3 Important Safety Information Please read these instructions thoroughly and retain for future use. All products manufactured and supplied by Bristan are safe provided they are installed correctly, used correctly and receive regular maintenance in accordance with these instructions. If you are in any doubt about your ability to install this thermostatic mixer valve safely you must employ the services of an experienced plumber. These fittings need to be installed in accordance with and meet the requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and Scottish Byelaws Warning: Do not operate the thermostatic mixer valve if you suspect it is frozen. Do not site the mixer valve where it might be subjected to freezing conditions. Remove all packaging and check the contents for damage before starting installation. Before starting any installation please consider the following: before drilling into walls, check that there are no hidden electrical wires, cables or water supply pipes. This can be checked with the aid of an electronic detector. If power tools are used do not forget to; - Wear eye protection - Unplug equipment after use Fitting Isolating valves to the inlet feeds is required for ease of maintenance. Warning: Before installing the thermostatic mixer valve it is essential that you thoroughly flush through the pipework in order to remove any remaining swarf, solder, etc. Failure to carry out this procedure could cause problems or damage to the workings of the mixer valve. It is recommended that when installing the thermostatic mixer valve, full access is provided for servicing purposes. This mixer valve must not be modified in any way as this will invalidate the guarantee. 03

Note: The inlet hot water temperature must be at least 10ºC above the required blend temperature (e.g. outlet temperature 43ºC: Minimum hot supply 53ºC). Nominally equal (balanced) inlet supply pressures are recommended for optimum performance. BS 6700 recommends the temperature of stored water should never exceed 65 C. A stored water temperature of 60 C is considered sufficient to meet all nominal requirements and will minimise the build up of lime scale in hard water areas. Identify all components are present prior to installation. 2. This mixer valve should be installed in compliance with Water Regulations. For further details contact you Local Water Authority. 3. This mixer valve is suitable for use with the following systems: Gravity Fed Hot & Cold (Equal Pressures) Gravity Fed Hot & Mains Cold (Differential Pressure 5:1 Max) Un-vented Systems Thermal Store Systems Instantaneous Water Heaters (Combination Boiler) Pumped System Note: On gravity systems the minimum distance from the underside of the cold water storage tank to the showerhead should be at least 5 metres to ensure adequate performance. 04

5 Installation It is recommended that when installing the valve in a recessed situation, full access is provided for servicing purposes. A minimum wall cavity of 55mm is required. The plate can be used as a template by drawing a round the plate and measuring in by 15mm to give sufficient clearance. There is an extension kit available to cater for thicker Walls/tiles. (Order separately - SHC EXT01 C) 1. Secure the shower valve (1) into the wall cavity with the screws (19) provided. 2. Engage the 15mm supply pipes (not supplied) into the inlet connections (26) and tighten the nuts (28) ensuring that the olives (28) are in place. 1. Slide the concealing plate (30) onto the shower valve. 2. Fit the handle (8 & 16) to the mixer valve, note the handle (8) will require its pin to line up with the temperature stop (5), see the Setting section on page 7 on how to calibrate the shower valve. Tighten the grub screws (9 & 17) and cap the heads with the caps (10 & 18). Note: Please consider the following when connecting the outlets. The outlet marked V has the higher flow rate than the outlet marked D

6 Installation Wall Outlet There are two methods of fixing the wall outlet depending on the type of wall: a: With rear access once wall is finished Screw the threaded connecting tube (32) into the wall outlet (35) ensuring the washer (33) is fitted in-between. Fit the rubber gasket (34) to the back of the wall outlet, place the assembly through a 25 30mm hole in the wall and secure with the backnut (31). Connect the wall outlet assembly to the shower valve outlet. b: Without rear access once wall is finished Fit a wall plate elbow (not supplied) within the wall cavity and plumb in from the shower valve. Screw the threaded connecting tube (32) into the wall-plate elbow (35) using a suitable thread sealant. The threaded connecting tube thread (32) must protrude from the finished wall by 5-15mm. Once the wall has been finished, the wall outlet (35), washer (33) and rubber gasket (34) can be fitted to the threaded connecting tube (using a suitable thread sealant). Note: The backnut (31) is not required

7 Operation There are two control handles on the shower. Turn the diverter flow control handle (left or right) to turn on and increase the flow to one of the outlets (only one outlet can be on at any one time), the V outlet has an Eco click function. The temperature control handle is turned anti-clockwise for hot, clockwise for cold. The maximum temperature is factory set to 42ºC at the safety stop position. Setting The maximum temperature can be adjusted to suit site conditions or user preference. To adjust this, follow this procedure: 1. Position the temperature control handle to the maximum temperature point and turn on the flow handle control handle letting the water run long enough to ensure that the hot water supply is at its maximum temperature. 2. The shower has been factory set to 42ºC at the first stop position with balanced supply pressures of 0.5 Bar. 3. Whilst the water is flowing remove the temperature control handle (8), by removing the cap (10) and loosening the grub screw (9). 4. Turn the cartridge spindle (4) until the required maximum temperature is achieved (the spindle many need to be repositioned to allow the head to line backup with the stop ring (5) on the shower), anti-clockwise to increase the temperature and clockwise to reduce it. 5. Important: Refit the handle so that the stop pin in the handle (8) fits inside the rim of the nylon stop ring (5). 6. Push the handle back on and replace the grub screw (9) and cap (10). 7. Turn off the flow at the flow control handle. 07

