How about planting a garden that attracts butterflies??? Why are butterflies important? Because butterflies are important pollinators, and in doing so, they help transfer pollen grains from plant to plant, which helps produce seeds and fruit. Butterflies are very active during the day and visit a variety of wildflowers. Butterflies are less efficient than bees at moving pollen between plants. Highly perched on their long thin legs, they do not pick up much pollen on their bodies and lack specialized structures for collecting it. Butterflies probe for nectar, their flight fuel, and typically favor the flat, clustered flowers that provide a landing pad and abundant rewards. Butterflies have good vision but a weak sense of smell. Unlike bees, butterflies can see red. In attracting butterflies to your garden, it s important to understand what they want most out of life: nectar. However, if you want to keep butterflies in your yard (and support these declining pollinators), it s essential to include host plants where they will lay their eggs (some butterfly species are fussier than others as to what plants are best); once the larvae hatch, the host plants will serve as food for the developing caterpillars. To encourage butterflies to your garden, it is good to include food for both young (host plants) and adults (nectar plants). A butterfly s wish list also includes sunny open spaces, shelter from the wind, and fresh water. For caterpillar food plants, consider plants like violets, milkweeds and asters. For nectar, butterflies love joe pye weed, ironweed, yellow coneflowers, goldenrods, and brightly-hued asters. Here some other flowers that attract butterflies you probably have at least one of two of them in your yard now: Allium, Bee Balm, Blueberry bushes, Candytuft, Catmint, Cornflower, Goldenrod, Lupine, Mallow, Pansy, Sea Holly, Snapdragon, Stonecrop, Sweet Alyssum, Zinnia.

GFWC TACOMA Invited Peninsula District members To help plant a Pinwheel garden on the lawn of Remann Hall Juvenile Detention Center School along 6th Street in Tacoma. Char Lysne from GFWC Capital (in pink) participated in the planting of over 900 pinwheels. Cars passing by would honk and wave. What a fun project and the weather was beautiful and sunny!

5 Musings from Marilee Hello Ladies, Here it is April and that dreaded time of year - tax time! I just finished mine and hope to get them sent off to California tomorrow. I'm late this year. I try to do it earlier usually because I heard that the earlier you do them the less likely you are to be scammed. Well, I hope I don't get scammed! And I hope you all have gotten this odious task done a long time ago. Coming up this month at our April meeting is the Spring Fling on a Shoestring fashion show. We decided to go shopping on our own at the Children's Hospital Boutique so I hope a good number of you find really nice outfits to model. We need to write a description of our outfits and the amount we spend and it to Taryn before our meeting since she volunteered to be our commentator. It's a fun way to support the children's hospitals. Also this month is the State Convention in Richland on the weekend of April I hope some of you are planning to go. Earth Day is April 22. Lynn Cline will have more on the Disney film celebrating the day and how we can participate. Do you think the showers will continue or will we be getting some of the spring flowers this month? I'm voting for the flowers! Marilee Massari Charlotte April 9 Karen Smith is coordinator for our meals for JBLC Fisher House Meal Train.
