4 1 INTRODUCTION Read this User s manual carefully before operating the instrument. 1.1 Unpacking the equipment The Aerosol Inlet Dryer package includes: Aerosol Inlet Dryer with 2 wall-mount brackets (AEDN /AEDN ) Black conductive sample line tubing (M4997) USB type power supply (AEDN (EU)/AEDN (US)) USB supply cord (M5395) Serial communication cable (TM P SER) User s manual Photo all components labeled to be added. 5 1.2 Intended use and description of the instrument Drying an aerosol sample stream is necessary in locations where the ambient air has high Relative Humidity. This improves the accuracy and reproducibility of the scientific measurement, and protects the measuring equipment from water condensation. If an ambient air stream of high dewpoint (condensation temperature) is brought into an equipment room which is chilled by air-conditioning, water can condense in the sample tubing and also in any measuring instruments. This condensation of water will completely invalidate the accuracy of the aerosol measurement, and will usually also cause serious damage to the measuring instruments. This problem can be eliminated by removing the water vapor from the sample stream using a Nafion membrane based drier. The Magee Scientific aerosol inlet stream dryer uses this technology to reduce the dewpoint of an air stream by up to 14 C at a flow rate of 5 LPM. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recommends that all aerosol measurements should to made at a Relative Humidity below 40 % for best accuracy (WMO/GAW 2003). The Magee Scientific aerosol stream dryer operates using a Nafion membrane to remove water vapor from the sample stream by permeation to an outer space maintained at a low absolute pressure by means of a vacuum pump which is provided. The Nafion membrane is selective for water vapor and this process does not affect any of the aerosol particles physical properties. 8 1.4 Dryer performance Humidity is defined by the dew point temperature or the combination of relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T). The dewpoint temperature can be approximated using the following equation: T dp = T + ( T) ln(rh 100) ( T) ln(rh 100) where T is the temperature in K and RH is the relative humidity reported in %. The dryer performance depends on the RH of the inlet air. The reduction in dew point temperature is shown in Figure 1. 11 Electric shock Use ONLY the USB power supply adapter and USB supply cord (AEDN (EU)/AEDN (US) ) specified by the manufacturer and supplied with the equipment (see below). CHECK the USB power supply and the USB supply cord ANNUALLY. If either is DAMAGED, stop using the equipment and contact your authorized representative. 12 USB supply cord Use a shielded USB supply cord (M5395) with A and B connectors, maximum length 3 m, with EMC ferrites on both sides. Fire and explosion NEVER install the instrument in explosion-risk areas and never use the equipment near flammable substances. Instrument overheating ALWAYS assure the instrument operates under proper operating ambient conditions. NEVER install the instrument in spaces with limited air circulation. Instrument service and repair UNAUTHORIZED service or repair procedures WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. The equipment can only be serviced, repaired or modified by authorized personnel. Please contact your authorized representative if you encounter any problem with the equipment. Please make sure to have the equipment checked regularly for technical safety. 13 3 INSTALLATION 3.1 Wall-mounting Mount the Aerosol Inlet Dryer on a wall or other support framework using the two brackets (AEDN /AEDN ) which are included in the package. Use appropriate screws and/or inserts for solid walls, gypsum-board walls, or metal framing. The dryer may be mounted horizontally or vertically, but the display should be easily readable. 14 3.2 Chassis grounding Connect the chassis to the nearest available protective grounding point ( earth ) as shown below. This is required for EMC immunity and electrostatic protection. Always use green/yellow cable with a minimum gauge of 1,5mm 2 (15 AWG) for the grounding connection. 15 3.3 Air tubing connection The equipment is supplied with several meters of black conductive sample line tubing (M4997) designed to minimize electrostatic particle losses in the sampling system. Keep the sampling line as short as possible. Never use tubing made from non-conductive material. Connect the tubing as shown below. 17 When installing the sample line, avoid sharp bends or long horizontal runs with the sample tubing as either of these conditions can promote particle losses in the sample tube. The dryer should be mounted as close as possible to the point where the inlet tube enters the monitoring station to avoid water condensation in the inlet tube. The aerosol sample inlet in the ambient air should be made in such a way so avoid all possibility of entry of water (rain, spray, etc.) into the inlet. 18 3.4 Vacuum pump connection The dryer performance is controlled by the pressure difference created by the external vacuum pump. The optimum pressure is -700 mbar. Adjust the vacuum by rotating the VACUUM ADJUSTMENT screw and by observing the value on the VACUUM METER. Side view: Vacuum meter controller User's manual Version 1.5 December /30

19 3.5 AC/DC power supply connection and RS232 interface The humidity measurements on the inlet and outlet of the dryer are reported on the LCD screen. The dyer should be connected to the 5 VDC power supply through a USB cable. Connect the AC/DC power supply with the USB cable from the USB A in-case output connector on the power supply, to the USB B connector on the instrument. The Aerosol Inlet Dryer can be connected to a PC or data logger via the RS-232 COM port. The dryer data (relative humidity and temperature) are streamed over the RS232 interface. 20 4 USER INTERFACE, SETTINGS and OPERATION 4.1 User interface DISPLAY The user interface is composed of a simple 4 line dot matrix display which shows the Relative Humidity RH in %, the Temperature T in C and the Dewpoint in C of the air on the Inlet and Outlet side of the dryer. 21 STATUS LED The Dryer operation status is shown by a 3-color LED indicator. Optimal conditions are shown by a GREEN color, signifying that the difference between inlet and outlet dewpoint is greater than 10 C. Adequate conditions are shown by a YELLOW color, indicating a dewpoint reduction between 5 and 10 C. If the display color is RED, the difference between inlet and outlet dewpoint is less than 5 C and there may be a functional problem with the dryer hardware or its installation. Green dtdp > 10 C Yellow dtdp > 5 C Red dtdp < 5 C 4.2 Connecting to AE33 Aethalometer Connect the Dryer with a standard serial cable to one of the COM ports on the back of the AE33. In the AE33 s screen commands Operation/Advanced/External devices, select the option Aerosol inlet dryer for the appropriate COM port. 4.3 Connecting to External Datalogger or PC Connect a standard (male/female, NOT null-modem ) RS232 cable between a PC or external data logger and the Aerosol Inlet Dryer. 22 Sample Purge Dryer Purge Dryer Aerosol Inlet Dryer 4.4 Dual dryer installation For greater efficiency under extreme conditions, it is possible to operate two dryers in series as shown below. This configuration will meet World Meteorological Organization/Global Atmosphere Watch guidelines for aerosol sampling and analysis in tropical environments. For sample air at 35 C with RH=100 % we obtain relative humidity of 40 % at 22 C after 2 stage drying. 23 5 MAINTENANCE The Aerosol Inlet Dryer should be maintained regularly. We recommend the following schedule for regular maintenance, which can be performed by skilled user. 24 5.1 Dryer membrane tube replacement If status indication LED in the front plane of the dryer permanently turns RED, the difference between inlet and outlet dew point is less than 5 C and there may be a functional problem with the dryer hardware or its installation. In case of option 1 (functional problem) most probably: - Nafion membrane tube is worn out, or - Nafion membrane was flooded and automatically became damaged. If the membrane was flooded, the dryer can no longer be user and needs immediate replacement. If the membrane is worn out, user should schedule the replacement in short time period. Replacement procedure is easy and can be done on site by technician with basic technical skills. Complete replacement program is described in great detail below.
