Objective 1; Criteria 1: Environmental Issue Instruction During the period August 2009 to April 2013, students studied a huge variety of environmental issues, thinking locally, nationally, and globally. Students at all grade levels participated in multidisciplinary, hands-on activities. Here is just a small sampling of subjects covered: Class Activities Completed Pre-Kindergarten Played relay seed to food to plate match up. Teams ran to match the products in order to win the race. Kindergarten Read the Once I was a Cardboard box.. But now I m a book about Polar Bears! Then had a discussion about the endangered animals and reusing items in our lives to make new items we can use each day. 1st Grade Played Where was I grown? a matching game that has students locate where certain foods grow best on a map. 2nd Grade Students researched online the recycling programs available to students and decided which programs we, as a school, should work on this year. 3rd Grade Students studied the water cycle and how pollution affects it, and then drew a diagram on the water cycle labeling each of the major parts. 4th Grade Students learned about how oysters filter the Chesapeake Bay and created artificial oyster habitats. 5th Grade Students camped for two days at Camp Schmidt, learning first-hand about stream ecology, identifying trees, taking interactive nature walks, studying how people harm the environment and how we can help, and much more 6th Grade Students have an erosion experiment that they create and demonstrate the positive and negatives of landscaping around the Laurel area. Whole School We are engaged in daily paper, cans, bottles, ink, cell phones, glue bottles, crayons, keys, soda tabs recycling. We participate in Earth Day projects each year. Last year we created a school garden. Planted in our school garden, monitor them by watering and weeding. Make charts and Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides.

Pre-Kindergarten Students had a few cards on the table to choose from. The table were spaced apart in the classroom. They would select one, then match it to the plant (fruit or vegetable) that it became. Teams ran to match the products in order to win the race.

Kindergarten The teacher read the Once I was a Cardboard box.. But now I m a book about Polar Bears! book to her students. Then the class had a discussion about reusing items in our lives to make new items we can use each day. They also talked about endangered animals. Students then drew pictures of their favorite part of how the box was recycled into a book.

st 1 Grade After several lessons on natural resources, the classes played Where was I grown? a matching game that has students locate where certain foods grow best on a map. Students place foods on the map where they are grown naturally. Foods came from all over the world. Students then planted vegetables in our school s garden, and as shown here, in their classroom!

nd 2 Grade Students researched online the recycling programs available to students and decided which programs we, as a school, should work on this year. Students found several programs and activities that were incorporated in our framework. Recycling old broken crayons by breaking them into small pieces, and then melting them into larger crayons was one activity they completed. They also have fish tanks which they grown different types of algae, and have animals that they take care of and investigate.

rd 3 Grade Students studied the water cycle and how pollution affects it, and then drew a diagram on the water cycle labeling each of the major parts. Students understood that the water cycle is an ongoing process that happens without people even noticing. Students then took the lesson a step further and discussed how pollutants are moved during the water cycle. These pictures show that the students create items from leftover holiday wrapping paper, and of other recycled items.

th 4 Grade Students learn about how oysters filter the Chesapeake Bay and then created artificial oyster habitats. Several artificial reefs were made by the students, that way other animals may enjoy them as well, such as fish, crabs and shrimp. After students raise the Shad fish in the class, they released them into the Potomac River.

th 5 Grade Students camped for two days at Camp Schmidt. Students learn first-hand about stream ecology, identifying trees, taking interactive nature walks, studying how people harm the environment and how we can help, and much more!

th 6 Grade Students create an erosion experiment where they model and demonstrate the positive and negatives of landscaping around the Laurel area. WSSC came to help each grade level with their experiment.

Whole School -We recycle paper, cans, bottles, ink, cell phones, glue bottles, crayons, keys, soda tabs in our classrooms. -We recycle during lunch and snack time. -We participate in Earth Day projects each year. -Last year UMD, Home Depot and our students created a school garden. -These are just some of our ongoing yearly projects everyone participates in and enjoys!

