What a Tumble Dryer Does Optional Extras A tumble dryer gently tumbles the wet clothes in a current of warm air after they have been spun in a washing machine or spin dryer. Moisture is evaporated until the clothes are quite dry, much like a speeded up version of what takes place outdoors in a fresh breeze on a fine sunny day, in a clean fresh atmosphere. A good tumble dryer reduces unwanted creases as it dries, creases that may have been put in during spinning. Drip-dry shirts dried in a dryer will be more crease-free than the same shirt given the same wash treatment and hung up to dry. Most materials will benefit from this effect, including cottons and linens, synthetic materials and mixtures of both. In some cases the need to iron will be eliminated, but it is important in order to achieve the maximum benefit that you should not overload the dryer. It is better to dry two small loads rather than one large load if crease removal is important. This will use slightly more electricity in drying than one large load, but will save on ironing. If you must iron then the maximum loadings given in the instructions will give the greatest efficiency in use of electricity. Towels will be soft and bulky after drying in a tumble dryer, nappies will be smooth and fluffy, unlike the same articles which tend to be flattened and stiff when dried statically. Garments may be quickly aired after storage or warmed before use. Many fabrics used in the manufacturing of clothing and household textiles tend to undergo some change of size when laundered. This size change is due to relaxation of the fibres, which have been stretched during spinning and weaving, and which tend to return to their unstretched state when immersed in water. These fibres are normally stretched again in use, and even hanging wet on a line stretches the material to some extent. Tumble drying does not put tension on the fabrics as line drying does, and the difference may therefore appear more noticeable when garments are dry. The following may be obtained as optional extras for use with your dryer. Always quote the serial number and model number of your dryer as stated on the rating plate when ordering any kits. Exhaust Kit (see page 7) Extended Exhaust Kit Wall/Window Kit (see page 7) Wall Hanging Kit 38501A (see page 7) Note: Be sure to use only genuine accessories. There are items available manufactured by other companies which it is claimed will fit our products, but these may not fit satisfactorily and can impair the performance. 3

Cautionary Notes IMPORTANT Before operating your machine read the cautionary notes below and familiarise yourself with the way it works by carefully reading these instructions. Allow children to play with or otherwise interfere with the dryer. Allow the air inlet at the back of the dryer, the air outlet or vent hose to be obstructed. Direct the vent hose outlet towards the air intake at the back of the machine. The tumble dryer must not recycle exhaust air. Switch the machine off leaving a hot load in the drum. Tumble dry without the filter in position. Exceed the maximum load capacity recommended or place dripping wet items in the drum. Use the dryer on a carpeted floor where the pile height would prevent air from entering the dryer from the base. Allow lint to collect around the dryer. Use the dryer for commercial drying, the dryer is only suitable for domestic use. Discharge the exhaust air into a flue which is used for exhausting fumes from other appliances burning gas or other fuels. In order to Tumble dry articles that have NOT been well washed in alleviate water and detergent then well rinsed and spun. fire hazards: Dry articles that are contaminated with flammable substances such as: Petrol, Oil, Paint, Cleaning Solvents, Wax, Hair Lacquer, Creams, Cooking Fat or Oil. Tumble dry articles that have had chemicals used for cleaning. Tumble dry : Rubber, Foam Rubber, Plastic. Plastic Foam, Nappy Pants or Liners, Polythene or Paper Any dry cleaned garments. Large, very bulky items including duvets and sleeping bags. Items not recommended for tumble drying, are marked 4

Cautionary Notes ALWAYS When the dryer is not in use, switch off at the wall, remove plug, close the door. ALWAYS Comply with the specified electrical requirements. ALWAYS Ensure that your dryer is installed correctly and has adequate ventilation. (See page 7). ALWAYS Terminate every programme with the cool cycle provided on the timer. ALWAYS Clean the filter, it is essential that the filter is kept clear of fluff at all times (See Page 9). ALWAYS Observe the rules for drying woollen garments: Woollen articles should not be dried in a tumble dryer unless they are labelled Superwash, Machine-washable or have the May be tumble dried Symbol If in any doubt do not tumble dry wool. Unlike other materials, the mechanism of wool shrinkage is irreversible, i.e. it will not stretch back to original size and shape. ALWAYS Buy genuine accessories and spares. CAUTIONARY NOTE CHILDREN: A CHILD COULD CLIMB INTO AN UNATTENDED TUMBLE DRYER. WHEN THE MACHINE IS NOT IN USE SWITCH OFF AT THE WALL SOCKET, REMOVE THE PLUG AND CLOSE THE DOOR. WARNING: When operating the dryer, there has to be adequate ventilation to avoid the back flow of gases into the room from appliances burning other fuels, including open fires. CAUTION: When the dryer is in use avoid touching the rear of the dryer as it may be hot! 5

