2 Association News JULY GCMG MEETING Fall Vegetable Gardening Deedy Wright, Vegetable Garden Specialist and member of the GCMG Association, presented the July program at our monthly meeting. Deedy s program included a handout of her slides and an over view of fall vegetable gardening for the beginning vegetable gardener, what she referred to as the abc s of vegetable gardening. Her message was pick a sunny spot (6-8 hours of sunlight), grow only what you like and what you have time to take care of, plant where there is good drainage and provide a fence to keep out pests. She suggested several resources for the gardener and highly recommended the Texas A&M website: She also encouraged using the GCMG helpline at or the Guadalupe AgriLIFE Extension website Deedy recommended a small raised bed to start, discussed soil, composting, mulching, crop rotation, and planting the right plant at the right time. She briefly reviewed the fall vegetables including planting time, spacing, stress causes, ways to save space, thinning, varieties and fertilizer. Last she talked about pests and disease, showing pictures of problem pests and disease and recommended treatment. Deedy is an organic gardener. Her bonus tips: start small, think ahead/plan ahead (are you going on vacation, who will water?); be realistic, expect success and failures: and keep records, ie favorite varieties, planting dates, rainfall. Article submitted by Sandy Foss, photos by Marvin T Taylor Mary Styblo won the raffle of $23.50, and Cynthia Lyssy won the gift certificate. REFRESHMENTS The July Refreshments were provided by Marilyn Anderson, Ramonita Cardona, and Sandy Foss. Thank you for the great snacks. Meeting room was set up by Diane Lippe and Mary Styblo Treva Hicks, Refreshment Volunteer Coordinator 2

4 (President s Corner - Continued from Page 1) Please take a moment to turn in your Volunteer Hours and participate in the Volunteer Recognition Program. **A Rose Note** The end of August and into the first week of September is the perfect time to prune your roses back one-third. This face lift stimulates new growth for the October flush of blooms. Roses love to be fed, so give them 1-2 cups of organic fertilizer and water thoroughly. Rose Quote-A ROSE WITHOUT THORNS CONVEYS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!! Peggy Jones, , pljones@swbell.net Junior Master Gardener Program Lo-Ra Dick reported that Rodriguez Elementary School has 20 new raised beds, and need GCMGs to help. This will be a recess activity. Seguin Christian Academy wants to get some raised beds started. Lo-Ray is also working with St. James Catholic School on an afternoon garden club. REMEMBER TO TURN IN YOUR HOURS Speakers Bureau Please let me know when you take any Specialist Training so that I can help you get the required Hours for your Certification. 5 FUTURE PROGRAMS September - Kathleen Scott, Hummingbird Hotspot October - Liz Palfini, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Weeding Through Heirlooms, Historic and Just Plain Good Old Days Gardening Propaganda. How to make informed consumer garden choices November - Paul Johnson, Texas A&M Forest Service, Proper Tree Pruning December - GCMG Christmas Party Thanks to Jeff McKee for arranging these wonderful programs. The Green Team will meet once a month on the first Monday at 8 am at the City of Seguin Annex on North River. Call Hughlene Micheli for more information. Gardening with Kids You can help make the gardener of the future! Nothing is more exciting than watching children digging in the dirt and watching plants grow. Watch them taste veggies and herbs as well as smell the native flowers. They learn so much from the activities and develop gardening skills that will last a life time! Master Gardener Iris Seale leads a gardening program at La Vernia Primary School working with the Gifted and Talented students. This primary school is for Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd graders ages 5-8. Because of the success of Iris s work and the hands on approach of new school guidelines, the school is expanding the gardening program and adding 7 raised beds. They have the funds to prep the area, build the raised beds and add the soil. The beds will be ready by September. There are 13 teachers that want to participate in this program. Iris is going to meet with the teachers and help them get started using some of the Junior Master Gardening activities and Square Foot Gardening, but Iris cannot do this alone. Master Gardeners Patti Zgabay and Helena Torralvo have already volunteered to help with this. Can you step up to the plate? Master Gardener volunteers are needed to support this program - One per teacher if possible. This will be a project that will be during the school day; not after school. Iris says parent involvement in this school is high. So more than likely there will be a lots of parents supporting these teachers also, but Master Gardeners are needed. Background checks will be required through the school system at no expense in addition to the MG background check. ID s will be issued to be worn when on school grounds at all times. If you can help please contact Iris Seale at or iseale@gvec.net or Peggy Jones or pljones@swbell.net 5

