1 H E A R T O F M I S S O U R I M A S T E R G A R D E N E R N E W S L E T T E R The Heart of Missouri Master Gardeners is a fun, vibrant group that brings together gardeners of all levels by providing engaging educational opportunities and meaningful volunteer projects that enhance and sustain our communities. Daylilies like our sunshine, tolerate our lack of abundance of water, try their best to crowd out weeds, and are relatively disease and pest free. The flowers are a favorite treat for deer, but there are ways to outwit them. There has been a boom in daylily hybridizing, and it is a great backyard gardener hobby as well. 2 Page 2 Heart of Missouri Master Gardener Newsletter Amy Dooley, Program Director, Jefferson Farms HMMG Program Committee is in the process of developing a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate a longterm working relationship with Jefferson Farms allowing support for our group efforts and projects in all three HMMG Focus Areas. Amy Dooley impressed all of us at the May HMMG meeting with her knowledge and enthusiasm for the future endeavors she has planned for Jefferson Farms, and how she would enjoy working with HMMG to accomplish a mission that will benefit all of us, our community, and beyond. Assist with plant a seed days by demonstrating and assist a child in planting a fruit or vegetable seed in a 4 pot they can take home with them. Thank you all so much for coming out on Saturday and helping to improve the landscape around the YEZ building. We planted everything that we brought no easy feat considering the ground was like concrete and it was 95 degrees! The planted areas look pretty much how we envisioned them, in spite of there being more sun on the North side now. But like all landscapes, it will be a work in progress. As long as the kids keep it watered, they can take pride in how nice it looks in a month or so. A special thanks to Wayne Soucie who took the trouble to bring his tiller over and work in the bags of soil and compost that Loretta provided. Without this help, I doubt we would have been able to successfully plant everything. Shovels just wouldn t have worked! Also thank you, Marilyn for bringing so many Stella lilies and planting them [in spite of not feeling well!]. They look great around the sign. You all worked with our teen helpers too, engaging them in garden talk, and learning a bit about them while you worked.
