4 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY WEATHERIZATION PRIORITY LIST 1. Air Sealing and General Heat/Cooling Waste seal openings to prevent waste. Addresses air-infiltration: weatherstripping, caulking, thresholds. Including other required measures such as Water Heater Tank Wrap, Water Pipe Insulation, Faucet Aerators, Low Flow Shower Heads, HVAC Filters. 2. Attic Insulation installation of insulation (to improve to minimum R-30) 3. Dense-Pack Sidewall insulation installation of insulation 4. Solar Window Screens installation of solar window screen 5. Installation of Smart Thermostat for central heating and cooling systems 6. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) replace incandescent bulbs with CFL s 7. Seal and Insulate Ducts seal central heating and cooling system duct work 8. Refrigerator replace inefficient refrigerators 9. Addressing heating/cooling system repair, upgrade and or replace inefficient systems 10. Hot Water Heater replace inefficient hot water heaters

6 WATER SAVINGS To reduce water consumption in the bathroom by up to 50%: Upgrade: Install an aerator on the faucet, rated to 1.5 GPM or less Install a Low Flow Showerhead, rated to 2.5 GPM or less When replacing a toilet, upgrade to Energy Star rated dual flush, 1.6 GPF GPM = Gallons per minute Total cost: $ 134 Annual Savings: $ 80* Cost: $ 4.00 $ $ upgrade GPF = Gallons per flush *Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

7 MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS SEALED Have contractor inspect and seal AC ducts whenever new ducts are not being installed. Improperly sealed ducts and connections can result in up to 20% air loss Inspect all windows that are not being replaced to determine if they need to have new caulk applied Inspect weatherstrip around all entry doors for replacement need Insulate electric outlets and switch plates Insulate the back of the attic access panel and weatherstrip the opening

8 INCREASING EFFICIENCY OF WINDOWS Option: Replace window with impact window, tinted, SHGC.27 or less Replace window with standard window, tinted, SHGC.26 or less Cost per window: $ $ Install solar screens on each window $ Install window tint with a maximum FHGC rating of.45 $ Caulk around existing windows $ SHGC, or the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, measures how well a window blocks heat from the sun. The lower the number, the more efficient the window.

11 AIR CONDITIONING Install a programmable Smart Thermostat on any system Lowers heating/cooling bills by up to 10% and costs under $ 50 Relocate air handlers from attic to conditioned space on the main floor where possible. Air handlers draw CFM of air from their surroundings via leakage from the cabinet. Upgrade from code required SEER 13 HVAC to a more energy efficient level. SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio which indicates the relative amount of energy needed to provide a specific cooling output Upgrade to: Upgrade Cost*: (2.5 ton system) SEER 14 $ 400 $ 40 SEER 15 $ 800 $ 90 SEER 16 $ 1,200 $ 120 Annual Savings (from FPL) *Upgrade cost varies by manufacturer and installer, but averages $ per SEER

12 ATTIC INSULATION Insulate Attic to R-38: $.76 per square foot $ 912 for a 1200 SF home A properly insulated home can reduce heating and cooling costs by 20% and overall energy usage by 10%

14 CHOOSING PAINT FOR ITS GREEN VALUE Light Reflectance Value (LRV) represents the percent of light reflected off a surface Dark colors absorb light and make a home hotter - LRV of 0 (Black) absorbs all light Light colors reflect light and keep a home cooler - LRV of 100 (White) reflects all light Paint colors with an LRV value of 50% or higher are recommended to reduce energy costs Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are present in some paints. These are unstable, carbon-containing compounds which can affect air quality and pose health risks Choose low or zero VOC paint to reduce these risks

15 LANDSCAPING Shade the walls and windows of the house to reduce solar heat gain, especially on the south side. A 6-8 foot deciduous tree planted near the home will begin shading windows the first year and shade the roof in 5 10 years. Slow growing trees often have deeper roots and stronger branches and are less prone to breakage during a windstorm. Shade on the A/C compressor will help it work easier Use drought tolerant plants to reduce irrigation requirements 3 Oak Trees planted on south side, cost $ 400 each

16 CASE STUDY Duplex in Stuart, FL CBS Construction built in 2004 Each side is 1,131 SF of living area Last full year of occupancy, unit used 13,960 kwh annually Remodeled with NSP funds, including: Increase attic insulation from R19 to R38 New energy efficient windows with tinting Solar hot water heater All new Energy Star rated appliances and ceiling fans Light reflective paint both inside and out Current annual energy usage: 9,288 kwh 44% less Annual savings based on current FPL pricing: $ 606
