSATILE Designed for Direct Expansion (DX) Systems One Refrigerant For All Applications -- Air Conditioning -- Medium Temperature Refrigeration -- Low Temperature Refrigeration