Electrical Requirements Supply This appliance should be connected to the mains supply via a suitable switched socket in an accessible position. WARNING: This appliance must be earthed. Refer to Rating plate for Voltage supply. Changing the Plug The flexible mains lead is supplied connected to a BS1363 fused plug with a 13 amp capacity. Rewirable Plug The wires in the mains lead are in accordance with the following: GREEN & YELLOW TO EARTH GREEN/YELLOW BLUE BROWN EARTH NEUTRAL LIVE BLUE TO NEUTRAL CORD CLAMP 13 AMP FUSE BROWN TO LIVE If the plug is changed, the coloured wires in the mains lead may not correspond with the colours of the markings identifying the terminals in the plug. Therefore wire is as shown above. Should the mains lead ever require replacement, this operation must be carried out by a competent person. Only use specially prepared 3 core recommended spares cable. Moulded Plug The correct replacement of the fuse is identified by the colour coding in the base of the plug or the colour that is embossed in words in the base of the fuse recess, or elsewhere on the plug. Only 13 amp replacement fuses which are ASTA approved to BS1362 should be fitted. After replacement of a fuse in the plug, the fuse cover must be refitted. Fuse covers may be obtained from your local Regional Electricity Company. WARNING: The plug must not be used without a fuse cover. NOTE: Replacement mains cables must only be obtained from our recommended Spares stockist. NOTE: IF IN DOUBT CONSULT A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN. 6

Installation There is no internal packing to be removed before use, but do make sure the drum is quite empty. We advise that the drum is wiped out before its very first use to remove any transit dust or other matter that may have entered the machine since it left our factory. As air is intended to circulate around the base of the machine it should not be used on any carpeted surface where the pile height would prevent air flowing over the whole of the base, i.e. there should be a gap between the floor covering and the base of the cabinet. Your dryer vents the moist air through the door. The dryer should be placed where air can freely circulate around it, preferably near a window which can be opened to reduce the possibility of condensation occurring while the dryer is in use. Alternatively, an exhaust hose which will carry the damp air out of the room can be purchased as an optional extra, as can a special wall/window kit. (See page 3). Exhaust Hose Kit Wall/Window Kit Wall Hanging Kit The hose can be fitted to the front of the dryer to allow exhaust air to be directed out of the room via a nearby window or other opening. Do not exceed a hose length of 2.4m. This specially designed kit allows for more permanent venting through hole cut in the wall or a window. It attaches to the hose described above. This allows the dryer to be mounted on a wall of suitable strength to take the weight. Alternatively it should be used when the dryer is stood on top of a washing machine or work surface to secure the dryer to the wall. 7

Using Your Tumble Dryer 1) Before Tumbling 2) What can be Tumbled Note: 3) Making up s PLEASE READ THE CAUTIONARY NOTES ON PAGE 4. It is very important to follow carefully each garment manufacturer s washing and drying instructions, as given on the Care Label attached to the garment. Do not overspin easy-care fabrics in your automatic washing machine or spin dryer. These fabrics dry quickly in a tumble dryer and many of them do not need ironing at all if they are dried in small loads. Fabric Conditioner added to the wash will give even more softness to all fabrics and is invaluable for controlling the static electricity which causes easy-care fabrics to cling and attract dirt. You may find the following symbols on care labels of recently manufactured garments: indicates article may be tumble dried indicates article must not be tumble dried. Never put dripping wet clothes in to the dryer. Large, very bulky items including duvets and sleeping bags should not be dried in a tumble dryer as it is essential that the load can tumble so that air can pass through it. Articles that contain safety pins, hair grips, metal fastenings or stiffening (e.g. bra wires) that may become detached should not be placed in laundry appliances. If they tumble free they could interfere with mechanical or electrical part of your washer or dryer. PLEASE READ CAUTIONARY NOTES ON PAGE 4 REGARDING FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES AND WOOL. Clothes should be sorted into similar fabrics before drying. Cotton which needs ironing can be dried to a suitable dampness. Towels and other cotton items which do not need ironing can be fully dried and these will be ready to wear or store as soon as they are taken from the dryer. Heavy fabrics should be dried separately from lightweight fabrics. Loose belts, apron strings etc. should be tied and zip fasteners fully closed before being placed in the dryer. Garments like jeans should be turned inside out to avoid damage to the drum by metal studs. Full/Maximum loads are:- Cottons Synthetics and Mixtures 3kg (6 1 /2 Ib) } 1kg (2 1 /4 lb) for minimum creasing 2kg (4 1 /2 lb) if creasing is unimportant 8

