1 The San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society was organized in Its mission is to promote the study, propagation and public awareness of cacti and other succulent plants. SACXS FACTS April 2018 Volume 30, Issue 4 Newsletter for the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society 2018 SACXS Show & Sale Show News By: Barbara Schulze, 2018 SACXS Show & Sale Chairman The 40 th Annual SACXS Show & Sale is less than one month away. It will take place at the San Antonio Garden Center on April from 9:00 am 5:00 pm daily. Although we had a tremendous turn-out at the March meeting and many volunteers offering to help out, we can use a few more. Please see the attached volunteer sign-up sheet. We mainly need Club Table volunteers to greet guests to our Show & Sale. We could also use some more help with clean-up on Sat. Even though it is not on the list, if you are available on Wed. afternoon, we could use volunteers to help vendors with set-up. Wed., April 25 is the day to drop-off raf le plants and auction plant donations. We will also be setting up Educational Displays. (You can also set-up on Thurs. morning between 8:30 9:00 am.) I will be there all day long with several of the department chairmen so we can prepare the Garden Center for the Show & Sale and assist members and vendors.

2 Plan your schedule and save your money! Starting Thursday, the Garden Center will be bursting with 10 vendors ready to provide you with unique cactus & succulents. Day 1 will be your best chance to locate that must-have specimen, although there will be plenty of good inds on Friday and Saturday. Our Silent Auctions will be held on Thursday and Friday. (See our mobile website for photos of Silent Auction items.) The wild and exciting Live Auctions will be held on Friday and Saturday from 2:00 3:30 pm. There will be unusual succulents and cold-hardy landscape plants available. Every day you can take advantage of these other events: Educational Displays (Entrants are competing for some high dollar prizes this year. Be sure to check out the displays.), SACXS Fiesta medal sales, Kid Zone activities for children, and live demonstrations in the morning. And don t forget that a wonderful lunch will be provided free of charge for all volunteers and vendors on the day they are working. For more information, text sacxs to on your cell phone, then click on the link to go to our mobile website. You can get information about our daily schedule, educational displays, vendors, silent auction items, and SACXS Fiesta medals. Contact Barbara Schulze, barbaralschulze@yahoo.com if you need more information. Auction Committee News It s Show and Sale Time! This is the last update on our Silent Auction inventory of donated items. I m happy to report that several more members have donated items which will make for a great Silent Auction. We can always use more though, so feel free to donate anything you may have plant or gardening related with special emphasis on cacti and succulents. In the last month we have added the following items: A wonderful set of vintage margarita glasses with Saguaro stems A set of 10 cache pots to hold 4 pots.perfect for windowsill displays Two bound volumes (#1 &#3) of Euphorbia Journal

3 Several books for young people about plants and deserts Several pair of cactus earrings Multiple cactus and succulent key rings Handmade pot Cactus Koozie Cactus and succulent coloring book Cactus notebook, figurine, Christmas Ornaments, Suncatchers Chocolates, Salt and Pepper shakers, Fridge magnets, Hand-painted ornament Book of common cacti Saguaro shaped iron wall hook Mint sheet of Sonoran Desert Postage Stamps Porcelain cactus ring holder More wonderful dish gardens It s not too late to contribute!!! Please think about what you can donate for the Silent Auction. We happily accept almost anything related to cacti and succulents and gardening. Your donation needn t be new. In fact, some of our most hotly contested items in the past have been somewhat vintage. It s your creativity and generosity that make the Silent Auction so successful. Last year, the Silent Auction netted almost one-third of the total pro its for the Show and Sale that support all of our programs throughout the year. Check out the pictures. Next month, I ll give you a report of what your generosity netted for the club. Please keep nurturing your little Raf le plants from the October Pot-a-thon and show your club some love and donate to the Silent Auction. Feel free to bring Silent Auction items to the Show and Sale set up day Wednesday April 25 between 10 and 3:30. If that won t work for you, please me at draperl@prodigy.net and we ll work out some other arrangement. If you have a question about whether an item is suitable, just call or and I ll try to help sort it out. It helps the committee a lot to have items early so bid sheets can be prepared. I m working on them now. Thanks in advance for your generosity and support. Linda Draper, Co-Chair, 2018 SACXS Show and Sale Auction Committee
