2006 Upgrade Kit Summary The Fireplace Xtrordinair wood fireplaces have been updated in 2006 to improve performance in cold environments when the fireplace is not in use. Gasket for the face and a revised blower damper are now included with the fireplace. In addition, a new set of installation requirements is required for those fireplaces being installed in colder environments. Altogether, these updates help eliminate condensation on the face and cold air coming into the fireplace when the fireplace is not in use. This kit includes the new components detailed above. The instructions below detail installation of these components and outlines the new installation requirements. What Causes the Negative Effects Negative Pressure The principle cause of cold air entering the fireplace is household negative pressure. Today s air-tight homes create an envelope that seals air in. Additional factors may create a negative pressure situation, where air is pulled from the outside environment into the fireplace. Exhaust fans (kitchen or bathroom), dryers, and other mechanical means may help create this negative pressure. Also, air leaks near the roof of the home may pull air into the home through the fireplace. The first step in ascertaining negative pressure is to take a pressure reading of the home. This is done with a pascal meter. The relative negative pressure of the home should not exceed -5 pascals. Larger readings indicate a home with excessive negative pressure. The only proven method to reduce negative pressure is to install an air exchanger. This device allows outside air to enter the home after going through a heat exchanger to minimize cold infiltration. A home with significant negative pressure may not require an air exchanger, but without one, the home will always be susceptible to air infiltrating the fireplace. Excessive Humidity The second negative effect is related to humidity. Often homeowners will turn their humidistat (or humidifier) to a level that is much too high, leading to excessive condensation on the face. By turning the humidistat down (or humidifier off) the condensation on the face may be eliminated. Who Must Follow the new Installation Requirements The map to the right details the area of the nation most impacted. If you live in the area depicted in black, you must follow the installation requirements outlined in this document. Page 1 of 3 Printed 3/7/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
2006 Upgrade Kit Requirements for the Homeowner Humidity Make sure the humidistat is set correctly. The chart below details the correct setting for the temperature you are experiencing outdoors. Outdoor Temperature F C Recommended Humidity Controller Setting >+20 >-7 40 Note: If using a humidifier, let the homeowner know that it should be shut off or turned to a lower setting to eliminate condensation. Other Items Make sure the bypass is shut when the fireplace is not in use. Minimize the use of exhaust fans in the home. Installation Requirements There are four items that must be made when installing into a cold environment Cooling Air P Trap (Both 36 and 44 Elite) When installing the cold air ducts, make sure to include a P trap in the design (see the illustration below). This helps slow cold air from circulating through the cooling air chamber. Min. 24" Max. 48" Min. 24" Max. 48" Fireplace Xtrordinair Page 2 of 3 Printed 3/7/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
Locate the Blower in an Internal Location (44 Elite Only) 2006 Upgrade Kit The blower housing may be located on an internal or external wall. In a cold environment, we now require that the blower be positioned on an internal wall (do not place it inside a garage or other area that may circulate fumes). This eliminates any chance of any outside air being drawn into the convection chamber from the blower location. Exterior Fireplace Internal Blower Interior of Home Exterior Wall Fireplace Exterior Exterior Wall External Blower Interior of Home NOTE: Because the 36 Elite is designed to draw some combustion air from the blower duct, the blower housing may not be internally located for this model. Weight the Blower Damper (36 Elite Only) The blower housing includes a damper near the location where the air is forced through the duct. This damper helps slow air from entering the convection chamber when the blower is off. Follow the directions under Weighted Damper Installation Instructions to install the weight onto the blower damper. Insulate the Faceplate Area (Both 36 and 44 Elite) The fireplace firebox has a direct connection to the outside environment through the chimney flue. To minimize any cooling that may conduct through the faceplate (and the air channel behind it), follow the directions under Faceplate Insulation Instructions to insulate the faceplate area. Page 3 of 3 Printed 3/7/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
Faceplate Insulation Instructions Packing List (4) Sections of 1/16 Fiberglass Insulation (for insulating the face from the fireplace) (2) 4 x 46 Sections of ½ thick insulation (for insulating the zc can near the face) Installation 1. Remove the doors and face from the fireplace 2. Place the face, front side down, on a non-scratching work area. 3. Attach the 1/16 fiberglass face gaskets as shown in the illustrations below. Peel the backing off the double-backed tape on the top (arched) piece of gasket. Make sure to leave the tape attached to the gasket (use a knife if necessary). Attach the gasket onto the back of the face (note how the holes on the gasket line up with the holes on the face). The 36 is pictured the 44 installs in a similar fashion. Attach the side gaskets in the same fashion, making sure the holes in the gasket line up with the holes on the face. On the 36 you will need to trim the excess gasket on the upper corners (the 44 does not require trimming). Attach the lower gasket in the same fashion, making sure the holes in the gasket line up with the holes on the face. On the 36 you will need to trim the excess gasket on the lower corners (the 44 does not require trimming). Page 1 of 2 Printed 6/6/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
Faceplate Insulation Instructions 4. The cooling air channel near the face should be sealed with the included ½ thick insulation. The channel is the area between the galvanized steel can and the black steel firebox. Follow the instructions below. NOTE: If fiberglass insulation is present in this area, remove it prior to installing the insulation. NOTE: Gaps between the fireplace and the surrounding materials (non-combustible facing and hearth) must be sealed (use non-combustible insulation or high-temperature silicone). This reduces air infiltration from the fireplace chase into the room. Fold the insulation in half and tuck it into the cooling air channel along the sides starting at the bottom. Make sure the insulation extends from the base to the upper corner. Do not push it in too far it is best for it to slightly contact the face Continue pushing the insulation in along the top until it reaches the center. Repeat this process for the opposite side. Cut off any excess insulation. 5. Replace the face to finalize the face gasket installation.. Page 2 of 2 Printed 6/6/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
Weighted Damper Installation Instructions Packing List Damper Cotter Pin Installation! Make sure power to the blower has been turned off prior to conducting this procedure (turn the breaker off at the service box). 1. The weighted blower damper replaces the stock damper inside the blower box. Locate the blower and remove the grill and filter. Remove the 4 screws holding the grill in place. Remove the filter (and holder) 2. Remove the 2 screws securing the blower to the blower box. Remove the two screws holding the blower in place. Page 1 of 3 Printed 6/5/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
Weighted Damper Installation Instructions 3. Remove the blower from the blower box and disconnect the molex connector. 4. Remove the cotter pin securing the stock blower damper in place (you may need to use pliers). Slide the cotter pin out and remove the damper. 5. Install the weighted blower damper using the included cotter pin. Bend the cotter pin slightly to secure the damper. Page 2 of 3 Printed 6/5/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
Weighted Damper Installation Instructions 6. Install the blower following the directions below. WARNING: The damper must be installed as shown below for it to operate correctly. Blower SIDE VIEW OF INSTALLED BLOWER Blower Box Cotter Pin Blower Damper When installing the blower you need to hold the damper open slightly. The bottom of the damper must fit over the opening on the blower box. 7. Turn the service breaker on. You may wish to test blower operation by removing the face and using a suitable jumper wire to enable the circuit at the thermodisk. Page 3 of 3 Printed 6/5/06 Travis Industries, Inc.