Objective 1; Criteria 2: Professional Development During the period August 2009 to April 2013, teachers and staff at Scotchtown Hills Elementary were involved in professional development and training activities both inside the school and out. Some were led by our teachers; some were attended by our teachers; and some were even taught by our students to our teachers! These activities, workshops, and projects increased staff knowledge of environmental issues, introduced creative instructional strategies, and enhanced environmental literacy. Examples of our activities fulfilling this criterion include: Professional Development Activity (with date) Staff Members in Attendance Staff Meetings always update and inform staff of new green moves our school will take in the next month. All staff members Staff meeting where we painted the playground with a compass rose, and Erath to symbolize the why we are recycling. All staff members. Staff In-service on Wetlands, then student field trip in May All staff members and classes 2010 Staff In-service, then student field trip on Agriculture in Maryland. November 2011 All staff members and classes Working on the Green Ribbon Application for our school. We answered EVERY questions on all 4 pillars. Jennifer Dorris, Jennifer Taylor, Ms.Parker, Ms.Fisher, Ms.Blouvet, Mrs.P, Mrs.Joy, Mrs.Prevost, Mr.Fletcher, Mr.Smith, Ms.Muhl, Ms.I, Mrs.Roller and Mrs.Harvey Professional Development by staff Ms. Latdavone Insyxiengmay completed several classes over the summer to further her personal education on the environment. Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides.

Monthly Staff Meeting We are always updating our staff members on upcoming Green movements that our school will take part in. As a staff, we decide what works and what doesn t work well. We work as a team to make Scotchtown Hills a better place for our students.

Fixing our Playground at a Staff Meeting Staff painting with Green paint to show the students what we protect at Scotchtown Hills, and a compass rose are just a few of the items we painted on our green-top.

Staff had an in-service about wetlands around Maryland with mobile field trips, then the students traveled to the places.

An Agriculture In-Service for staff members about local Maryland farms. Then students went to the field trip.

Green Ribbon Application Our staff members worked hard on this award as a team. We did not win, however, we did make a difference in our school s green footstep! We have a HUGE binder that we used to collect our school s data. We earned a Green Flag through one of the steps in the application.

Objective 1; Criterion 3: Celebration Scotchtown Hills has celebrated our environmental achievements in many ways. Examples of our activities fulfilling this criterion include: Annual Earth Day Celebration Annual Recycled Art Competition Green Flag Program part of National Green Ribbon Garden Opening Ceremony with Mayor, Reporters, UMD, Home Depot, Green Team, school Monthly recycling contests Beautification (Gorgeous Prince George s Day) Green Carnival (all games made from recycled items!) Our school is in the local newspapers and online a LOT! Newspapers such as the Laurel Leader, Laurel Gazette showcase our school s Green Awareness with the community and school children. Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides.

Annual Earth Day Celebration Each year we have a different celebration. We have had a Mr. and Mrs. Earth Day contest, school wide clean up, school wide recycled art projects and more. For Mr. and Mrs. Earth Day, we made crowns from the plastic soda lids and recycled paper!

Annual Recycled Art Competition -All students competed in a school wide art contest made form 100% recycled items. -A winner from each class, and a grade level winner was chosen are showcased each year. -Each year the projects get better and better! -Bags made from tied plastic newspaper bags, robot from a variety of items and much more!

Green Flag Program part of National Green Ribbon Our school completed the Green Ribbon application and earned a Green Flag through a program called the Green Flag Program. We received recognition for our recycling, reusing and reducing, and well as for our IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Program at our school. There are two other areas on flag in which we plan to earn in the following years.

Garden Opening Ceremony Home Depot donated and helped the students build their first vegetable garden, and fruit tree orchard. The University of Maryland Extension Program paired up with our school for their lessons on Growing Healthy Habits. The Mayor of Laurel came to our celebration. Laurel Leader, and Laurel Gazette came to document and post in out local newspapers.

