03 Showersave Installation Manual 1.1 Introduction Showersave QB1-21 & QB1-21C (Showersave) On average, a shower uses 60 litres of water at a temperature of between 40 and 41 C. This shower water goes straight down the drain, wasting a great deal of heat and energy. By running the hot water through the QB1, this heat can be transferred to the water on its way to the boiler and/or the cold water tap of the shower's mixer tap. The heat transfer takes place simultaneously while you shower. Note: The Showersave QB1-21 and QB1-21C are similar systems. The ONLY difference is the type of waste water rotator used at the top of the heat exchanger. The heat exchangers are exactly the same. QB1-21 Rotator QB1-21C Cyclone Rotator WRAS Approved product No: Showersave The NCM (SAP) Identifier is Showersave QB1-21 OR Showersave QB1-21C.This is supplemented by the Model Qualifier denoting the system configuration (System A, B or C). Installation systems comprising either QB1-21 or QB1-21C are referred to as QB1 within this document, with Model Qualifier as appropriate. The QB1 is 2.1 m long and can only be installed vertically. The QB1 is therefore, generally, only suitable for heat reclamation from shower water from an upstairs shower. Cross section of the QB1 Waste water from shower To drain Preheated tap water Waste water flows down the inside of the heat exchanger in a thin film. Cold tap water

04 Showersave Installation Manual The QB1 is connected to the shower waste. If the shower is integrated into the bath, the QB1 can be connected to the bath waste. The QB1 needs to be placed as close as possible to the shower waste water exit point. When showering starts it takes a short time for the QB1 to respond and contribute to heating the cold water. This means the temperature of the shower water will continue to rise for some time. It is a requirement that thermostatic mixer valves are used. 1.3 Description of the heat exchanger The QB1 is made of copper. The QB1 has a double barrier between the waste water and the potable fresh water. The heat exchanger consists of 3 pipes. A thin-walled pipe, the so-called lining, has been installed around the inner pipe. The minuscule space between the lining and the inner pipe contains air. If the inner pipe develops a leak, this becomes visually apparent as waste water will drip from the heat exchanger. This double wall separation is in accordance with EN 1717, tested and certified by KIWA. The system is also WRAS approved. 1.4 Standard Assessment Procedure recognition Every QB1, when shipped is identified with a unique serial numbered label attached to it. A second NCM (SAP) Identifier label is also supplied. The installer must complete the Model name and Qualifier field, on the label, with the system configuration. This label must be visible for inspection by affixing it to a nearby service or boiler cupboard without the need for disassembly. If the label is not visible and / or the serial number does not correspond with the commissioning certificate that is completed, the system will not be guaranteed, nor will it be recognised in SAP. 10 010 Showersave Installation Manual 4.0 Installation 4.1 Overview of installation - Systems A, B & C The inlet side of the QB1 is connected to the mains water system. The outlet side can be installed in three different ways, that are recognised in SAP, namely: System: A. Combined connection to the shower mixer tap's cold water connection and the water heater. B. Separate connection of the cold water connection to the shower's mixer tap. C. Separate connection of the cold water connection to the water heater. The largest energy and CO2 saving is achieved by using System A. The performance of all 3 systems are recognised within the SAP Products Characteristics Database (PCDB) where the relevant efficiencies can be found

011 Showersave Installation Manual 4.2 Important notes to designers & installers The system should be installed by a suitably qualified plumber, with system design consideration being equally important to a correct installation. For recognition of the QB1 within SAP, a system design checklist and certificate of installation should be completed and signed, with copies kept for the home information pack (homeowner), the installer and sent to Building Products Distributors at the address below. Building Control Officers may also request a copy. The flow chart below will assist in both the design and installation process. The design and installation processes outlined within this document are designed to comply with Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACOP) L8, which are the guidelines for the prevention of Legionnaire's disease in UK Commercial buildings. ACOP L8 is designed to provide guidance for all installations in public and commercial premises. It should be noted that within a residential environment in the UK homes generally cannot comply with the ACOP L8 as interior temperatures can frequently exceed 20⁰C.

