Figure 1: Installation Dimensions
Page 5 Installation Steps CAUTION: Before beginning the installation, make sure that all affected water lines have been turned off. 1. Select a place for the Vac-U-Station to be installed, preferably an area isolated from patient contact and treatment. Refer to figure 1 for typical dimensions used and the required wall footprint. 2. If not already in place, a Watts Double Check reduced pressure backflow preventer must be installed on the water supply line to the Vac-U-Station. 3. Mount the Vac-U-Station so that the top surface of the casting is approximately 43 from the floor. Pilot holes should be drilled into weight bearing studs. See figure 1 for mounting requirements for the Vac-U-Station. NOTE: In some installations, it is beneficial to first install stringers or a backboard onto which the Vac-U-Station may then be mounted. Ensure the handle and top clamp have enough room to move through their full ranges of motion. 4. Bolt the Vac-U-Station into place using screws or bolts capable of supporting a 75 lb. static load. 5. Connect the 3/8" NPT water intake port of the Vac-U-Station to the appropriate facility water line. 6. Connect the sanitary waste line to the 2 female PVC pipe fitting on the Vac-U-Station. A cleanout trap should be installed between the Vac-U-Station and sanitary waste line. 7. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. 8. Turn the manual handle of the Vac-U-Station to the "On position and check the connections to the Vac-U-Station for leaks.
Page 6 Directions For Use 1. Disconnect the Bemis Vac-U-Port canister from its circuits. Remove connecting tubing from Vac-U-Port Canister. THIS TUBING MAY CONTAIN RESIDUAL FLUID. FOLLOW HOSPITAL POLICY FOR DISPOSAL OF CONTAMINATED ITEMS. Transport to the Vac-U-Station per hospital policy. 2. Place Bemis Vac-U-Port canister in receptacle of Vac-U-Station. Align the arrow on the front of the Bemis Vac-U-Port canister with the arrow on the front of the receptacle. Canister should fit snugly in holder. Open any port except the vacuum port. 3. Place clamp head over canister cover. Adjust the height of the clamp head by pulling out the pin on the side and raise it up or down until it is just above the canister cover. Then, turn the clamp head until it is over the canister cover. 4. Drain canister. Rotate the handle on the right side of the unit toward the front of the machine approximately 115 degrees. As the handle is turned, the clamp head will come down holding the canister in place. The canister will be opened on the bottom and will begin to drain. 5. Return handle to original position. Once the canister has been emptied, return the handle back to the vertical or OFF position. This will release the clamp and start draining the fluid from the machine into the sanitary sewer system. A spray hose is included to rinse canister before removal if desired. 6. Remove canister. Push the clamp head out of the way so that the canister can be lifted up out of the machine. Recap the open port. Then, tip the canister slightly toward you as you remove it. Dispose of canister according to hospital policy. 7. Check reservoir. After draining canisters, look through the translucent plastic in the middle of the machine where the drained fluid was collected. If the reservoir is dirty, turn the handle as if to drain a canister. This will activate spray hoses inside of the reservoir to rinse it out. Let run until the reservoir is clean.
Page 7 Features Figure 2: Vac-U-Station Profile Clamp Rod Clamping Head Top Casting Reservoir Clamping System The clamping system is used to hold the Vac-U-Port Suction Canister in place during draining. The clamp head is allowed to swivel on the clamp rod so that it may be put above the suction canister cover and then removed. The clamping system is connected to the handle by a series of linkages. This allows the rotation of the handle to activate the clamping system with one motion. (figure 2)
Page 8 Reservoir The reservoir is the large translucent piece of PVC pipe in the middle of the Vac-U-Station (figure 2). It is left visible during normal use of the Vac-U-Station so that users can see when it needs to be cleaned. The reservoir collects all the infectious fluid from the drained suction canister and the water from the multiple spray heads until the handle is turned off. At that point the bottom of the reservoir will open and all the fluid will drain into the sanitary sewer system. Casting The top casting is used to hold and contain the Vac-U-Port Suction Canister during draining (figure 2). There are two holes in its well (figure 3). In the smaller hole the breakout pipe will move up and down. The fluid from the canister will also be drained down this hole. The second larger hole serves as an emergency drain hole and leads directly to the reservoir. There are also two gaskets in the well of the casting (figure 3). The larger lip seal gasket serves as an airtight seal around the outside of the Vac-U-Port canister. The smaller seal serves as a seal around the breakout port of the canister to keep the drained fluid going down the breakout pipe only. Figure 3: Vac-U-Station Casting Port Seal Gasket Lip Seal Gasket Breakout Port Emergency Drain
