Welcoming Neighbourhoods is a way to build a culture of community connection, one neighbourly conversation at a time. Help make your neighbourhood a place where people know and help each other, celebrate together, and work as a team to make your community a better place to live. The City of Coquitlam can help you build strong neighbourhoods where: Residents feel more connected to their neighbours. Residents feel safe and more connected to neighbours on their block and in their neighbourhood. Residents get involved in their neighbourhood activities. Residents foster an environment of care for one another. coquitlam.ca/neighbours CityofCoquitlam

City Programs The City of Coquitlam has a number of programs you can participate in that also help you get to know your neighbours! Adopt-a-Street Adopt a street on your own or with a group and keep it free of trash and debris. coquitlam.ca/adoptastreet Adopt-a-Trail Help keep local trails beautiful and litter-free, on your own or with a group. coquitlam.ca/adoptatrail Block Watch This Coquitlam RCMP program encourages neighbours to keep an eye on each other s homes and report suspicious activity to the police. coquitlam.bc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca

Become a Snow Angel Volunteer to help those who have difficulty keeping their sidewalks clear of snow and ice in the winter. coquitlam.ca/snowangels Bad Seed Invasive plants kill native plants and destroy Coquitlam's beautiful natural habitat. We need your help to stop the introduction and spread of garden plants that can be harmful to people, animals and ecosystems. From spring to fall, we have a number of "weed pull" events to help get rid of these plants from our parks and city spaces. coquitlam.ca/badseed

Host a Block Party A block party is a gathering of neighbours who want to connect and celebrate their community. It's a great way to get know your neighbours, build new friendships, and enhance the safety and awareness of your neighbourhood. coquitlam.ca/blockparties City-Wide Garage Sale Get together with your neighbours and participate in the City-Wide garage sale held each spring. The City will promote registered garage sale participants at no cost. coquitlam.ca/garagesale Join Us at Neighbourhood Nights Join your neighbours at this series of free family events held in parks across Coquitlam once a week throughout the summer. coquitlam.ca/neighbourhoodnights

Park Spark Lend your expertise or your experiences to help bring a local park alive. coquitlam.ca/parkspark Inspiration Garden & Community Gardens Stop by the City s teaching garden and learn about local plants or participate in a workshop. Check out the City s community gardens and see what your neighbours have growing! coquitlam.ca/inspirationgarden

Get Involved in Your Neighbourhood If you ve moved to a new neighbourhood or are looking for opportunities to get more involved, here are some ways to get started: Say Hi to your neighbours and introduce yourself. Search the Internet to see if your neighbourhood has any active groups or a Facebook page to join. Visit your local library to see if there are any activities going on in your neighbourhood. Volunteer for a local organization or cause you feel strongly about. Volunteering is a great way to meet others with similar interests and make your community a better place. Plan a group activity such as a block party, yard sale or donation drive. Talk to your neighbours or circulate flyers to get others involved. See if there is something you can start up like a neighbourhood association, Facebook page, babysitting co-op, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Good Neighbours Make Great Neighbourhoods! Bylaws are the rules that shape how our community lives. Keep your property looking nice including mowing the lawn, maintaining the garden and buildings and repairing fencing. Be mindful of noise that may annoy your neighbours including music and barking dogs. Do not litter in common spaces, our parks and outdoor spaces this includes cigarette butts. Help mobility-challenged neighbours with tasks like mowing their lawn, setting out their garbage carts, or shoveling their walkway when it snows. Do not throw household trash into park or street garbage cans. Ensure your dog has a licence and only let it play free in an off-leash area. Don't forget to pick up your dog's waste and dispose of it in the trash. It only takes a little effort to be a good neighbour. coquitlam.ca/goodneighbours
