4 OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW This document describes the custom control features implemented for the single and dual ice rink refrigeration control systems. The primary application is ice rink temperature control. Special options for lighting control and other safety features have also been implemented. Detailed documentation for the standard M&M Refrigeration control features may be found in the associated documents listed below. The control descriptions found in this document are intended to highlight the differences from the standard control features and to fully document the custom control features. The following sections will discuss the equipment control by the software and identify which features are options. Sub Floor Warming System (Option) An option exist to control a sub slab warming systems using a sub slab temperature to control a pump. In the single rink system only one sub floor warming pump will exist. In the dual rink system two separate sub floor warming pumps will exist, one for each rink. The sub floor warming system pump is controlled either in MAN STOP, MAN START, or AUTOMATIC modes. In MAN STOP mode, the pump will remain stopped until the mode is changed. In MAN START mode, the pump will run until the mode is changed or the pump fails. In AUTOMATIC mode, the control is performed using a pump cut-in and pump cut-out setpoint. The pump is started when the temperature drops below the cut-in setpoint and stopped when the temperature rises above the cut-out setpoint. In any mode, if the auxiliary contact does not match the pump state an alarm will be generated and the pump will be failed. M&M Refrigeration

5 Exhaust Fan Control (Option) An option exist to control the engine room exhaust fan based on engine room temperature and refrigerant leak detection. The control of this feature will be the same in both the single rink and dual rink systems. The exhaust fan is controlled either in MAN STOP, MAN START, or AUTOMATIC modes. In MAN STOP mode, the fan will remain stopped until the mode is changed. In MAN START mode, the fan will run until the mode is changed. In AUTOMATIC mode, the control is performed using a fan on and a fan off temperature setpoint. When the engine room temperature is above the fan on setpoint the fan is started. When the engine room temperature is below the fan-off temperature the fan will be stopped. The fan will also be started whenever the refrigerant leak detector alarm is active when the fan is in AUTOMATIC mode. Snow Melt Pump Control (Option) An option exist to control a snow melt pump based on whether any of the compressors are running or not. The control of this feature will be the same in both the single rink and dual rink systems. The pump is controlled either in MAN STOP, MAN START, or AUTOMATIC modes. In MAN STOP mode, the pump will remain stopped until the mode is changed. In MAN START mode, the pump will run until the mode is changed or the pump fails. In AUTOMATIC mode, the pump will run whenever any compressor is running. In any mode, if the pump auxiliary contact does not match the pump state an alarm will be generated and the pump will be failed. kw Monitoring (Option) An option exist to monitor a kwh pulse input to determine energy usage. This feature will function the same on both the single rink and dual rink systems. The kwh pulse contact input is totaled and kwh per hour, day, week, month, and year is displayed and logged on a daily basis. The kwh value for each pulse is user-programmable but may not exceed kwh per pulse. The present kw and demand kw are computed, displayed, and logged in the normal system logs. The maximum daily demand kw is displayed along with the time of day the maximum occurred. A demand kw high alarm is generated if the demand kw exceeds a user-programmable high kw setpoint. Note : The maximum kwh pulse rate shall not exceed 20 pulses per second with a minimum pulse width of 20 milliseconds. The kwh pulse type is assumed to be the square type but may be changed to an impulse type at the factory prior to initial delivery of the system. The default demand window is 15 minutes but may also be changed at the factory to 30 or 60 prior to initial delivery of the system. M&M Refrigeration 2

