6 about the Event On November 7-9, 2014, Lan Su Chinese Garden will host the Ninth Moon Floral Design Showcase, Lan Su s first floral design exhibition created in partnership with the Floral Design Institute. Ninth Moon is presented in conjunction with Mum-vember, an annual celebration of the chrysanthemum. Designers may use all floral design styles and forms that utilize fresh floral materials and foliage in their entry. The exhibition is designed to celebrate the beauty and significance of chrysanthemums and recognize the floral art and creative talent of floral designers in the Pacific Northwest. about Lan Su Chinese Garden Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland s greatest treasures and most interesting sites to see while visiting Portland. Lan Su is the result of a collaboration between the cities of Portland and Suzhou, our sister city in China s Jiangsu province, famous for its beautiful Ming Dynasty gardens. Lan Su was built by Chinese artisans from Suzhou and is the most authentic Chinese garden outside of China. Much more than just a beautiful botanical garden, Lan Su is a creative wonder a powerfully inspiring experience based on a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition that melds art, architecture, design and nature in perfect harmony. 8 Event Rules & Design Requirements Design elements & materials The floral design showcase is part of Mum-vember, Lan Su s month-long, outdoor chrysanthemum display. All floral designs should reflect the beauty and significance of the chrysanthemum. Each design must follow these defined elements: All designs are required to include chrysanthemums. Fresh flowers, foliage, branches, fruits, vegetables, mosses, and fungi may also be used as well as dried and/or preserved mosses, lichens, fungi, branches, vines, bark and raffia. Flowers, foliage, fruits, or vegetables made of silk, fabric, plastic or other faux materials may not be used in the design. Rare, endangered or threatened species may not be used. If found in a final design, the design will be removed from the show. Note: it is the designer s responsibility to determine if all species used in the design are considered rare, endangered or threatened. Lan Su Chinese Garden and the Floral Design Institute s jurors and staff will use the State of Oregon s list of threatened, endangered and candidate species located at statelist.aspx for reference. All fresh materials must have a water source sufficient for keeping the materials alive and looking good for a minimum of 48 hours. Water sources may include any type of vase or container made of any type of material providing that they are appropriate to the design and do not leak. Water sources may include but are not limited to: traditional glass or ceramic vases, glass test tubes, floral foam, floral foam in holders or cages, and colored floral foam. All floral arrangements will be installed on traditional Chinese furniture with glass tops. Designs may include non-organic materials consistent with the construction and theme of the design including, but not limited to: fabricated metal, rock, stone, sand, clay, wire, rope, wood, canvas, fabric, plastic and glass, as long as these materials do not damage Lan Su Chinese Garden s furniture, buildings and/or surroundings. Designs fading prior to event close will be removed from the exhibition. No candles or any flames closed or open of any type will be allowed in any design. No elements requiring an electrical hookup will be allowed. Jury & Judging Criteria The Jury is comprised of five professionals with extensive experience in floral design as well as expertise in a broad spectrum of fine arts. Floral Design Institute will assist the jury in the presentation of entries and evaluation of adherence to exhibition rules and design requirements.