Page 9 Solenoid Valve The solenoid valve turns the water to the system on and off. It is activated by the rotation of the handle, which rotates a cam that will in turn push a button on the solenoid valve (figure 4). Venturri The venturri uses the incoming water to create a vacuum. This vacuum is transferred to the reservoir through the vacuum tubing and barbed nipple (figure 4). Figure 4: Venturri and Solenoid Valve Solenoid Valve Venturri Vacuum Tubing Vacuum Hose Barbed Nipple
Page 10 Drainpipe Assembly The breakout pipe is the top portion of this assembly. It is driven by a spur gear connected to the handle to pierce a hole into the bottom of a Vac-U-Port canister that is to be drained. Once the port in the canister is opened, the fluid will drain through the breakout pipe, through the drainpipe and into the reservoir. At the bottom of this assembly there is a piston that seals the bottom of the reservoir when the handle is turned to the ON position. When the handle is turned to the OFF position, the entire assembly lowers allowing the reservoir to drain. Figure 5: Drainpipe Assembly Breakout Pipe Breakout Pipe Assembly Pipe Block Clamp Piston Piston O-Ring
Page 11 Spray Heads There are three spray heads located inside of the reservoir (figure 6). These spray heads serve three purposes in the Vac-U-Station. First, they will dilute any fluid drained into the reservoir. Second, they help to knock down and reduce any foam that may develop during the draining of a suction canister. Third, they serve as a method of cleaning the inside of the reservoir. Figure 6: Spray Head Bushings Spray Head Bushings
Page 12 Maintenance for Vac-U-Station Drainage System The Vac-U-Station Drainage System was designed with ease of use as well as ease of maintenance in mind. We have broken up the following maintenance issues into things that should be checked or done daily and those that need to be addressed every 6 months. NOTE: Anytime work is done on the Vac-U-Station, proper protective apparel should be worn. Enzymatic cleaners and disinfectants are required for maintenance. Below is a list of recommended brands for use with Vac-U-Station. ph neutral enzymatic cleaners for daily maintenance Manufacturer Ecolab Ruhof Certol International Henry Schein Hu-Friedy Johnson & Johnson Metrex Pascal Company Brand Name Asepti-zyme Endozime, EndozimeAW, and Orthozime ProEZ MaxiZyme Enzymax Enzol Enzymatic Detergent EmPower Citrizyme
Page 13 Daily Maintenance Requirements Visual Checks These checks should be done daily to keep the Vac-U-Station in top working order: Inspect the large lip seal (Refer to figure 3 for large lip seal location) ~ If seal is visibly worn, kinked or damaged it should be replaced. ~ If seal has been pulled out of its groove in the casting, the groove should be cleaned out first. Then the seal can be lubricated once again with lithium grease and then reseated. Be sure that the seal is positioned in the groove like a V, with the open side up. Inspect the small port seal (Refer to figure 3 for small port seal location) ~ If seal is visibly worn, kinked or damaged it should be replaced. ~ If seal has been pulled out of its groove in the casting, the groove should be cleaned out first. Then the seal can be lubricated once again with lithium grease and then reseated. Inspect the fluid reservoir (Refer to figure 2 for reservoir location) ~ If the interior of the translucent plastic reservoir seems dirty or coated with blood, rotate the Vac-U-Station handle forward, which will activate the water sprayers inside the reservoir. This should rinse of the walls of the reservoir. Daily Cleaning A ph neutral enzymatic cleaner should be used on the unit at least once a day. ~ Mix enzymatic cleaner with cold water in a 3000cc canister according to enzymatic cleaner directions. ~ Drain canister on Vac-U-Station. Leave Vac-U-Station on until entire reservoir has filled with water. ~ Once reservoir has filled with water, turn the Vac-U-Station off, remove the canister, and dispose. Pour water into top of casting and wipe down unit to remove any standing blood or other chemicals that are on the surface of the unit. Weekly Maintenance Requirements This may need to be done more often depending on the number of canisters emptied. If a foul order comes from the Vac-U-Station, increase the frequency of this disinfection procedure. Weekly Disinfecting ~ Mix a neutral ph disinfectant in a 3000cc canister according to the disinfectant s directions. If 3000cc canister not available, use two 2000cc s. ~ Drain canister on Vac-U-Station. Leave Vac-U-Station on until entire reservoir has filled with water. ~ Once reservoir has filled with water, turn the Vac-U-Station off, remove the canister, and dispose.
