2 A message from the director... I believe in the power of art. Not just the power to beautify, to inspire, to spark ideas... but the power of art and the arts community to change lives. Because I ve seen it happen. It s been a decade since Athens Area Habitat for Humanity held its last fine art birdhouse auction, and we re bringing back the event in the spring of We hope that you ll be inspired to contribute your talents for one of the best causes I know of providing housing stability to families on the edge of poverty in our community. Yes, there are cash prizes, and yes, there will be lots of publicity, not to mention food, fun, and fellowship in a beautiful setting. But I know that s not why artists contribute their time, energy, materials, and skills to make events like this possible. They do it because they care deeply about the people and the world around us, and because they understand the fragility of the human condition. I m hoping that you will join us as a contributing artist to the 2018 Ultimate Birdhouse Exhibit & Auction. This booklet is your guide to the event and its mission. Thank you for taking a moment to read it, and I look forward to working with you to make this event a rousing success for decent, affordable housing in our community. 4 How to contribute To particpate in the 2018 Ultimate Birdhouse Exhibit & Auction Confirm your participation with Athens Habitat by October 8th, 2017, using the contact information on the back of this booklet. You may confirm by phone, , or in person. (If collaborating with another artist, please submit both names.) 2. Create a birdhouse, ready for public display by February 14th, Works may be in any material(s) and in any style, and may be fully functional or purely artistic. 3. Contact your fans, friends, and followers so they can check out your artwork on our event webpage. 4. Come to the auction on April 14th. Enjoy the food and fun, watch the bidding on your artwork, and get that great feeling that comes from knowing you ve helped a neighbor in need. The money raised really makes us feel the community support for what we re doing. 5 Prizes & Donations Artists may opt to donate either 75% or 100% of the final bid amount to Athens Area Habitat when confirming their participation. Highest Bid Awards: First - $500 Second - $300 Third - $200 Plaques: Best Design Most original Most creative use of recycled materials 5

6 The event A ballroom auction is the centerpiece of the evening at the Botanical Garden of Georgia, featuring an in-person auctioneer and lively bidding. Tickets are $45 in advance or $55 at the door, and will include food and live entertainment. All contributing artists receive two free tickets for the event. In past years, artworks have been displayed at the Botanical Garden and at business locations around Athens during the week leading up to the event. Athens Habitat is currently in the process of making arrangements for pre-display of the pieces. Details about display locations will be available in early The event will be catered and will include a cash bar. Tickets for the event may be purchased on the Athens Habitat webpage this coming spring. 6

7 Who benefits With the help of our local partners, volunteers, and homeowner families, Athens Area Habitat creates decent, affordable housing for residents of Clarke, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties who cannot currentlly afford market rents or for-profit mortgages. Last year, Georgia Tech and Habitat of Georgia studied the impact of Habitat home ownership on families. What they discovered is a great cause for hope. 98% of Habitat homeowners feel positive about their future. More than 70% are now better able to save money and to pay bills on time. 70% of homeowners used some form of public assistance before moving into their Habitat home. Of these, seven in ten have reduced their need for assistance and nearly half currently use no public assistance at all. 74% are confident they ll send their kids to college. More than 3 in 4 feel safer than before purchasing the home. Four out of five say they feel more secure financially. By contributing to Habitat, you help to build stronger families and communities, now and for generations. 7
