8 1.1 INTRODUCTION 1. SAFETY 1. UNPACKING A. TEMPTEK TD Series Material Dryer is a continuous-duty, desiccant dryer designed to supply an uninterrupted flow of constant, low dew point air. The unit is completely automatic and requires very little maintenance to offer many years of trouble free service. A. It is important to become thoroughly familiar with this manual and the operating characteristics of the TD SERIES material dryer. B. It is the owner s responsibility to assure proper operator training, installation, operation, and maintenance of the TD SERIES material dryer. C. Observe all warning and safety placards applied to the chiller. Failure to observe all warnings can result in serious injury or death to the operator and severe mechanical damage to the unit. A. Caution should be exercised to see that the equipment is not handled roughly. The crate must be removed carefully. The machine must not be used to pry against when removing the crate. B. The dryer is usually shipped completely assembled and require no further assembly prior to installation. Do not tilt the dessicant section at an angle greater than 0 during unpacking of installation because the desiccant may get into the valve assembly. 1.4 GENERAL INSPECTION A. When the unit is unpacked, make a visual inspection looking for missing parts or damage which may have occurred during shipment. B. Some parts, such as thermometers, hoses, and hose clamps are packed inside the hopper. All electrical and mechanical connections should be checked for tightness because vibration during transit may cause them to loosen. C. The inside of the hopper and the perforated spreader cone or diffuser tube should be thoroughly cleaned to remove all dust and oil that may have accumulated during shipment to your plant. 1.5 MATERIAL SAFETY SUMMARY A. 10 components are typically (i) mercury switch and/or (ii) mercury relay switches. These devices are listed as ARTICLES and as such are exempt from the COMMUNITY RIGHT TO KNOW per Title III. B. Shipping requirements according th IATA (International Air Transport Authority) regulation 805 indicate that mercury switches and relays are exempt from the requirements of IATA regulation 805 providing they are of the totally enclosed leak-proof type in sealed metal or plastic units. All devices used by TEMPTEK meet these requirements, and as such require no special packing. C. Check the parts lists included with this instruction manual for the presence of devices containing mercury that may have supplied with your equipment from TEMPTEK. Material Safety Data sheets for these devices and other special precaution have been provided in this manual. 13 .1 TD SERIES INSTALLATION A. Mount the TD Dryer and hopper combination (if purchased) to the processing machine, using an adapter if necessary. Secure with bracing as required to stabilize the unit. Convenient lugs are located at the end and on the valve box for this purpose. Others may be used if necessary. B. Connect the required electrical power to the unit as indicated on the Temptek nameplate, which is located on the face of the control box. C. If an optional hopper, dryer, or combination hopper/dryer stand has been supplied by TEMPTEK, it should securely bolted to the floor for a safe installation. then connect the hoses, thermocouple, etc., as described under the appropriate sections in this manual.. DIFFUSER CONE OR DIFFUSER TUBE INSTALLATION A. After the hopper has been installed and secured, the perforated diffuser cone or diffuser tube should be installed in the hopper. The cone rests on a flange inside the hipper hear the bottom of the straight side (just below the clean out door if applicable) where it joins the outer hopper cone. This cone maybe installed either thru the clean out door (if supplied) or by removing the hopper lid. Be certain the diffuser cone is seated firmly to the flange inside the hopper. B. The diffuser tube is installed by pressing it in to the hopper inlet tube from inside the hopper. Either a perforated diffuser cone or diffuser tube (not both) is supplied depending on the size and design of the hopper.. UTILITY CONNECTION A. Connect the proper supply through a main line disconnect switch (field supplied) to the terminal block marked L1 - L - L and ground in the control cabinet. B. The correct power supply requirements can be found on the specifications sheet or on the nameplate attached to the dryer. C. Local or national electrical codes should be followed as required. This is the only power supply necessary as the dryer is completely pre-wired and supplied with a control voltage transformer to supply 115 volts to the control circuit (if applicable)..1 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION 55 East Stop 18 Road Greenwood, Indiana Fax: Page: 1

16 A. The TD Series Dryer was designed to be a simple, compact and easy to use dryer that could be used for drying of plastics in cases where the throughput is 5 lbs./hr or less. B. The reduction of moisture is accomplished by the use of an adsorbent material called Molecular Sieves. The blower draws humid air from the drying hopper across the filter by the blower assembly and then it is directed through the valve assembly and into one of the desiccant beds. Moisture is adsorbed by the desiccant and the dry, low dewpoint, extremely dry air is blown across the process heater, heated to the desired temperature, discharged from the dryer and ducted to the drying hopper. The dry air enters, and is forced through, the hopper. The warm, low dew point air fills the hopper, placing all of the entering material in a moisture free environment. This causes the moisture in the plastic material to migrate to the surface where it is picked up by the dry air. The humid air is taken back to the dryer where the moisture is absorbed by the desiccant. Before the bed adsorption reaches the saturation point, the -way valve automatically reverses and transfers the humid air flow to the opposite bed. C. While one bed is on adsorption, the opposite bed is on regeneration. During regeneration, a portion of the air flow is diverted through the second desiccant bed instead of travelling through the process heater. The