6 Lighting Control (Option) An option exist to performing scheduling for a series of lighting control outputs. In the single rink system only three lighting outputs will exist. In the dual rink system a separate set of three light outputs will exist, one set for each rink. The light outputs are actually lighting levels. The operator has the ability to manually select a lighting level or schedule them for each rink. Three daily schedules are provided for each rink, each with 8 event times and light levels. A weekly schedule for each rink allows for different daily schedules to be selected based on the day of the week. The operator also has the ability to override the current lighting level for each rink. Additionally, scheduled events will override any selected light level. Level 1 will turn on the first output. Level 2 will turn on outputs 1 and 2. Level 3 will turn on all 3 outputs. Sequencer Control Enhancements The CCS sequencer control has been enhanced to meet the needs of the single and dual ice rink systems. In the single rink system the sequencer will control two recip compressors. In the dual rink system the sequencer will control three recip compressors. The following features were added for both types of rink systems. A detailed overview of the standard CCS sequencer control is covered in the attached document CCS Sequencer Control Overview. Control Parameter Selection The sequencer control allows the user to select which control parameter the system will use to control the compressors. The units can be sequenced based on brine return temperature or floor temperature. In a single rink system only one floor rink temperature sensor is present so the sequencer simply switches between brine return and floor temperature. However, in a dual rink system two separate rink temperature sensors exist, one for each rink. In both the single and dual rink systems separate sets of setpoints will be supplied for brine return temperature and the rink floor temperature(s). Floor Temperature Control During floor temperature control mode the sequencer will control the starting and stopping of compressors to maintain the required floor temperature setpoint. In the single rink configuration the currently scheduled floor temperature setpoint will be passed to the sequencer for appropriate compressor control. In the dual rink configuration two separate floor temperature setpoints will exist, one for each rink. The CCS will determine which setpoint and temperature is the worst case of the two rinks and pass that value to the sequencer for compressor control. In dual rink configuration the chiller pumps will also be used to help modulate the rink floor temperatures since the sequencer is controlling the compressors off of the worst case temperature setpoint value. Chiller control will be covered in a later section. M&M Refrigeration 3

7 Control Setpoints The sequencer will allow for two sets of control setpoints. One set will be used for the lead machine and the other set will be used for the lag machine(s). This feature will allow the first compressor to start very rapidly and allow the user to delay starting of lag compressor(s). The various control setpoints utilized in the sequenced are detailed in the attached CCS Sequencer Control Overview document. The sequencer setpoints will also include high and low alarm and failure setpoints for both the brine return temperature and the floor temperature sensor(s). A low failure on any of the sensors will fail the compressors. Condenser Control Enhancements The CCS condenser control has been enhanced to meet the needs of the single and dual ice rink systems. The additional features discussed below will function the same in both the single and dual ice rink systems. A detailed overview of the standard CCS condenser control is covered in the attached document CCS Condenser Control Overview. Condenser Stage Selection The user is able to configure the condenser stages to support two pumps and either two single speed fans or one two-speed fan. The user has the ability to select all possible combinations from the condenser lead list screen. When the screen is saved, the data will be checked for conflicts and corrected. If the two-speed fan is selected, no single speed fans will be allowed in the lead list. Therefore, the CCS will automatically remove the single speed fan entry during lead list verification if the two-speed fan is also selected. Once the lead list is saved and corrected, the condenser status screen will automatically adjust to display the correct number of stages. An important note is that should memory be lost or re-initialized the lead list configuration will default to the single speed fan configuration. Auxiliary Contacts The condenser pumps and fan motors all have auxiliary contact which will be monitored. When the auxiliary contact does not match the pump or fan state for more then 3 seconds the CCS will generate an alarm. Condenser Heater (Option) An option exist to control the energizing of a condenser heater output based on a thermostat input. The heater control will allow the heater to be placed in one of the following modes: OFF, ON, AUTO. When in the OFF mode, the heater output will remain off until the mode is changed. When in the ON mode, the heater output will turn on and remain on until the mode is changed. In the AUTO mode, the heater output will turn on whenever the thermostat is closed and turn off whenever the thermostat opens. M&M Refrigeration 4