Page 14 Six- Month Maintenance Requirements Every six months it is recommended that the o-rings, seals and tubing on the Vac-U-Station be examined for wear or damage. Lip Seal Remove current lip seal from casting and dispose of. Clean out groove that the seal had set in so there is no liquid or foreign objects in it. Coat the interior of the groove with lithium grease and put the new seal into the groove. The x-section of the seal is shaped like a V. When the seal is installed, the open side of the V should be facing up. Small Port Seal Remove current small port seal from casting and dispose of. Clean out groove that the seal had set in so there is no liquid or foreign objects in it. Coat the interior of the groove with lithium grease and put the new seal into the groove. Piston O-ring To test whether the o-ring is still functioning, do the following: Turn the handle on the side of the Vac-U-Station to the fully ON position. Wait until water has filled at least the bottom 2 of the clear reservoir. Watch through the side of the clear reservoir for air bubbles to rise from the outer diameter of the piston on the bottom of the reservoir. If bubbles stream up from that area, the piston o-ring needs to be replaced. Replacing The Piston O-Ring: To remove the piston o-ring follow the instructions in Appendix A for the removal of the lower drain assembly. Once the lower drain assembly has been removed, the piston and piston o-ring should be visible below the reservoir. Remove the old o-ring (Appendix A, Figure 1, Item 4). Take a dry cloth and clean the o-ring groove. Coat the replacement o- ring (Buna-N, Size 325) with lithium grease and then install it back into the o-ring groove. The Vac-U-Station can now be reassembled.
Page 15 Drainpipe and Breakout Pipe O-Rings To test whether these o-rings are still functioning, do the following: Drainpipe O-Ring ~ Remove the top stainless steel shroud and set it aside. ~ Put a Vac-U-Port suction canister and cover onto the Vac-U-Station as if to be drained. Make sure that all the ports on the cover are capped. ~ Turn the handle on the side of the Vac-U-Station to the fully ON position. ~ Sprinkle some water on the o-ring retainer where the drainpipe passes through. ~ Wait approximately one minute. A vacuum will form in the reservoir. If the o-ring is worn and leaky, the water will be sucked into the reservoir. Figure 7: Drainpipe O-ring Testing Sprinkle Water Here to Test Drainpipe O-ring
Page 16 Breakout Pipe O-Ring ~ Remove the top stainless steel shroud and set it aside. ~ Turn the handle on the side of the Vac-U-Station to the fully ON position. ~ Pour at least 3000cc of water into the well of the Vac-U-Station, making sure that enough water is put in so that both drain holes are covered. ~ Pour this water in several times. Then look at the breakout pipe underneath the casting. If there is any evidence of fluid on the outside of the breakout pipe, the breakout pipe o- ring will need to be replaced. Figure 8: Breakout Pipe O-Ring Testing Watch here for any leakage past breakout pipe o-ring. Replacing the Drainpipe O-Ring and/or the Breakout Pipe O-Ring: To replace the drainpipe or breakout pipe o-rings do the following: Follow Appendix A for the removal of the lower drain assembly. Follow Appendix B for the removal of the drainpipe assembly and changing of o- rings.
Page 17 Spray Head Assemblies To examine the spray head assemblies do the following: Remove the top stainless steel shroud and set it aside. Examine all of the clear 1/4 PVC tubing that sits below the top casting. If any of it has become stiff or looks damaged it should be replaced. Turn the handle on the side of the Vac-U-Station to the fully ON position. Now look at the spray patterns on the walls of the reservoir created by the spray heads. The water should spray around the total interior circumference of the reservoir. If there are whole sides of the reservoir that are not being sprayed with water, one of the spray heads is not functioning and should be examined for blockages. To clean out or replace any of the spray heads: Remove the top stainless steel shroud and set it aside. Turn the water to the Vac-U-Station off. Remove the bolt next to the spray head that needs to be replaced. Pull spray head bushing straight up until it is free. Remove brass spray nozzle from bottom of bushing and clean or replace as needed. Figure 9: Spray Head Bushings Spray Head Bushings Lubrication All of the moving parts under the casting should be coated with a lithium grease during every six month maintenance checkup. These parts are to include the spur gear, gear rack, wear pin, clevis pins, drainpipe, breakout pipe and clamp rod.
Page 18 Trouble Shooting What do I do if the Vac-U-Port Suction Canisters are draining slowly? Check to make sure that there is water turned on to the Vac-U-Station. Check for any blockages in the drainpipe. Use a flashlight or a snake of some kind to make sure that the drainpipe is clear. The drainpipe is straight without any bends. The drainage opening on the side of the pipe should be able to be seen through the translucent wall of the reservoir. Check to see if there are any clots blocking the port of the suction canister. These may be moved by using the spray hose provided. Check to see if the venturri has become clogged. Do this by first removing the top shroud. Then remove the braided PVC hose that is connected to the venturri. Then remove the four bolts that hold the plastic nipple to the venturri body. Once this is removed look inside to see if there is any debris that has accumulated. If so, remove it. Check to see if the vacuum hose that goes from the venturri to the reservoir has become clogged. Check to see if there are any leaks at any of the seal locations. Follow the directions shown in the 6-month check-up for this. Figure 10: Venturri And Vacuum Hose Venturri Venturri Plastic Nipple Vacuum Hose What do I do if the Vac-U-Port Suction Canister started to drain and then stopped? Check to make sure at least one port on top of the cover is open. Use the spray hose to try and remove any clots in the canister that may be blocking the drainage port.