8 Guadalupe County Community Garden Schulz Nursery is now our corporate sponsor so GCMG can buy potting soil, weed killer, etc. at cost. If they have broken bags, they will donate to us. They also donated 20 pounds of seeds for the Guadalupe County Fair. The teenage youth probationers have been helping at the garden. Five adult probationers will be working up to 10 hours a month each. One of the probationers is a Master Electrician and will install electricity to the garden. When the trenches are put in, a crew of 10 probationers will be at the garden to help. Dale Odvody will get the green house in working order. YMCA Summer Camp Visitors to the Garden: Thirteen 9-14 year olds along with 3 adults from the Schertz YMCA came by the gardens to see how the vegetables are harvested. 9 Updates from Ann Odvody 7/2 It was a beautiful morning in the garden.-.no heat and low humidity. We sure got a lot accomplished. We all pitched in and got the harvesting done. Then Terri did the recording and went on to getting the garden area tidied. Dale worked weeding around the pavilion. Tristan, Will, Debbie and I headed out to the old test beds to clear the first two for Mary s pumpkin patch. We got it cleared and the area looks much better. I have not provided stats for harvests in a while, so here they are: 24 June...48 pounds 7 ounces, 27 June pounds 1 ounce, 2 July pounds 13 ounces. The total for the year is 1,374 pounds 11 ounces. We now have watermelons, cantaloupe and okra we are picking. Please remember, workdays are now Tuesdays and Fridays. 7/9 We got a little rain (.3 of an inch) yesterday, which perked things up a bit and made the weeds easier to pull out of the mulch. Tristan, Terri and Dale did the harvesting. Mary finished planting her pumpkin patch. I weeded. We won t even mention the heat. To catch up on the harvest totals, we had 85 pounds 1 ounce on Friday, 5 July, and 74 pounds 12 ounces today. That brings our total for the year to 1,534 pounds 8 ounces. We have added another stand up bed to the garden, which we will be setting up and filling Friday. Dale will also be installing a drip irrigation system to Mary s pumpkins. 7/16 We all got RAINED on this morning, but we are not complaining! It was so much cooler, that weeding was a pleasure and Will, Toni, and I covered a lot of territory. Tristan, Mary and Dale took care of the harvesting and they were very busy. Last Friday our harvest came in at a hefty 92 pounds 12 ounces. Today s harvest was simply amazing at 170 pounds 7 ounces. Watermelon and Armenian cucumbers were the stars. The total this year is 1,797 pounds and ounces. Tomorrow we will have a group of children touring the garden. Mary and Dale will take them around and explain how the garden works and what we are growing. 7/24 Looks like a very hot week in the garden. We are continuing with our effort to get the mulched areas weeded. Will and I are making a dent in it. Tristan, Dillon, and Coty helped harvesting, mowing and weeding. On the 19th of July, the harvest came to 178 pounds 5 ounces. The harvest for 23 July was 149 pounds 10 ounces. Total for the year has reached 2,125 pounds 10 ounces. We will begin working Saturday on getting the electricity installed. Time to begin preparing beds for the fall planting. 7/26 Good cloud cover and a breeze made for a pleasant morning. We had a crew of young men helping this morning and we sure appreciate all their help with the harvesting and weeding chores. Produce totals for today were 76 pounds 3 ounces. So far, this year we have picked 2,201 pounds 13 ounces. 7/30 - Dale and Will held down the fort today with the help of four teenage boys. Harvesting and weeding took up most of the morning. They picked over 100 pounds of watermelon, which contributed to a total for the day of 190 pounds 9 ounces. So far this year, we are at 2,392 pounds 6 ounces We also had nine volunteers in last Saturday who refurbished the mulch from the west fence to the pavilion. Let s hope that helps to keep down some of the weeds in that area. 12 My Laura Bush Petunias A Texas Super Star. The Laura Bush Petunia is an old-fashioned petunia that reseeds. I am pretty sure I started with a 6 pack of Laura Bush Petunias a few years ago that I purchased at the Festival of Flowers. I planted them in hanging baskets. Just gorgeous on the porch. Somehow I realized that there were seeds that I could gather so I saved the seeds then proceeded to throw them out in a flower bed. This year they jumped from that flower bed to the other side of the sidewalk. Now I have this beautiful show stopper. They may have taken over the sidewalk in front of the house but who cares. I love them. To read about the interesting story on how this lovely plant was developed in our area with the help of Bexar County Master Gardeners go to laurabush.html. Submitted by Peggy Jones.
