3 MEETING MINUTES High Rise Building Safety Advisory Committee February 14, 2014 Teleconference/Web Meeting 1. Call to Order. The teleconference/web meeting was called to order by Chair, Jim Quiter, at 11:00 am EST. on Friday, February 14, Introduction of Attendees. Council on Tall Buildings & Urban Habitat The Skyscraper Safety Campaign 3. Approval of Minutes. The minutes of the 2013 November 20 meeting were approved and distributed with no modifications. 4. Update from Kristin. EAP Guide - The EAP guide was distributed to the committee a few weeks back. It is also available for the public to download for free at Kristin will be working with NFPA social media connections to promote the document through blogs, etc. Kristin will also be reaching out to appropriate interest groups and businesses to announce the release of the document. At the May meeting, Kristin will report to the committee on the traffic the document receives online. Website We have congregated all of NFPA s high rise building resources on one page, In the coming weeks we will be migrating all of the committees documents to the page as well, in lieu of the current e-committee pages. Fire Protection Research Foundation A new report was released by the Fire Protection Research Foundation regarding fire safety of tall wood buildings. You can access the report at stallwoodbuildings.pdf 5. Develop action items for new topics. The members on the call agreed that a guide for developing emergency action plans is needed for residential occupancies (hotels and apartment buildings in particular) in light of recent fire events. A portion of the upcoming May meeting will be devoted to developing a plan for this document. The committee is asked to think about the following topics and the role that the HRBSAC committee can play in these areas. Elevators for occupant evacuation and firefighter New Construction Techniques (Use of timber in high-rise construction, modular construction, speed of new building construction) Mixed use buildings (Vertical Cities) Page 3 of 15

5 6. Other Business A member of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) will be present at the May meeting to discuss their current high rise building activities. A NITMAM was received for NFPA 101 and NFPA 5000 regarding the new stair monitoring language. Kristin will keep the committee updated on the specifics of this motion as it moves forward in the process. 7. Next Meeting The next meeting will be held May 13-14, 2014 at the Renaissance Blackstone Hotel in Chicago, IL. 8. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned by Chair Jim Quiter at 11:45 am EST.