Monthly Recycling Contests The Green Team rewards classrooms who recycle the most electronic devices, cell phones, and ink cartridges. The classes are given a new board game, or new seeds for our garden, or a variety of items that they could select for having the most items to be recycled. This is an example of one of our classroom s recycling centers. This holds, crayons, glue, ink, phones, paper.

Beautification (Gorgeous Prince George s Day) Each year we have a community and school Beautification Day. This is when we clean up around school by getting rid of invasive plants, plant new trees, shrubs and flowers. We also pick up litter and put down new mulch around our school.

Green Carnival All games from recycled items! 2liter bottle bowling, Baby food jar ping pong toss 2liter bottle ring toss Pillow case race Much more!

Objective 2 Best Management Practices

Objective 2; Criterion 1: Water Conservation/Water Pollution Prevention Scotchtown Hills models water conservation in many ways. Each grade level does a variety of projects that they complete on our school s property to help the watershed. The following activities are provided in support of this requirement: Students are planning to paint Don t Litter signs from stencils on storm drains in our neighborhood in April. Students help plant trees around the school to help with our erosion control and storm water run off control. Many classes at Scotchtown Hills pick up litter outside on Earth Day and other days because we know the litter washes into the storm drains and into the Chesapeake Bay. We have water conservation posters in bathrooms, over drinking fountains, and in classrooms. They remind students and staff to conserve water and to teach others ways they can conserve water. Students helped install low-flow faucet aerators on all school faucets. Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides.

Storm Drains Students are planning to paint Don t Dump and Chesapeake Bay Drainage words from stencils on storm drains in our neighborhood in April. We want our community to be as involved in our efforts as we are here at school.

Plant Trees to help run-off and erosion - Students help plant trees around the school to help with our erosion control and storm water run off control. - Classes go to the designated areas and plant a tree, or two to help with our Chesapeake Bay drainage.

Earth Day Activities that help - Many classes at Scotchtown Hills pick up litter outside on Earth Day and other days because we know the litter washes into the storm drains and into the Chesapeake Bay. Litter comes from visitors who use our school, and the community children who do not know better.

Installation of low flow aerators - - We have water conservation posters in bathrooms, over drinking fountains, and in classrooms. They remind students and staff to conserve water and to teach others ways they can conserve water. We installed low flow aerators on all of our faucets around school. We went from 1.5 GPM ( gallons per minute) to 0.5 GPM!! This was part of the Green Ribbon, but it helps our school save water as well. This shows a student placing a new aerator on our classroom sink!

Reduce the amount of water we use. Students helped install low-flow faucet aerators on all school faucets. We went from 1.5 gallons per minute to.5 gallons per minute!! WOO HOO!

Objective 2; Criterion 3: Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling Scotchtown Hills recycles EVERYTHING to save the earth. The following activities are provided in support of this requirement: Scotchtown Hills recycles all paper products, glue bottles, and glue sticks, crayons, soda tabs, old keys, ink cartridges, cell phones, laptops, any electronic devices in every classroom. We recycle plastic and aluminum cans in our hallway bins, at lunch and snack time we recycle capri-suns, chip and cookie wrappers with Terra-cycle, along with any recycled materials in our green City of Laurel plastic bins- that they collect weekly. We use reusable items throughout the day. We have a school wide Trash to Art projects made by all items that were made to be recycled or reused. NO new items were allowed to be used in the project. Staff and students reuse the backs of paper, not just for writing, but for printing and copying, too. Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides. -> Picture shows one of the many recycling bins for cans and bottles located around our school. We have 10 total bins for cans and bottles that we recycle with The Dream Machine/ Pepsi-Co and Waste Management.

Recycling Scotchtown Hills recycles all paper products, glue bottles, and glue sticks, crayons, soda tabs, old keys, ink cartridges, cell phones, laptops, any electronic devices in every classroom. Recycling is important to our students because we want a cleaner and greener tomorrow.

Recycling We recycle plastic and aluminum cans in our hallway bins. We recycle at lunch and snack time. We recycle Capri-suns, chip and cookie wrappers with Terra-cycle. In our green City of Laurel plastic bins- that gets collected weekly, we put all items with a #1-7 on it.

