Model Description In addition to the features described in the previous section, each model has unique features and components that determine its cost/efficiency/sound-level mix. Model ACL and ACX Two mid-line units offering a combination of excellent efficiency and sound ratings at a moderate price. Fan Motors: 830 rpm fan motors; the ACX having 1.0 HP and the ACL having 1.5 HP. Fan Blades: Both models have patented blade design providing high air flow capacity with low sound levels. The ACL has a slightly more aggressive design, moving more air for greater capacity, but with larger motors and a sound level higher by about 3 db. Galvanized Steel Cabinet: Galvanized steel is standard with painted galvanized or aluminum as options. Model ACH The ACH model offers the most capacity per dollar for applications where efficiency and sound level are not critical. Fan Motors: Fan motors are 1140 rpm, 1.5 HP. Fan Blades: Standard fan blades are furnished, providing maximum air flow but with higher sound levels and lower efficiency. Galvanized Steel Cabinet: Galvanized steel is standard with painted galvanized or aluminum as options. Fan/Circuit Configuration Fan Rows: All models have either one or dual rows of fans with up to seven fans in a row, for a total of 14 fans for a dual row unit. The number of fan rows is part of the Model Code as shown on the previous page. Refrigerant Circuits: Dual row condensers have two refrigerant circuits, one for each row of fans and match up with Daikin WGZ and WGS chillers, which have two circuits. The two refrigerant circuits can be optionally equipped with a factory manifold to make one refrigerant circuit. Single row condensers have a single refrigerant circuit and must be used in pairs on Daikin chillers, each condenser matched to one of the chiller circuits. A pair of single row units is usually only used in the rare case when space requirements dictate two long narrow condensers end-to-end or when they are in separate locations. The single row configuration allows more ambient air to flow through the coils than does a unit with dual row, side-by-side fans and so they often have a little more capacity than a two row unit with the same number of fans. For a given capacity, two single-row condensers will cost more than a single, dual-row unit. Dual fan, two circuit condensers can be manifolded together to form a single refrigeration circuit. 4 Catalog 622-2

Design Features and Benefits Ease of Installation The condensers are designed to reduce the cost and time required for installation. All lifting brackets are factory installed, and the legs are designed for quick installations. Fan motors are factory wired to a control panel providing a single point for field wiring. The control panel has a through-the-door disconnect. A variety of fan cycling control panels can be factory mounted and wired to the condenser, eliminating the need for a field-mounted built-up control panel. Lifting lugs are factory mounted for easy rigging and installation. Dynamic Stress Testing Fan motor and blade assemblies have undergone dynamic stress testing. This testing measures the stress levels and frequency of vibration of the fan during actual operation of the condenser. This type of testing ensures a design with low vibration levels and long, trouble-free service life of the air moving assembly. Condenser Cabinet Condenser cabinets are designed for attractive appearance and corrosion protection. Models ACH, ACX, and ACL are galvanized and have a painted galvanized finish or aluminum construction as options. Condensers have a unique internal frame design consisting of heavy gauge galvanized steel tube sheets and motor rails. Fan motors are bolted to motor rail for increased reliability, reduced noise and vibration, and ease of replacement. Full width fan baffles are provided to increase unit rigidity and prevent windmilling during fan cycling. Condenser Coils The standard condensers use high efficiency coils with corrugated aluminum fins bonded to staggered copper tubes. Condenser coils are designed to operate with the new generation of environmentally safe refrigerants such as R-134a, R-407C and R-410A. Sub-coolers Sub-coolers are pre-piped, integral components. Capacity listings have sub-cooling incorporated in the ratings, making selection easier and simplifying installation requirements. Multi-circuiting Multi circuiting of the condenser to match the system requirement is available at no extra cost. Each circuit has its own inlet and outlet connection, labeled to avoid installation confusion. Daikin WGZ scroll and WGS screw chillers all have two refrigerant circuits. Catalog

