5 Your free trees are here! Please unpack your live trees straight away to give them the best chance to thrive. If you are not planting immediately: Store in a cool, dry and frost-free place (such as a shed or garage) Spray the roots with a fine mist of water Heel the saplings into a single hole in the ground in their bunches, until they re planted out. After planting: Use spirals and canes or guards and stakes to protect your young trees from rabbits, hares and deer. Weed each spring to reduce competition for moisture and nutrients (don t forget to pull up any grasses growing inside your tree guards). Glyphosate will kill weeds without harming wildlife or the wider environment. To use, spray the ground around the base of each tree to create a weed-free ring approximately 1m in diameter. Don t want to use chemicals? Use a mulch such as bark chips, squares of old carpet or straw around each tree to suppress weeds. Use plenty of straw or bark chips to prevent the mulch being blown away by strong winds or dispersed by wildlife, and top up annually. Watering shouldn t be necessary as your trees will adapt to the natural conditions of your site. If there is a particularly long dry spell and you do want to water, saturate the ground thoroughly to ensure it percolates deep into the soil. We advise against mowing as it can damage the trees and invigorates grass growth, increasing competition for moisture. If some of your saplings don t survive after planting, you re welcome to apply for another pack.
