Kia ora koutou It feels like all of our enviroschools started 2013 with lots of energy and enthusiasm. All sorts of exciting and inspiring mahi has been happening. The enviroschools journey is like an awa and it s always more fun when everyone is in the rapids paddling along together. Apologies if your cool activity has been missed out. It often depends on whether we bring a camera along or not! Please send snapshots of your activities to Kauri as she would love to include them in the next newsletter. 3 "Growth" at Makaraka "GROWTH - new beginnings" was last terms concept at Makaraka School, "with learners involved in interesting and valuable learning experinces" says Paul Saddler, Principal of Makaraka School. A "Makaraka Growth Tour" of local businesses with family connections to the school included the Native garden nursery, Power Machinery and Makaraka Veges where all aspects of growth were discussed. Seeds and plants were grown, a larger worm farm was created, sprouts grown were used to make "monster sandwiches", and the school values were recreated and are being shared with the whole school through drama. Exploring the Atua at Mangapapa School Every year the Yr 6's of Mangapapa School create an art piece with art teacher Mrs Griffi n which is gifted to the school as a taonga. The 2012 Yr 6's created 3 triangular pou depicting some of the M ori Atua, nestled between tikouka trees in the front of their school. Through exploring the creation story and the Atua, Yr 6's brainstormed how they could create an art piece that represented the Atua. "These are an expression of what our school stands for in its culture of learning through a deep and broad curriculum that appeals to the minds of our children" says principal Ian Hunter. Students Rylee and Kyle say "its cool having these colourful and detailed M ori designs which are really attractive at the front of our school". Te Kura o Whatatutu have also created corrugated iron art pieces representing the Atua which have been strategically placed around the school in their places of connection with their environment. Reflection Refl ections/ Pumahara are being explored this term at Te Wharau relfl ecting on the silver paragrah and Mangapapa refl ecting on at Bronze. This is an awesome opportuity for your school to refl ect on it journey towards sustaianbilty and to recognised all the brilliant mahi that has been happeing. 4 What's coming up? Order vege seedlings from Kirsty or Kauri ready for Maara Kai Masterchef. Talk to Kauri about The Women s Native Tree Project Trust donating native trees to your school. Now is a great time to get them in the ground to attract birds, provide rongoa and look marvellous. May 15 th fruit tree workshop, Waikirikiri School, 9:30-2pm. Are you thinking of doing a unit on energy? Kirsty and Kauri have lots of cool ideas and experiments they would love to share with you. Anne Lister (GDC) has some very cool Recycling drop off centre outdoor signs available for interested schools. They are A2 /A1 size and would be perfect in an area where lots of recycling is collated. World Environment Day and Arbor day are both on the 5th June. The international theme for this year s World Environment Day celebrations is Think.Eat.Save. Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub- Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger. - See more at: Students and teachers drop in to the W.E.D Love Your Leftovers, at lunchtime, 11-2pm, 5 th June at TEC, 56 Ballance Street. There will be demonstrations on composting, wormfarming, bolishi, harvest preserving and freezing, plus a food swap of exers seasonal produce. Tair whiti Environment Centre loves enviroschools so don t be shy contacting them. Class visits to the 3 different worm farms are very popular. They have lots of information and displays about what s going on in our local community. You may wish to attend their workshops on anything from permaculture to green cleaning to serious composting. Call them on , drop in to 56 Ballance Street or them on tairawhitienvcentre@xtra.co.nz. Take a picture of your amazing wormfarm and send it to us by May 16 th to win some very cool prizes. Wall Worthy is back for 2013! Keep New Zealand Beautiful is always looking for ways to inspire school students to get involved and take pride in their local community and our campaign Wall Worthy provides a brilliant way for schools to do exactly that by combining History, Art and Design, Social Studies and Geography and making a motivating and inspirational competition throughout the country. Schools need to register their interest for this campaign. Phone or tracy@knzb.org.nz Schools are to submit a design to KNZB by the end of October, winning designs decided in November. 6 Cool recycled projects from Pinterest Bread ties keep take ends easily accessible for immediate use The Mother Earth Reward is back for 2013! The team at Mother Earth has just announced that the Mother Earth Reward will open for entries on 27 May! The closing date is 16 August. As per previous years, 3 schools will receive a $2,500 Reward for a project they have done/ are doing that makes an outstanding contribution to food and healthy eating in the community. Due to the success last year, we will also run the Peoples Choice vote again. Voting is open to everyone and the 10 finalists will be up on the Mother Earth Reward website. This year we have another exciting new category. Most Promising Entry This is a special reward of $1,500 for a school with a project that demonstrates a lot of promise even it s not off the ground yet. There will also be some additional resources as well as the cash as part of this prize more details to be revealed soon!