8 Condenser Sump Level (Option) An option exist to monitor a condenser sump low level cutout (LLCO) float. The CCS will monitor the LLCO float input and generate an alarm and shutdown all condenser pumps when the float is active. Non-Condensables (Option) An option exist to allow the CCS to compute the non-condensables value. The CCS will monitor a condenser liquid outlet temperature input and based off of the system refrigerant be utilized calculate the non-condensables value. Compressor Control Enhancements The CCS compressor control has been enhanced to meet the needs of the single and dual ice rink systems. In the sing rink configuration the CCS will control two recip compressors. In the dual rink configuration the CCS will control three recip compressors. The additional features discussed below will function the same in both the single and dual ice rink systems. A detailed overview of the standard CCS compressor control is covered in the attached document CCS Compressor Control Overview. Compressor Modes The compressors can be set to run in either manual, automatic or sequenced mode. In all modes they will operate on the control parameter selected on the sequencer control screen (Floor Temp or Brine Return). In the dual rink configuration, when operating on floor temperature the rink temperature farthest away from its setpoint will be used for the control parameter. Compressor Stage Control The CCS compressor control has been modified to allow the normal and fast delay timers to be set in minutes instead of seconds. This allows the user to set the compressor stage delays to a higher value then the sequencer stage delay timers. When configured in this manner the CCS will never unload the compressor. Instead the sequencer will simply instruct the compressor to stop once the control parameter is below the deadband or bandwidth for the time period defined by its unload normal or fast stage delay respectively. Compressor Stage Configuration Each compressor can be customized to utilize up to a maximum of 4 stages. A compressor configuration screen is used to allow the user to select which stages are being used, the capacity value associated with each stage, and whether a stage is energize to load or energize to unload. In this way, each compressor can be configured based on its specific number of loaders or unloaders. An important note is that should memory be lost or re-initialized the configuration of the compressors will be lost and need to be re-entered. M&M Refrigeration 5

9 Compressor Control Overview The CCS monitors a discharge temperature and an oil temperature sensor on each compressor. The sensor values are displayed on status screens and logged in the op and trend log. The discharge temperature input has a user setable high alarm and high failure setpoint. The oil temperature input has a user setable high and low alarm and failure setpoints. Each compressor has a starter fault input and a starter failure output. When the fault signal goes active high the CCS will generate a failure message, fail the compressors, and energize the starter failure output. When the signal goes low the CSS will turn off the starter failure output. The CCS controls the oil return solenoid on each compressor. The solenoid is opened when the compressor motor starts and will remain open until the compressor motor stops. The CCS controls the jacket cooling solenoid on each compressor. The solenoid is opened when the compressor motor starts and will remain open until the compressor motor stops. The CCS monitors a series of safety inputs for each compressor: a low oil pressure safety input, a discharge pressure safety input, and a low suction pressure safety input. When any of the input signals go active low the CCS will generate an appropriate failure message and fail the compressor. The CCS inhibits these failure unless the compressor is running. Compressor Jacket Cooling Pump The operator is able to place the jacket cooling pump into either the MAN STOP, MAN START, or AUTOMATIC mode of operation. In MAN STOP, the pump will remain stopped until the mode of operation is changed. In MAN START, the pump will be started and remain running until manually stopped or failed. In AUTOMATIC mode, the jacket cooling pump is run whenever a compressor is running. Regardless of its mode of operation the pump auxiliary will be monitored and if the auxiliary state does not match the pump state for more then 3 seconds, the pump will be failed. Chiller Control The CCS contains a custom chiller control function to meet the needs of the single and dual ice rink systems. In the single rink configuration the CCS will control two chiller brine pumps. In the dual rink configuration the CCS will control three chiller brine pumps. The following sections will discuss the various functions of the chiller control and the differences between the single and dual rink version. M&M Refrigeration 6