8 General Cleaning Your fitting has a high quality finish and should be treated with care to preserve the visible surfaces. All surfaces will wear if not cleaned correctly, the only safe way to clean your mixer valve is to wipe with a soft damp cloth. Stains can be removed using washing up liquid. All bath cleaning powders and liquids will damage the surface of your fitting, even the non scratch cleaners. 1. Remove the temperature control cover cap, loosen the screw and pull the handle off the cartridge spindle 2. Remove the plastic stop. Important: Take note of the position of the plastic stop and handle they must be refitted in the same positions. Note: Never use abrasive detergents or disinfectants or those containing alcohol, hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid. Bristan recommend E-cloth for cleaning all of our bathroom & kitchen products. Using just water, E- cloth gives a smear free, deep clean by breaking up and holding dirt, which normal cloths leave behind. Order through your Bristan stockist (order code: ECLOTH). Cartridge Maintenance We advise that the TMV is regularly serviced in hard water areas to maintain optimum performance (see Map of Hard Water Regions in the UK overleaf). Isolate both hot and cold water supplies to the mixer valve by either: 3. Unscrew the thermostatic cartridge anticlockwise out from the mixer valve body. 4. Place the cartridge in a bowl and carefully add hot water (just off the boil) and vinegar to de-scale the cartridge. Leave in the solution until the water has cooled and rinse with clean water. 5. Grease the seals with a silicon grease supplied by Bristan (part number: SP ) and carefully refit. 6. Refit the thermostatic cartridge by screwing it into the shower body clockwise until tight. 7. Reset the maximum temperature (refer to setting section) and refit the handle, screw and handle cover cap. Turning the water supply off at the mains stop cock or Turning off the isolation valves to the mixer valve. 08

9 Troubleshooting Symptom No flow or low flow rate and / or varying temperatures. Water leaking from outlet. Maximum water temperature too hot or cold. Cause Partially closed stop or service valve in water supply pipework to the mixer valve. Instantaneous water heater cycles on and off as the flow rate or pressure is too low. Head of water is below the minimum distance required. Inlet filter is partially blocked. Hot or cold water being drawn off elsewhere causing pressure changes or instantaneous boiler changes. Airlock or partial blockage of the pipework. No hot or cold water reaching the mixer valve. This is normal for a short time after turning off. Shower control valve failing to close fully, possibly due to water borne debris. Flow control valve seals damaged. Maximum water temperature set incorrectly. Remedy Open stop or service valve. Increase water flow rate or pressure through system Contact the boiler manufacturer. Refer to the Specification section. Clean or replace, flush through pipework before refitting. Do not use other water outlets when using the mixer valve. Flush through pipework to ensure removal of debris and any airlocks. Check hot and cold feeds (the valve will shut down if either the hot or cold supply fails). Adjust the angle of the showerhead as necessary to vary draining time. Remove shower control valve assembly and check. Refer to Maintenance section before dismantling shower valve. Check condition of flow control valve and replace as necessary (refer to Maintenance section. Reset maximum water temperature. Refer to Setting section. Outlet water temperature too hot / cold. Inlet filter is partially blocked. Installation conditions outside operating parameters. Check insert filters for any blockages and clean as necessary. Service the mixer valve as recommended. Refer to Maintenance section. 09

10 Troubleshooting Symptom Water temperature too cold maximum water temperature incorrectly set. Only hot or cold water from TMV outlet. Cause Hot water temperature is less than 10ºC above the required blend temperature. Instantaneous water heater not igniting because water flow rate is too low. Instantaneous water heater not igniting because water pressure is to low. Inlet water supplies are reversed (hot to cold supply). Inlet filter is partially blocked. Remedy Adjust hot water temperature or wait for water to reheat if stored system is used. Increase water flow rate through the system. Check cartridge inlet filters and clean or replace. Refer to Maintenance section. Contact the boiler manufacturer. Increase water pressure through system. Contact the boiler manufacturer. Check the connections are the correct way round. Hot on the left and cold on the right when viewed from the front. Rework pipework as necessary. Clean or replace, flush through pipework before refitting. 10

The guarantee is only available to original purchasers who have proof of purchase. The installation must allow ready access to all products for the purpose of inspection, maintenance or replacement. Any part found to be defective during the above guarantee period will be replaced without charge, providing that the product has been installed in accordance with the instructions, used as intended, and regularly serviced. Servicing should be carried out at regular intervals of no more than 12 months and more frequently in hard water areas (heavy lime scale) areas. In the unlikely event that any problems are encountered with the product s performance on installation, you must obtain guidance/authorisation from our Customer Service Department, and be able to supply proof and date of purchase, before any remedial action is taken. The guarantee excludes general wear and tear and damage caused by accident, misuse or neglect, and does not cover the following:. Components that are subject to general wear and tear such as filters, seals, O rings and washers etc. Damage caused by faulty installation Damage caused by lime scale or any waterborne debris Damage caused by inappropriate cleaning products (see user instructions) Damage caused by the use of non-bristan parts The product being used for a purpose other than intended by the manufacturer. In the interests of continuous product improvement Bristan reserves the right to alter specification as necessary.