Recycle We try to recycle everything at our school!

Reusable items Our school has a fundraiser that is for recycled bags, lunch bags, and reusable ziplocs. This is the green fundraiser we use We also sell these items to the students. This helps with the amount of garbage we have. Students were given a reusable water bottle and can use it during the school day.

Trash to Art We have a school wide Trash to Art projects made by all items that were made to be recycled or reused. NO new items were allowed to be used in the project. Each grade level had a winner! Each year the projects get better and better.

Do you really need it? Teachers have students use their journals instead of making a million copies. When we do make copies, staff and students reuse the backs of paper, not just for writing, but for printing and copying, too. We have our weekly newsletter ed to parents, and on our website Our PTO also posts information on their website for families :

Objective 2; Criterion 4: Habitat Restoration Scotchtown Hills create and restore habitats not only on land, but also in the water and air. Examples of our projects fulfilling this criterion include: We create artificial oyster reef balls. We raise shad fish from eggs in our classroom and release them into the Potomac River. We made bat boxes and hung them in our school s Nature Path. We do many invasive species removal projects around our schoolyard. Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides. -> This is a picture of when we released the Shad fish we grew.

Oyster Reef Ball An oyster reef ball is an artificial reef made from concrete and other materials. We make the Reef balls because many reefs are being destroyed and the animals house is being taken away. This helps with many animals who live in our Chesapeake Bay. This shows a few students who just finished their reef balls.

Raising Shad Fish We raise shad fish from eggs in our classroom and release them into the Potomac River. This is one of our tanks we had in the classroom.

Bat Boxes We made bat boxes and hung them in our school s Nature Path. This will help give bats a home, and make our path cool.

Invasive Species Removal We do many invasive species removal projects around our schoolyard. We take out the plants that don t belong in Maryland.

Objective 2; Criterion 5: Structures for Environmental Learning Scotchtown Hills has several locations around our school s campus that are made for outdoor and environmental learning. Examples of our projects fulfilling this criterion include: Fruit and Vegetable garden near our playground. Nature trail with two separate seating locations (podium and horseshoe set up) for classrooms to go outside and learn. Woodland Conservation area on our school s campus. Outdoor classroom area with benched seats and areas to write and be creative with staff. Indoor nature trail showcasing our student s green school accomplishments. Documentation in support of these activities is on the following slides.

Fruit and Vegetable garden near our playground. This was built last May, and has been used ever since by all the grades at Scotchtown Hills. Classes some out to have lessons in our garden. Staff has a HUGE binder with lessons that correlate with our state curriculum and touches with EVERY subject, thanks to the University of Maryland Extension Program. Every grade has their own raised garden box to use throughout the school year.

Nature trail with two separate seating locations (podium and horseshoe set up) for classrooms to go outside and learn. Why stay inside on nice days when you are reading about a forest when you can experience it yourself? Why draw a leaf when you can find several kinds on our path? Why write about the sounds of nature if you are not experiencing it first hand? We have several classroom areas around our school that all grades are more than welcome to use. These are a few places on our Nature Trail that can be used to sit and learn outside. The Nature Trail also leads to the river so we can have hands on experiments in science!

Woodland Conservation area on our school s campus. Students can observe the animals that live and eat and play in the Prince George s County Woodland Conservation area located on our school s grounds. We also pick up litter around and in that special area so the animals do not die. Our Nature Trail leads us the the back of this area, so we can see all around the Woodland Conservation Area.

Indoor Nature Trail On rainy days the students have several picture framed events that showcase our school s environmental and green efforts. We even have fossils and minerals, and dinosaur bones donated to our school from a staff member! The release of the Shad fish, Camp Schmidt, Arbor Day, Earth Day, Gorgeous Prince George s Day and more!

Objective 3; Criteria 1 &2: Community Partners Calverton is very involved with the community, both inside and outside the school.
