We have grown much since our first year, but not have forgotten our purpose. The Festival seeks to educate Highland s youth and adults on our rich citrus heritage and turn of the century lifestyle. There will be numerous vendors, citrus themed coloring, and citrus label design contests. Festival attendees can enjoy a historic home tour, antique & classic car show, costume and citrus growing contests. Live entertainment will be non-stop including three local school bands and featuring Teen Music Workshop and Highland Music Co. The Festival is scheduled for March 25, 2017 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm in the Highland Historic District at the intersection of Palm Avenue and Main Street, up to Pacific Street. Re-Pete and the Public Services Division are gearing up for this year s event. We could not be more excited about this year s booth activities. Test your knowledge of recycling, trash and household hazardous waste (HHW) with a fun sorting game. Regardless of getting the question right or wrong, you will still receive a prize for participating. Also get information on how you can prevent stormwater pollution. A representative from the San Bernardino County Fire Department Household Hazardous Waste Program will be on hand to answer all of your Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) questions. For those of you who have home generated sharps, stop by and pick a FREE approved sharps container. Hope to see you at the Public Services Division booth! For more information, please contact the Public Services Division at ext Did you know that your SEWER DRAIN and your STREET (STORM) drain are different?? Sink and toilet water goes into a sewer drain and flows to a wastewater treatment plant before it s cleaned and released into waterways like rivers, lakes, and the ocean. THE DIFFERENCE is there s no cleaning of dirty water before it flows into waterways from street (storm) drains. The dirty water and debris, like grass clippings and leaves, can hurt fish, plants, and other aquatic life by polluting the water where they live. Ideas to Prevent Street (Storm) Drain Pollution: Sweep driveways clean instead of using water Minimize the amount of fertilizer you use Eliminate piles of grass, leaves, and other debris in the street Adjust sprinklers to prevent leaking water from flowing into the street Go to a car wash where water is cleaned before it goes into waterways Keep items like oil and chemicals out of gutters and storm drains Use cat litter to clean up oil on driveways and sidewalks Clean up after your pets and dispose of waste in a garbage can or toilet

3 P a g e 3 Attention Highland Residents ~ Household Hazardous Waste Every year millions of people throughout the country use billions of needles, syringes, and lancets also called sharps to manage medical conditions at home. California Health and Safety Code defines "home-generated sharps" as hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications derived from a household. Finding ways to safely dispose of used medical sharps is an important public health priority. Since sharps can no longer be disposed of in the trash, those who use sharps must be aware of proper disposal methods to avoid haphazard disposal habits and accidental exposure to used sharps. Although needle-stick injuries are occupational hazards for sanitation, housekeeping, and janitorial workers, children and pets are also at risk for being stuck by improperly discarded used sharps. The San Bernardino County Fire Department through their Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility offers a sharps program that provides a safe, easy and free method for residents to dispose of their used sharps. Residents can pick up a container, return it when full and get a new container. Members of the community, including businesses, schools, churches and community organizations are invited share a favorite food dish with us during our potluck lunches. All lunches begin at 12:00 noon with potluck preparation beginning at 11:00am. Please join us at one or all four of the following potluck lunches! Join us this month for our Community Blood Drive! The drive is taking place on Monday, March 27th from 1:30pm to 6:30pm at the Highland Police Station, Base Line. LifeStream is still experiencing a shortage of all blood types. But, they are in critical need of O-negative blood. In order to increase donations of O-negative blood, they have set up a separate incentive program in addition to the regular incentives that LifeStream offers. They simply must increase O-negative blood supply NOW. Please help LifeStream by donating blood, and by assisting in recruiting donors (share with family, friends and co-workers) to help replenish our local blood supply. THE NEED IS URGENT!