10 Chiller Overview The chiller s standard configuration is typically a critically charged vessel without any level control. The CCS controls two or three brine pumps (based on rink configuration) each with starter auxiliaries, a high level shutdown (HLS) float, and a brine flow switch. The CCS continually monitors the HLS float and will generate a failure message along with shutting down the compressors and all chiller pumps when the input becomes active low. Chiller Pump Control The operator is able to each brine pump into either the MAN STOP, MAN START, or AUTOMATIC mode of operation. In MAN STOP, the pump will remain stopped until the mode of operation is changed. In MAN START, the pump will be started and remain running until manually stopped or failed. In AUTOMATIC mode, the brine pumps are controlled by the CCS based on control mode (Brine Return or Floor Temperature) and the rink(s) setpoint. In the single rink configuration the CCS will control two brine pumps which are placed in a lead list. Only one pump is allowed to run at any time. If at any time the pump auxiliary contact and the pump output do not match for more then 3 seconds, the pump will be failed, the second pump will be started, and an alarm will be generated. If the second pump also fails the CCS will also fail the compressors. In the dual rink configuration the CCS has the ability to control three brine pumps. Pumps 1 and 2 are dedicated to rinks 1 and 2 while the third pump is a standby unit that must be manually selected and valved to the correct system. The operator selects whether the dedicated pump or the standby pump is supplying liquid to each rink on the pump selection screen. If at any time the pump auxiliary contact and the associated pump output does not match for more then 3 seconds, the pump will be failed and an alarm will be generated. In order to allow the standby pump to then be used the operator must manually select it for use on the appropriate rink. Brine Return Temperature Control In the single rink configuration with the pumps in AUTOMATIC mode the CCS will run the lead pump whenever a compressor is running or available to run (meaning not manually stopped or failed). If the lead pump fails based on its auxiliary input the next pump in the lead list will be started automatically. If both pumps fail the CCS will fail all the compressors. In the dual rink configuration with the pumps in AUTOMATIC mode the CCS will run both assigned rink pumps whenever a compressor is running or available to run (meaning not manually stopped or failed). If a pump fails based on its auxiliary input the other rink s pump will continue to run. If both pumps fail the CCS will fail all the compressors. M&M Refrigeration 7

11 Floor Temperature Control In the single rink configuration with the pumps in AUTOMATIC mode the CCS will run the chiller s lead pump whenever any of the compressors are running (Motor on). In the dual rink configuration with the pumps in AUTOMATIC mode the CCS will run the chiller pumps based on the sequencer control setpoint and deadband. The CCS will monitor the floor temperature input of each rink and compare it to the rinks temperature setpoint. If a rink s floor temperature is above the load deadband and a compressor is running the CCS will run the rink s associated pump. If a rink s floor temperature is below the unload dead band and the sequencer is not controlling on the associated floor temperature value because it is not the worst case, the CCS will stop the rink s pump. Flow Switch Monitoring The CCS will monitor a chiller flow switch input whether in single or dual rink configuration.. If the flow switch does not signify a flow within a user adjustable time delay (1-99 seconds) while a pump or compressor is running, the CCS will generate a failure, shutdown both pumps and the compressors. Chiller Level Control (Option) An option exist for the CCS to control the level in the chiller using a liquid feed solenoid and an OP float. The chiller s level will be maintained by opening and closing the liquid feed solenoid based on the state of the OP float. The CCS will also display the status of the float and the liquid solenoid on the chiller status screen. HPR Level Monitoring (Option) An option exist for the CCS to monitoring a high pressure receiver (HPR) low level alarm float. The CCS will generate an alarm when the float input goes active low. Emergency Stop The CCS continuously monitors an emergency stop input. When the input goes active low the CCS will generate an alarm, shutdown all compressors, and shutdown the condenser. All other auxiliary equipment will be failed or stopped. M&M Refrigeration 8

12 Operator Interface The operator interface to the control system is provided through the LCD display and keypad. Status screens are used to display dynamic data and hot keys are used to obtain entry into the major control functions listed below. Functions which have already been documented in other CCS manuals will be noted and referenced. The screen may vary slightly from on your system depending on which condenser options are included in your installation. When the state is INCREASING, a stage will be added when the staging timer expires. When the state is DECREASING, a stage will be removed when the staging timer expires. COND SUMP LLCO The current state of the LLCO float: OPEN or CLOSED. COND HEAT COND LIQ TEMP NON CONDENSABLES REFRIGERANT STAGE DEVICE STATE AUX The current state of the condenser heater: ON or OFF The condenser liquid outlet temperature. The current calculated value of the non-condensables. The currently selected refrigerant. The lead list stage number. The list of condenser devices in lead list order. 17 Chiller Status The Chiller status page displays the floor temperature(s), brine temperatures, vessel and pump status for the chiller as shown below. The screen may vary slightly between the single and dual rink configuration.