012 Showersave Installation Manual Decision flow chart Is the water pressure > 1 bar? NO Do not install Showersave system Is the system pressurised /unvented? NO Do not install Showersave system Is there space within (rather than externally ) the building to install the Showersave? NO Do not install Showersave system Which system is the most appropriate in terms of the installation? The Showersave will always be mounted close to theshower, and hence a connection to the cold inlet on the mixer tap is straightforward. T he water heater may be mounted some way away, which may make routing the Showersave output to the heater cold inlet more difficult. In this case a System B installation solves the problem. System B : Lowest efficiency System A: : Highest efficiency System C : Medium efficiency System A - the pre- heated output of the Showersaveis used to supply both the cold input to the mixer tap, and also the supply to the water heater. System B - only the mixer tap input. See 3.1 Systems A, B & C System C - only the water heater.

013 Showersave Installation Manual 4.3 Positioning of Showersave The QB1 should always be placed in an easily accessible location in order that inspection work can be undertaken. The warranty will become obsolete if this is not the case. The WWHRS must always be installed within heated envelope for SAP recognition. Possible locations: Alongside internal soil stack through which the waste water would have run Fixed cabinet under stairs if there is sufficient height Pre-defined and specified technical area Always place Showersave as close to the shower outlet as possible. Long run lengths will influence the systems effectiveness. 4.4 Points of note The Showersave can be installed in homes, apartments, hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, etc. Also industrial companies can easily utilise the heat from the waste water. The design checklist at Appendix B should be completed to ensure recognition. To be recognised in SAP the QB1 must be used in conjunction with a mains pressure hot water system, such as a combination boiler or an unvented hot (pressurised) water cylinder. It can also be used in conjunction with a solar thermal system. When installing the QB1 in conjunction with a combination boiler, ensure the appropriate system is installed that can accept pre-heated water. Refer to the boiler manufacturers' data sheet. Points of note Ensure the heat exchanger is easily accessible so that it can be easily installed and uninstalled. Ensure that a non-return valve and a shut-off valve have been installed and that these are easily accessible. Ensure that the heat exchanger is installed in a space in which the temperature does not normally exceed 25 C, DO NOT INSULATE the QB1 Make sure the tap water connections are preferably made using straight thread, that no hemp is used and that the tightening moment is limited to 120 Nm. Following installation the system should be cleaned in accordance with ACOP L8 or BS 6700 (Design, installation, testing and maintenance of services supplying water for domestic use within buildings and their curtilages). Be aware there may be some pressure loss on the tap side when a high flow rate shower head is in use.

014 Showersave Installation Manual 4.5 Typical system installation NB: rotator for QB1-21 or Cyclone rotator for QB1-21C Notes: 1) The rotator at the top of the Showersave may be located within the ceiling void, depending on the height of the room. 2) The size of the boxed off unit will be no more than 2,400mm in height by 340mm in width and 240mm in depth. 3) The boxing off needs to be in accordance with the NHBC standards AD part E. 4) The Showersave, is considered a device. The space it is installed in should be large enough so that inspection can be carried out. Access should be possible without too much work. 5) The cold to the base of the Showersave can come from above or from a location on the same floor. Consideration should be given to whether the system is being installed as System A (Normal), System B or System C.

015 Showersave Installation Manual 1. Install the Showersave vertically to a solid surface, using the 2 brackets and 10mm studs supplied. 2. Ensure the 2 push fit connectors on the waste pipe (1 x 90ᵒ and 1 x 45ᵒ) are positioned as per the photos below (QB1-21 only). These pictures show the correct installation of the 90 and 45 connectors on the waste. Correctly fitting these connectors will ensure the best energy recovery performance. QB1-21 only 3. Using the straight through 50x40 compression reducer supplied, connect the waste from the bottom of the Showersave to the SVP.

016 Showersave Installation Manual 4. The mains water supply are connected to the top and bottom of the heat exchanger using 1/2 BSP iron male fittings. 5. Only use PTFE tape to seal the thread, DO NOT USE HEMP 6. Do not over torque, max 120mm 7. Install an isolator on both top and bottom mains water supply 8. Install non-return valve before the shut-off valve 9. A drain tap to bottom supply could be helpful 10. Do not wrap the Showersave with insulation 11. Return the warm flow from top of Showersave in accordance with the designated system (A, B or C) and in line with best plumbing practices. 12. Attach the 2 nd SAP Identifier label supplied to the inside of the boiler cabinet so it is easily visible to the energy assessor NCM (SAP) Identifier: (delete as appropriate) Technology type Technology category Manufacturer Brand name Showersave QB1-21 Building Products Distributors Ltd Showersave QB1- Unit 21 Avondale Business Park, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim, BT39 9AU 21C Waste Water Heat Recovery System (WWHRS) Instantaneous Shower Heat Recovery BPD Ltd Showersave Serial no Model name QB1-21 / QB1-21C (delete as appropriate) Model Qualifier System A/ System B/ System C (delete as appropriate) Notes This dwelling is fitted with a Waste Water Heat Recovery System (WWHRS) which is recognized by the Governments Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) for Energy Rating of Dwellings. Note: One label should be permanently affixed to the WWHRS unit and another to a nearby Boiler or Service cupboard.

