2 Heating Systems The modern heating system was developed during the past century when oil was the main source of energy. Oil based hot water generators were installed in homes all around Europe, hot water was produced and stored in liter tanks at C and was not only used for sanitation but also for heating. The average heat loss of a house/apartment was around 200W/m 2. Rooms were equipped with radiators in which hot water was circulated, this form of heat radiating at a very low efficiency accumulated at ceiling level, as a result dry air and a very uncomfortable feeling. However, this heating system became the standard and state of the art, plumbers were educated to install the system and mechanical engineers calculated the heat loss of an average house/apartment, calculating each room separately to size the radiator at a set temperature. Industry developed different components such as: valves, radiators, tanks, oil and gas heaters etc, wholesalers were the source for the plumbers, however the plumber was in charge of the system and he had the responsibility to ensure that the system functioned properly. Of course new ideas developed in order to provide a higher comfort as standards of living grew, therefore next to the radiator a floor heating system was developed based on both electric and water. The water based system reached a bigger market share mainly due to the availability of hot water, although in those days floor heating systems had their drawbacks. This was due to the need of relatively high floor temperatures to answer the 200W/m 2 heat loss, both systems were impossible to regulate. However temperatures were low and stable for a period. Installation became more complicated as other crafts where needed to complete the installations. To improve performance insulation was required, this and the concrete poured over the pipes became the responsibility of the installers. Over the years the demand for floor heating systems increased especially in high level homes designed by architects, floor heating gave freer wall space. The HVAC engineer as well as the plumber needed to be better educated to ensure a well functioning system. During the end of the 80 s and beginning of the 90 s the need to save energy became a very important issue, the answer was better insulation and as such decreased heat loss. Targets were set to reach heat loss levels of less than 75Wm 2. Floor heating systems became the preferred solution to heat the home, water temperatures needed to be relatively low. Apart from oil, gas and hot water generators other systems where designed. The Heat Pump became the most advanced system the industry was able to develop. The drawback of the Air Water Heat Pump is the phenomenon that when the outside temperature drops the efficiency (C.O.P) drops too. At the same time the Heat Pump will generate hot water at a lower temperature. Solutions were found to back up the Heat Pump by an electrical unit to ensure hot water at 40 C needed to heat the home. The Heat Pump system gained position and became state of the art Today due to climate changes new technologies are required; people need both heating and cooling. We are entering a new area which means: HOME ACCLIMATIZATION Home Acclimatization is needed more and more in town apartments and small offices as windows can not be opened due to pollution and noise. Improved insulation needs less energy to heat and cool an apartment. A well sized Air Water Heat-Pump will answer the need in the future for a comfortable indoor climate. 4 Controlled water temperature, heated or cooled by the Energy Unit & Heat Pump-B is constantly circulated in the copper pipes of the ACU (Air Circulation Unit). The temperature then disperses to the fins and the heated/cooled air is then circulated into the room by the fan, at a pre set temperature or in 3-5 different speeds which are set manually. 15 Sizing Climateck Heat Pump Basics The optimal operating situation for the Heat-Pump will be at an outside temperature of 7 C and water temperature of 35 C. In this situation the Heat Pump will provide a 3.3 C.O.P (1 Kwh input will result in 3.3 Kwh output). When temperatures drop below 0 C the C.O.P drops to a point where the cost of electricity will be the same if the Heat-Pump or an electrical resistance element is used. When sizing the Heat-Pump it s essential to calculate no more than 70% of the operation time. The heat loss of a building is calculated to 65W/m 2 in all areas. Meaning that if the lowest outside temperature in certain areas is -15 C the insulation is increased compared to an area in which the temperature drops below +2 C. However in both cases the heat loss will be at the lowest temperature 65W/m 2. This means that in areas where the lowest outside temperature is 15 C a smaller size Heat-Pump in combination with an electrical unit will be needed compared to and area where the lowest outside temperature does not drop below +2 C. The rational is that in the -15 C area the Heat-Pump will be in operation only when the outside temperature will be above 0 C. However at this outside temperature the heat loss of the building will only be about 30 to 40W/m 2 and as such the required Kwh to keep the apartment warm will drop by half. When the lowest outside temperature is only +2 C then the Heat-Pump can answer the Kwh needed. 15