Using Your Tumble Dryer 4) Drying Times & Heat Settings: These will depend on the size of the load, the type of fabric and the wetness of the load. It is therefore not possible to give exact drying times but experience will quickly enable you to set the appropriate time for fully drying or damp drying to your requirements. As an approximate guide, the following table may assist you. COTTONS Drying times after rpm in washing machine High heat SYNTHETICS Drying times after reduced spin in washing machine SYNTHETICS Drying times after reduced spin in washing machine ACRYLICS Drying times after reduced spin in washing machine High heat Low/Gentle heat Low/Gentle heat Half Full Half Full Half Full Half Full 1 Kg Kg 3 Kg 1 Kg 2 Kg 1kg 2 Kg 1 Kg 2 Kg All times indicated are markings on fascia around the timer knob and include 10 minutes cool down period. 5) Cool Tumble Period Before the clothes stop tumbling the heater will automatically switch off and the clothes will continue to tumble for approximately 10 minutes in cool air. This cool tumble period is essential for all fabrics - to reduce the temperature of the load. It also reduces creasing. NEVER SWITCH THE DRYER OFF LEAVING A HOT LOAD IN THE DRUM. YOU MUST ALWAYS TERMINATE A PROGRAMME WITH COOL RUN. Switch off the electricity at the wall socket and remove the plug. 6) After Tumbling To avoid unnecessary creasing the garments should be removed from the dryer as soon as it stops. All clothes lose lint as they wear. When clothes are hung on a washing line the lint is blown away by the wind. In a tumble dryer it is collected in the lint filter. It is essential that the lint is removed from the filter every time the dryer is used. Failure to clean the filter will result in poor drying performance and may lead to mechanical or electrical breakdown. 9

Controls Timer Control Autodry & First Choice Models Timer Control Reversair, First Choice, Reverse Action Models & Two Way Action Models Heat Select Switch Filter Care Light (Available on some models) Energy Save System (Available on some models) Automatic Door Energy Save Select Cool Light (Available on some models) To operate the dryer, close the door and turn the timer control from the zero position in a clockwise direction slightly past the required drying time, then back to set the exact time. The timer can be set to any time up to 120 minutes and can be reset at any time as required to increase or reduce the time to dry. The time indicated on the timer includes approximately 10 minutes of tumble with the heat off. Note that the dryer must never be turned off leaving the clothes in the drum without first completing the heat off cool-down period. To operate the dryer, close the door and turn the timer control to the required time. The timer can be set to any time up to 120 minutes and can be reset at any time as required to increase or reduce the time to dry, but in doing so the timer knob must only be turned clockwise. Turning the timer backwards will cause damage and it must therefore be turned clockwise even to reach off position. The timer is electrically driven and will therefore only advance when there is power supplied to the dryer and the door is closed. The time indicated on the timer includes approximately 10 minutes of tumble with the heat off. Note that the dryer should never be turned off leaving the clothes in the drum without first completing the heat off cool-down period. Low / Gentle heat is obtained with the switch OUT and should be used to dry acrylics and acrylic mixtures (excluding wool mixtures). High heat is obtained by pressing the switch IN, and should be used to dry other materials (excluding wool and wool mixtures). For instructions concerning wool see page 4. Whenever the door is opened and there is power supplied to the machine, the light marked filter care will come on. This light advises the user to check that the filter is clear of fluff. It does not necessarily mean that the filter is blocked or that there is anything wrong with the machine. The light will go out when the door is closed. This dryer has an energy saving feature which reduces wastage of electricity when drying times are over-set. If High heat is selected a thermostat will reduce the heat input when the temperature in the drum reaches a predetermined level. The heater stays on reduced heat until the dryer enters the cool run period, thus saving energy if the timer has been over set. The dryer will stop when the door is opened and will restart when the door is closed, allowing items to be added to or taken from the machine without the need to reset the controls. When the load is dry, the select cool light is illuminated to advise you to advance the timer to cool tumble period. This avoids unnecessary wastage of electricity due to overdrying of the load. When the select cool light is on, the heat is reduced by half, to further reduce energy wastage. This facility only operates when high heat is selected. For loads of less than 1kg, the select cool light may operate before the load is dry. Check the dryness of the load before advancing to cool when drying small loads. 10

Care and Cleaning Cleaning the dryer (inside and outside): Important Cleaning the Filter: Lubrication After use switch off the electricity at the wall socket and remove the plug. Occasionally wipe inside the drum and outside the cabinet with a damp cloth. Never use abrasive or chemical cleaners which can damage plastics and paint work. Do not allow lint to collect around the dryer. It is essential that the lint is removed from the filter every time the dryer is used. Failure to do this will result in poor drying performance and may lead to mechanical or electrical breakdown. Occasionally wash the filter in tepid water and lightly use an old toothbrush to remove any lint present after normal cleaning. Ensure filter is completely dry before re-using. Your tumble dryer uses special bearing components. Lubrication by the user is not necessary and must not be attempted. Something Wrong with Your Dryer Before calling a service engineer check through the following list it could save a lot of time and trouble. Symptom It won t start It takes longer than normal to dry Any other problem Check Is the timer set? Is the door closed? Has the fuse in the plug or circuit blown? Are the wires in the plug properly secured? Is the filter clean? (See page 9) Is the drum overloaded? (See page 8) Is either the air inlet or outlet obstructed? Has the correct heat setting been selected? Have you re-read the instruction book? If you have been through the above and there is still a problem, call your nearest Service Office. Although the office may be some distance from you, the engineer may be local and prompt service will be arranged. Should the engineer find nothing is wrong with the Dryer a charge will have to be made for the service call. Note: Our Engineer will use every effort to avoid damage to floor coverings and adjacent units when carrying out repairs/service work but in locations where the Engineer advises you that it will be impossible to move the appliance without risk of damage, he will only proceed with your approval that no liability is accepted. 11