017 Showersave Installation Manual 4.6 Installation of Rotators QB1-21 & QB1-21C The supply of waste water to the Showersave must take place a rotator which is supplied with the system, when requested, please refer to the instructional drawings for installation. The rotator makes the waste water rotate as it enters the Showersave, whirling it against the side walls of the inner pipe so it flows down the inner pipe's walls along the entire length. This is important for reasons of efficiency. REMEMBER: if not installed correctly, and in accordance with these instructions, SAP recognition becomes invalid. 1. Standard rotator QB1-21 The 45 bend is attached to the top of the Showersave and angled to allow the 90 bend to point in the appropriate direction. The 40 x 50 reducer is then used to connect to the shower waste water pipe (if 40mm). The external diameter of the inner pipe is 50mm, so a 40/50mm reducer may be required. Using the fittings supplied, the rotator allows connection to BS EN :2000, BS EN :2000 or BS EN :2000 waste systems. 2. Installation of the Cyclone rotator for QB1-21C Vertical fixing Horizontal fixing Cyclone rotator Top of QB1-21C

018 Showersave Installation Manual 5.0 Maintenance & Safety 5.1 Maintenance & cleaning Generally no maintenance or cleaning is required. Efficiency can slightly decrease as a result of dirt accumulating on the inside of the Showersave. However, the waste water from the shower flows at a high speed of over 1 m/s along the inner pipe's wall. This is comparable to the water speeds in a dishwasher. The water flows through the pipe in 2 seconds and so no dirt can accumulate. To a large extent the Showersave is self -cleaning. If, for whatever reason, dirt accumulates, then a soap-based cleaning agent can be used to flush the pipe. Cleaning agents based on scouring or polishing agents are not recommended as these can stick to the wall of the pipe, reducing its efficiency. Connecting a wash basin to the Showersave is not recommended as shaving gel and toothpaste are very sticky and could adhere to the wall of the inner pipe. If the system is left to stand for more than three days it is good practice to flush the system to drain slowly to avoid aerosol. This can be achieved by slowly (to avoid splashing) turning on a hot water tap for three minutes. In a commercial environment, under L8, It is good practice to clean and disinfect Showerheads and hoses on a Quarterly basis. In accordance with L8, and only in commercial situations, should a risk assessment be undertaken following installation of a system/s. 5.2 Legionella risk and mitigation When no cold water is flowing up the Showersave, the temperature in the pipe should be prevented from becoming higher than 25 C. The Showersave may therefore not be installed near heat conducting pipes, on warm surfaces or in spaces with constantly high temperatures (>25 C). The cold water pipe, connection and the outer wall of the Showersave should therefore not be insulated. Installing the Showersave in the way shown in the diagram System A will mean that whenever the hot water system runs the cold water system will be flushed. This will result in stagnation being minimised and complies with recommendations within ACOP L8. This would be the most common method of installation. In instances where it is not possible to ensure a Tee at the cold side of the shower's thermostatic mixing valve, then a venturi effect assembly should be considered. This is a straightforward assembly of different pipe diameters to ensure stagnation on the cold side is minimised. Following installation, the system should be cleaned in accordance with L8 or BS6700 and pressure tested. This is no difference to installing any standard plumbing/pipe system.

019 Showersave Installation Manual If the system is installed in a non-private building, ACOP L8 recommends that all new/modified plumbing requires a risk assessment to be undertaken in order to comply. 5.2 Warranty The Showersave QB1-21 & QB1-21C come with a 5 year warranty. The warranty is conditional on the system being installed in accordance with this manual and advice given, from time to time, by BPD Ltd. It must also meet all the requirements of this manual if the system is to be recognised within SAP Assessments and therefore Part L of the Building Regulations (Part F Northern Ireland). In order to ensure warranty is valid, completed checklists and installation details must be registered with the manufacturer: sales@bpdlimited.com Should you have any comments or additions to this manual, please do inform us.