Floating Tube All condensers use a Patented Floating Tube Design (U.S. Patent No. 5,158,134) to eliminate refrigerant leaks at the tube sheets. Additional tubes are added to the condenser coil. These tubes are expanded into the aluminum fins and condenser tube sheets. These anchor tubes support the weight of the coil, but are not a part of the refrigerant circuit. The tubes in the refrigerant circuit are expanded into the fins, but float through oversized holes in the tube sheets. Tube sheet leaks are virtually eliminated, since the tubes which carry refrigerant never come in contact with the tube sheet. Fan Motors Condenser fan motors are high efficiency, three-phase motors designed for outdoor condenser applications. Motors have thermal overload protection and permanently lubricated ball bearings. Separate fan motors are designed for 1140 rpm, 830 rpm or variable speed. All motors are factory wired to a condenser control panel to provide a single point for field wiring. Fan motors are available in 460/3/60, /3/60 or 575/3/60 on the ACH model only. Patented design floating tubes dramatically reduce tube sheet leaks. Fan Blades Direct drive fan blades are designed to pull air through the condenser coil to ensure uniform air distribution over the entire coil. Fan blades have been selected and laboratory tested for optimum performance and minimum noise at each operating speed. Model ACH uses standard fan blades; Models ACX and ACL use a specially designed blade with lower sound levels. Fan Guards Fan guards are PVC-coated steel for maximum corrosion protection. Fan guards have extended height to increase the distance from the fan blade to the guard, reducing the noise level of the condenser. Fin Spacing Standard condenser fin spacing is 14 fins per inch (fpi). Fin spacing of 10, and 12 fins perinch are optionally available. Weather Protection All units have a weatherproof control panel with door-mounted interrupt disconnect switch and Sealtite wiring as an option. 6 Catalog 622-2

Discharge Pressure Control Proper application of controls is important to a successful installation. Daikin McQuay aircooled condensers have several control options available. System Arrangements: The fan control arrangement for WGZ and WGS chillers are shown in Table 2 and Table 3 on page 8. Condenser pressure control is accomplished by varying the total coil airflow by changing the number of operating fans and/or the speed of the first on, last off fan. The number of control stages is shown in the tables. The SpeedTrol option should be used when unit operation is expected in ambient temperatures between 0 F and 35 F. When condenser circuits are manifolded, the corresponding controls need to be coupled together. Control Options: Four standard control options are available. Other special options can be offered to meet individual requirements. 1. Standard Control (Code NN) The standard unit is provided with a contactor for each fan motor. A customer-supplied, and field-installed control signal from another source is required to energize each contactor based on the condenser pressure. Field wiring between the compressorized product and remote condenser is required. Refer to local codes for this wiring. The contactor control voltage is 115 volts and a transformer is not provided but is an available option. Typical control logic is to start additional fans as condensing pressure increases. Although the parameters of the companion refrigeration system dictate the control strategy, it is good practice to only use this option for operation above ambient air temperatures of 35 F. Standard Control using Chiller MicroTech II Control Staging The Standard Control (Code Y) or Standard Control with SpeedTrol (Code C) can utilize the standard pressure sensing capability of a Daikin chiller s MicroTech II controller(s) to stage the fans. The WGZ chiller has a single microprocessor with eight fan control digital outputs, four for each refrigerant circuit. The WGS chiller has a separate controller for each of the two circuits with six fan stages, for a total of twelve for the unit. Field wiring is required between the chiller MicroTech II controller and the fan contactors located in the condenser. The number of connections will depend on the condenser size and arrangement as shown in Table 2 or Table 3. This option uses the standard condenser control included with the condenser and the standard MicroTech II control included with the chiller. Field-supplied interconnecting wiring is the only cost associated with this arrangement. It does not provide variable speed for operation below 35 F. Use control option #2 to add Speedtrol for operation from 35 F. to 0 F. 2. Standard Control with SpeedTrol (Code ST) This option is identical to the Standard Control (Code = NN) except the first on, last off fan will have a variable speed drive. As the ambient air temperature drops below 35 F, the fan speed will slow down, reducing condenser air flow, to maintain the minimum allowable condensing pressure for the companion unit. A control transformer is provided to power the variable speed drive. Important: This option does not include a method of starting or cycling the balance of fans on the condenser. Some means to do so must be supplied, mounted and wired in the field. The MicroTech II controller on Daikin WGZ or WGS chillers can provide this Catalog

