8 GREENHOUSE IDEAS Aquaponic Greenhouse Aquaponics: an agricultural system that combines aquaculture (raising fish or other aquatic animals) with hydroponics (raising plants in water). The system creates a symbiotic relationship (a mutually beneficial relationship) between the fish and the plants: Like any animal, fish create waste as a result of their digestion. In a traditional fish farm or aquarium, these wastes must be mechanically filtered out of the system. In an aquaponic system, the plants are used as the filtration system. The plants use the fish waste as an organic nutrient source and through this process, clean the water so that it can be returned to the fish pool for reuse. Fish Pool Hydroponic Vegetable Beds After filtration, fish water is pumped into sloped vegetable beds. Vegetable plants absorb nutrients from the water as it flows down the slope, eventually returning to the fish pool. Production Greenhouse Production greenhouses can grow a wide variety of crops on a year-round basis. A production greenhouse could include raised beds (with or without wooden frames), containers, and vertical gardening components. Vertical gardening can be as simple as string or wire trellises used to support vining crops, wire netting, and hanging pots. It can also include more complex living walls and hydroponic towers. When growing production crops "in-ground" it is easy to extend the season and increase productivity by including simple tools like inner row covers (shown below) that improve growing conditions and exclude common pests. In-ground raised beds are an efficient way to grow large amounts of vegetable crops Inner row covers keep soil warm and exclude pests Propagation Greenhouse Propagation greenhouses are used to grow large numbers of plants in a relatively small space. As these plants grow, they are planted outside or in another greenhouse to grow to maturity. Propagation greenhouses are typically kept warm and may include lighting. These conditions encourage fast plant growth and allow tender plants to thrive when outside weather conditions are poor. Greenhouses can be heated with a variety of technologies. It is possible to include simple technologies like secondary covers and radiant heating to conserve resources and reduce energy costs. Uncovered propagation table with hot water radiant heat tubing Propagation table with secondary cover to conserve energy Waste vegetable oil (or biodiesel oil) furnace to provide energy for radiant heating RAINIER BEACH IMPROVEMENTS
