5 Situation The White House is situated in a secluded position in the delightful and scenic village of Osmington. The South West Coastal Path skirts the village and within and around the village there are magnificent views for both walkers and riders. Some 500 yards from The White House there is walking access to the little used beach of Osmington Bay. Within the village itself are many beautiful stone and thatched cottages, as well as a dairy, shop and tea room. There are also three easily accessible pubs nearby, The Sly Fox in Osmington itself, The Smugglers in Osmington Mills and The Springhead in Sutton Poynz. The County town of Dorchester, with a choice of supermarkets, including two Waitrose stores, is some 7 miles distant. Mainline access to London Waterloo (2½ hours) is available from Weymouth and nearby Moreton, and ferries to France and the Channel Islands operate out of Poole. Osmington has a vibrant community life with many social and musical events, as well as a variety of clubs which meet regularly in the well appointed Village Hall. For those who are keen or aspiring sailors, there is nearby Weymouth with its superb marinas and the National Sailing Academy at nearby Portland. Historical Information The White House is understood to have been constructed in around 1815 and was said by some to have been provided for an illegitimate son of George III. Latterly there have been a number of notable owners, including the brother of Earl Haigh and later, Polish born Rear Admiral Josef Bartosik, the first non-british national ever to be appointed to Flag rank in the Royal Navy. Description The White House is a beautiful Regency house which is Listed Grade II as being of architectural or historical importance. Built with most attractive rendered elevations under a slate roof the house has 2 magnificent rounded bays with curved sash windows each side of the front door. The famous architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner ( ) described it as a buxom house. The rooms are elegantly proportioned with some delightful cornicing, and as well as fine sash windows there are some attractive fireplaces. The present owners have undertaken a sympathetic programme of improvement to the house. A superb bespoke kitchen has been installed including a gas fired Aga with attached Aga Pod. There is a delightful extension incorporating a study and second cloakroom. A new garage block was built with cavity walls and double glazed windows to the ground and boarded first floor. The Coach House, lying on the eastern boundary and with its own independent access from Church Lane, has been superbly converted to a well appointed and completely separate two bedroom dwelling. 15 Outside A pair of remote controlled and timer operated timber gates set within entrance pillars open on to a gravelled driveway. This leads to the front of the house and sweeps round a central lawned island with flower beds, shrubs and attractive fountain. The garden has been laid out for minimum maintenance with attractive expanses of lawn and a variety of trees and shrubs. It has a comprehensive irrigation system. There are extensive garden lights, some power points and automatic security lighting. Within the grounds is an old well, and on the eastern side is a large old disused underground water cistern. On the western side of the house is a large paved terrace adjoining the kitchen/breakfast room. Nearby is an attractive summer house.
