These devices are offered as a surface-mount alternative to the radial-leaded TR600 series. 2 Fundamentals of PolySwitch overcurrent protection devices The problem of overcurrents An overcurrent is an abnormally high current that has the potential to damage sensitive telecommunication circuits. Overcurrent conditions may be caused by lightning, power cross, or power induction surges during normal system operation. Customer premise and network equipment that are not designed to withstand these surges may be permanently damaged, affecting proper system operation and personnel safety. Coordinated, resettable circuit protection Traditional methods of protecting telecommunications equipment employ metal-oxide varistor (MOV) technology for overvoltage protection and fuse/fusing resistors for overcurrent protection. To minimize system downtime and reduce equipment operating costs, SiBar and PolySwitch devices provide a coordinated, resettable alternative to protect today s sensitive electronic circuits from telecommunication hazards. SiBar devices crowbar from a high to low impedance state in response to an overvoltage condition. For power cross and power induction faults, PolySwitch devices use nonlinear polymeric PTC (positive temperature coefficient) technology to rapidly switch from a low to high impedance state in response to an overcurrent surge. Once the source of the fault condition is removed, properly selected PolySwitch and SiBar devices reset to allow system operations to continue. PolySwitch TS600 devices provide a surface-mount complement to the radial-leaded TR600 product family. These resettable overcurrent protection devices assist equipment designers in meeting global telecommunications protection standards while lowering equipment service and warranty costs. These hazards can travel through the network and local loop, resulting in equipment damage and service loss. A PolySwitch overcurrent protection device, properly coordinated with a SiBar thyristor surge protector, will protect against these faults, minimizing equipment damage and improving customer satisfaction. For installations that require compatibility with automatic pick-and-place equipment, and for reflow assembly processes, the TS600 series incorporates the protection benefits of the TR600 series in a surface-mount package. Network equipment TS RA devices have been designed to assist network equipment manufacturers in meeting the stringent requirements of Bellcore GR-1089, UL1950 3rd Edition, ITU-T Recommendation K.17, and ITU-T Recommendation K.20. A PolySwitch device should be chosen to prevent nuisance tripping in the application and to protect downstream components from damage. Review the chart to the right to confirm that the TS600 device meets the performance requirements of your system. For telecommunication applications, the TS600 has been designed to protect the 1.6-amp line simulator fuse in response to a power cross and induction surge. The following guidelines will assist in the proper installation of the device: Recommended reflow methods: IR, vapor phase oven, hot air oven. Always preheat the device to prevent excessive thermal shock and stress. Recommended maximum paste thickness is 0.25 mm (0.010 inch). Profile may vary among different soldering systems, depending on board density and types of components used. Devices may be cleaned using standard industry methods and solvents.