staging function, or some other multi-step controller or multiple pressure switches can be used. 3. Pressure Switch Control with Control Transformer (Code MH) This option provides direct control of discharge pressure through a series of factorymounted and wired pressure switches (designated as FCP-Fan Cycle Pressure Control-on the wiring diagrams). As the condenser pressure increases, more pressure switches close and start additional condenser fans. Field wiring between the compressorized product and the remote condenser is not required. A control power transformer is included for 115-volt power for the control voltage. Although the parameters of the refrigerant system dictates, it is good practice to only use this option only for operation above ambient air temperatures of 35 F. 4. Pressure Switch Control with Control Transformer and SpeedTrol (Code VM) This option is identical to the pressure switch control system described above except with the addition of variable speed control to the first on, last off fan for each circuit. As ambient temperatures drop below 35 F, the fan speed will be reduced to maintain the proper minimum condenser pressure. 10 Selection Procedure The capacity for air-cooled condensers is based on Total Heat of Rejection (THR) at the condenser. Total heat of rejection is equal to net refrigeration at the evaporator (compressor capacity) plus the energy input into the refrigerant by the compressor (heat of compression). The heat of compression will vary depending on the compressor manufacturer, type of compressor and the operating conditions of the compressor. Whenever possible, obtain the heat of compression value from the compressor manufacturer for the specific conditions. If not available, the THR can be estimated using the following formula: THR = (Compressor Capacity) X (Heat of Compression Factor in Table 4 or Table 5) Table 4 contains heat of compression factors for suction-cooled, hermetic compressors. Table 5 contains factors for open drive compressors (non-daikin applications). For refrigeration systems beyond the range of Table 4 and Table 5, use the following equations to estimate THR: Open Compressors: THR = Compressor Capacity (BTUH) + (2545) x (Brake Horsepower, BHP) Suction-Cooled Compressors: THR = Compressor Capacity (BTUH) + (3413 X KW) Altitude Correction The compressor capacity is affected by altitude. If the condenser location is above sea level, a correction is required to the THR, as follows: THR (altitude) = THR x altitude Correction Factor, Table 6 Selection Example Compressor capacity: 350,000 Btuh Evaporator temperature: +35 F Condensing temperature: 120 F Ambient temperature 95 F Refrigerant: Compressor type: Condenser type: Condenser altitude: R-410A Semi-hermetic, suction cooled ACH, 1140 rpm 1,000 feet Step 1: Estimate Condenser THR From Table 4 for suction-cooled compressors, at +35 F suction and 120 F condensing temperature, select a heat of compressor factor of (interpolated from 30 F and 40 F THR in BTU = Compressor capacity x Heat of Compression Factor THR = 350,000 x = 456,750 Btuh Step 2: Correct for Altitude From Table 6 obtain an altitude correction factor of 1.02 for 1,000 feet. THR (from step 1) x Altitude Correction Factor 456,750 x 1.02 = 465,885 Btuh Step 3: Calculate Design Condenser T.D. Design Condenser Temperature Difference = condensing Temp Ambient Temp Design Condenser T.D. = 120 F - 95 F = 25 degrees F 10 Catalog 622-2

Step 4: Condenser Selection Condenser capacities for ACH condensers are located in Table 7. These capacities are given in MBH/ TD. Convert the THR from step 2 to MBH/ TD by dividing by 1,000 and the Design TD. 465,885 Btuh / 1000 / 25 = 18.6 Select Model ACH 040A S (single fan row) or ACH 040A D (dual row). The ACH 040A S will be lower in cost, the ACH 040A D will have a more compact footprint. Calculate actual TD and condensing temperature: determine the actual TD by dividing the design THR by the condenser capacity. For the ACH 040A S: Actual TD = / 21.8 = 21.3 degrees F. Actual condensing temperature is 95 F degrees = F. Table 4, Heat of Compression Factor for Suction Cooled Compressors Suction Condensing Temperature F Temp. 22 Application Data Fan Cycle Control Panels Fan cycling panels are available to cycle fans on condensing pressure or interface with customers controls. All fans are cycled with contactors. Fans cycle separately with one contactor per fan, but may have more than one contactor (fan) per control step. Standard control circuit voltage is 115 volts. Control circuits with 24 or 230 volts are available on request. Control circuits are factory wired to a control circuit terminal board for convenient single point field wiring. Standard control circuits require an external power supply for powering control circuit (by others). A control circuit transformer is available on condensers as a factorymounted option to provide power to the control circuit. Discharge Pressure Fan Cycling Condenser fans can be controlled by pressure switches which monitor condenser pressure. Pressure fan cycling is ideal for those condensers which see a significant change in condenser load. Since the controls sense condensing pressure, they can cycle fans at any ambient temperature, in response to a change in condensing pressure. Variable Speed Condenser head pressure control is provided by varying the air flow through the condenser by changing the RPM of the condenser fan. The fan motor next to the header end of the condenser is the variable speed fan. The remainder of the fans are constant speed and are cycled separately using pressure control or customer input signal. On condensers with two rows of fans, two variable speed fans are provided (one per circuit) and the remainder of the fans are constant speed. The variable speed control package consists of a special variable speed motor (1140 RPM, single phase) and an electronic speed control which controls the speed of the motor in response to condensing pressure. Fan motor, speed control and all related components are all factory mounted and wired. Variable speed control provides more even system operation than pure fan cycling. Condenser Flooding Control Back-flooding the condenser with liquid refrigerant, controlled by a field-supplied backflooding valve, and using refrigerant from a field-supplied receiver, can be used effectively to control compressor discharge pressure. This technique reduces the condenser s effective condensing surface. Using fan control in conjunction with back-flooding will greatly reduce the extra amount of refrigerant required to flood the condenser. The extra quantity of refrigerant required with either method is given in installation manual, IOMM A-C Cond. 22 Catalog 622-2
