2 BUILD A RAIN BARREL WORKSHOP Thursday, June 9, PM-8PM Hillsborough Municipal Building Multi-Purpose Room 379 South Branch Road Hillsborough, NJ A rain barrel is placed under a gutter s downspout next to a house to collect rain water from the roof. For registration ($45 per barrel) and more information about rain barrels, please visit The barrel holds about 50 gallons of water which can be used to water your lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees. The fee for this workshop is $45, which includes the barrel and all the materials. Rain water harvesting can help save money on your water bill, prevent basement flooding, and reduce flooding in local rivers and streams. Participants will be shown step by step how to build their own rain barrel and learn how to install it at home. This workshop is part of a research project conducted by Rutgers Cooperative Extension to determine whether rain barrels encourage adoption of other environmental best management practices by residents. 5 Rain Barrel Train the Trainer Program July 13, 2011 Considering starting a rain barrel program in your community? Want to incorporate rain barrels into your organization s educational activities? Rain Barrels are a great tool for promoting water conservation and reducing stormwater runoff. The Rain Barrel Train the Trainer program is for environmental commission members, educators, municipalities, garden clubs, and environmental organizations interested in learning how to teach others about the environmental benefits of rain barrels. When: Wednesday, July 13th, :30-8:30pm Where: Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County Davidson Mill Pond Park 42 Riva Ave. in South Brunswick, New Jersey Material covered at the workshop: How to get barrels Tools and materials needed to build a rain barrel Rain barrel installation examples Methods for painting rain barrels Preventing mosquitoes, and other maintenance issues Education on water conservation and stormwater management Brochures, fact sheets and other resources for educating the public and promoting your program Participants will receive a packet containing all workshop materials and presentations on hard copy and CD so they can easily put the information to work. Participants will have the opportunity to build a rain barrel for use in their community.
