The General Meeting January 25th, 7:30p.m. Lakeside Park Garden Center 666 Bellevue Avenue, Oakland, CA Meeting Topic: Plant Hormones and Orchids presented by Ernesto Sandoval Director of the U.C. Davis Botanical Conservatory. Collections Manager, UC Davis Botanical Conservatory Have you ever wondered why your plant has a sudden burst of growth after transplanting? Or how the plant "knows" to grow new parts when pruned or how a cutting knows to make roots? Find answers to these questions and others about why your plants grow the way they do during this Informative but not so technical presentation by Ernesto Sandoval, Director of the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory. Ernesto Sandoval has been wondering and seeking questions to why plants look the way that they do for a long time. Now he explains and interprets the world of plants to a variety of ages and experiences from K- 12 to professionals and Master Gardeners. He regularly lectures to Garden Clubs throughout the year and particularly to Succulent Clubs throughout the State and elsewhere since that group of plants is his particular passion within his general passion for plants. He describes himself as a Jose of all plants master of none. Ernesto thoroughly enjoys helping others, and

2 gardeners in particular, to understand why plants do what they do. Orchids, because of the way they grow are of particular fascination with him. When he was about 13 he asked his dad why one tree was pruned a particular way and another tree another way. His dad answered bluntly "because that's the way you do it. Since then he's been learning and teaching himself the answers to those and many other questions by getting a degree at UC Davis in Botany and working from student weeder/waterer to Curator/Manager over the last 24 years at the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory. He's long left the "mow blow and go" monoculture landscape gardening world and has immersed himself in the world of polyculture and biodiversity by growing several thousand types of plants at the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory, many of them orchids. He loves the technical language but prefers to relate information in more understandable methods of communication! By helping people to understand the workings of plants he hopes to help us better understand how to and why our plants do what they do. President s Message Now that the holidays are over and the New Year is here, we start to get busy with the Orchid Shows that are coming up. We will have a booth at the 65th Pacific Orchid and Garden Exposition on February , please contact Jim Donoso for information. Then we have our show on March 4 and 5, Cymbidium Fiesta. Please contact Sue or myself for information or details on our show. Then there is the Napa Valley Orchid Society Show on March We were able to have our 2017 show cards ready to distribute at our meeting in December (what a great job Sir Speedy did again this year, and they charged less that last year.) Show cards can also be picked up at our January meeting. At our March 22 meeting we have a special gest speaker, Scott Barrie of Barrita Orchids in Australia. Due to our special speaker at the March meeting the Ice Cream Social will be moved to the April meeting. I want to thank the members and friends that attended the 2017 Holiday Party and Auction. We had lots of fun and Jeff Trimble did a great job of being our auctioneer. We had a variety of Cymbidiums entered for auction and the club raised over one thousand dollars. Don't forget its time to renew your membership. Hope your Cymbidiums are happily growing and that they will be ready for all the up- coming shows. Its with great sadness that a long time member of the Napa Valley Orchid Society, Vince Brown passed away on January 3,2017. Vince was the plant doctor for Napa and did security for the POE. Vince was involved with many of the orchid societies in the area. He will be missed by all of us that knew him. j Cheryl

Notes from the last Meeting and Beyond Meeting Refreshment Table - We have appreciated the great job Helga has been doing setting up the refreshment tables for ALL of us to enjoy each month. With many club jobs on her plate (Treasurer, Membership, Auction collection), Helga is stepping away from the monthly Refreshment Table setup and cleanup. If you can help with this tradition to our meetings contact a Board member. FYI At our Holiday Auction 2017 we grossed $1,016 and netted $ after sales taxes. Newsletter editor job is available. Computer experience is necessary. Contact a Board member if you are interested. Contact Nikki J. for more information about the job. We have 2000 color show cards to publicize our show in March. Ed asks that members make an extra effort to personally invite their friends, families, neighbors,

4 and anyone else. He often goes around town and puts our show cards on porches of people who have cymbidiums showing. Let's push the show cards!! Club Activities, Speakers, Topics What would you like to see and what could we do to make our club more interesting? See a Board member to offer suggestions. Monthly Cymbidium Checklist from AOS January, February We are well into the flowering season now. Outdoor growers should be cautious of freezing temperatures. Damage starts to occur below 30 F. Be diligent about tying the inflorescences for best arrangement of the flowers. Also watch closely for slugs and snails.