air passes through the regeneration heater and desiccant bed. The desiccant is heated to the temperature required to desorb the water adsorbed by the desiccant during the preceding drying period. Water vapor carried from the bed by the air is discharged to the ambient through the regeneration outlet port. At the end of the regeneration heating cycle, the regeneration heater is shut down but the dry purge air continues to flow. This helps to carry some of the excess heat of regeneration away from the desiccant bed, allowing it to cool in preparation for the adsorption cycle. D. At the end of the timed 4 hour period, a simple shift of the solenoid valve causes the diverter valves to change position. The freshly regenerated bed now begins adsorbing moisture and the other bed is regenerated. Just one blower (the process blower) is required for both the process and regeneration functions and it runs continuously when the dryer is on. Adsorption and regeneration alternative automatically between the two beds in a continuous cycle.. INITIAL START-UP PROCEDURE A. Fill the hopper completely with material and turn the temperature controller to 0 F. Push the on/off switch to the on position and check the blower for proper rotation by observing the rotation of the motor at the end facing the control box. 17 indicated by an arrow on the blower housing. B. Allow the unit to dry-cyle for 4 hours with the hopper filled with material before operating. This will allow the moisture adsorbed by the desiccant during transit or inactivity to be discharged. Failure to dry cycle the unit may cause drying problems with the material. NOTE: It is necessary to have material in the hopper in order for the regeneration cycle to function properly.. OPERATING PROCEDURE 4.1 OVERVIEW A. After the initial start-up period, adjust the temperature controller to the drying temperature necessary for the material to be dried. Dry the plastic pellets for the required residence period, which is generally two to six hours depending on the material. B. After the residence period is complete, the material is dry and ready for processing. As dry material is withdrawn from the bottom, wet material should be added to the hopper at the same rate. (Note: it is extremely important to keep the hopper as full as possible for proper drying.) 55 East Stop 18 Road Greenwood, Indiana Fax: Page: 17

18 .4 TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER PV (green): Displays the Process Value. During setup this displays the parameter to be programmed. SET: Used to change the set value (SV). During setup this scrolls, selects and confirms control settings and security modes. OUT (green): Lights when the control output is on. SV (orange): Displays the Set Value. during setup this displays the parameter value. ALM1 and ALM (red): Lights when the alarm output(s) are on. Two separate alarm functions. TEMPTEK only uses ALM1. AT (green): flashes during autotuning. LEFT ARROW: Controls cursor movement for selecting digits in the SV display. UP and DOWN ARROWS: Value selection. 20 A. Most drying problems are the result of dirty filter(s), air leaks, desiccant contamination and malfunctioning regeneration heaters. It is seldom that other components fail. 4. MACHINE WILL NOT START PROBLEM: Machine will not start. SOLUTIONS: 1. POWER SUPPLY. a. No voltage or the voltage is incorrect. Check the field installed disconnect and incoming power supply.. TRANSFORMER. a. No voltage on primary. Check the field installed disconnect and incoming power supply. b. No voltage on secondary.check fuse, if ok replace the transformer.. STOP/START SWITCH. a. No voltage through the switch. Replace the switch. 4. INADEQUATE OR NO REGENERATION HEAT PROBLEM: Inadequate or No Regeneration Heat SOLUTIONS: 1. CAM TIMER. Voltage to timer motor but time doesn t rotate. a. Check for a cam switch malfunction and replace timer. b. Check for incorrect cam setting and adjust.. HEATER AMPERAGE READING. See Engineering Data sheet. a. If voltage is correct, replace heater. b. If voltage is incorrect, supply correctly rated voltage.. VALVE SOLENOID. a. Check for voltage at solenoid. If none is present, check the cam timer. If there is voltage to timer motor but time doesn t rotate, replace the timer, or check for incorrect cam setting and adjust. b. If there is voltage at the solenoid and the valve moves freely by hand, replace the valve solenoid. 4. FILTER. a. Filter is dirty. Dry cycle for 4 hours. 8. DEWPOINT METER. a. Not operating properly. Repair or replace meter. b. Reverse flow through meter. Make sure of positive pressure at the dewpoint sample port. 4.7 CHANGEOVER TEMPERATURE TOO HIGH PROBLEM: Changeover Temperature too high SOLUTIONS: 1. CAM TIMER. Voltage to timer motor but time doesn t rotate. a. Check for a cam switch malfunction and replace timer. b. Check for incorrect cam setting and adjust.. FILTER. a. Filter is dirty. Replace element.. 23 4.8 MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION SCHEDULE A. It is recommended that maintenance and inspection be done on a scheduled basis. Maintenance requirements will naturally vary widely for each installation and specific operating conditions. It is suggested that a complete inspection be performed with necessary maintenance at the end of the first month, the first three months and the first six months. These inspections will be indicative of how often future maintenance will be necessary. B. EVERY MONTH. 1. Inspect air filters. Clean or replace as required. Replace if cartridge is broken. The time interval for inspection should be shortened if experience indicates as required.. Check system for air leaks or flow obstructions and correct as required. C. EVERY MONTHS. 1. Check heater amperage (see Specification sheet).. Check motor amperage (see Specification sheet).. Check all electrical connections to make sure that they have not become loose, especially those connections at contractors, motor starters, and heater elements. D. ONCE EVERY YEAR. 1. Check solenoid valve operation and operation of valve. E. EVERY YEARS OR AS NEEDED. 1. Remove top cover of dryer and replace desiccant. Use high temperature silicon caulking to reseal the cover.
