Courses offer the chance to acquire the first essentials of plant drawing and painting. Courses are structured to give students the opportunity to discover and enjoy this form of art. Some individual 1-to-1 attention is given within the freedom of a course approach. Courses take place within the beautiful surroundings of Regent s Park, which offers excellent teaching and practical facilities including access to a diverse range of plants and gardens. Courses are run by Louise O Reilly an illustrator working in a wide range of natural history subjects including plants, insects and birds. Her training includes Botanical Illustration at Oxford and Cherwell College ( ), diploma in Botanical Illustration from the Society of Botanical Artists (2007) and insect drawing at the University of Cambridge Botanical Gardens (2010). She was appointed artist in residence at Borde Hill Garden, East Sussex in 2013, and Mottisfont Abbey, Hampshire in She is a member of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society and is based in a studio in East London.

Each course focuses on plants that are prominent in the garden at that time of year. Students will learn the basic skills required to create a beautiful and accurate botanical drawing, including: Selecting botanical subject matter Accurate line drawing of botanical structures Drawing to scale Composition Tonal sketching and understanding techniques for creating shape and form Colour mixing and use of watercolour washes Surface texture There will be tutor demonstrations, group drawing exercises and class discussions. Reference material of contemporary and historical botanical illustration will be available to inspire and guide on the variety of techniques and skills available to the botanical artist. This three day course will look closely at different leaves and foliage structures and students will develop a watercolour study of a variety of foliage types. This is an opportunity to master the skills of accurately depicting beautiful foliage. You will never feel let down by your leaves again. Autumn Colour Monday 27 to Wednesday 29 October 2014, Students develop a watercolour study of a classic autumn subject and can choose to work either with autumn fruits and berries or to create a study of those empresses of the autumn garden - Dahlias. Both subjects provide the opportunity to work with rich autumn colours and to develop your skills in working with watercolour washes. Line Drawing with Pen and Ink Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 January 2015, Students will undertake observational drawing of a subject of their choice from a range of winter subjects. We will focus on plant structure, which is shown to best advantage during the winter months. Students will have an opportunity to work with pen and ink (pigment liner pens and/or dip pens) and with watercolour washes.

Students wishing to include plant anatomy and dissection drawings can do so. Summer Flowers and Pollinators Monday 11 to Wednesday 13 May 2015, Students will undertake observational drawing and create a watercolour study of a subject of their choice from a range of summer flowers. Subjects will include flowers with many petals such as roses and inflorescences of many small flowers. Students wishing to include an insect study to show the pollinator of their subject may do so. Sketching in the Field Monday 6 to Wednesday 8 July 2015, This is an opportunity to experience the work of a botanical illustrator working in the field. Students will select a subject and undertake sketches in the park (weather permitting) and then work from their sketches in the studio. Students will learn how to create a series of drawings of a plant from which a detailed watercolour study can be created without having to rely on the original subject.
