1 SECTION FIRE-SUPPRESSION PIPING PART1 -GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general prov1s1ons of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. B. Related Sections: The following Sections contain requirements that relate to this Section. 1. "Basic Mechanical Requirements." 2. "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods." 3. Division 16 Section "Fire Alarm Systems" for alarm devices not in this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes fire-suppression piping and equipment for the following building systems: 1. Automatic wet-type, fire-suppression standpipes and branches for sprinklers. 2. Wet-pipe, fire-suppression sprinklers, including piping, valves, specialties, and automatic sprinklers. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Hose Connection: Valve with threaded outlet matching fire hose coupling thread for attaching fire hose. B. Hose Station: Hose connection, fire hose rack, and fire hose. C. Working Plans: Documents, including drawings, calculations, and material specifications prepared according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 14 for obtaining approval from authorities having jurisdiction. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. General: Submit the following in accordance with Conditions of Contract and Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Requirements." B. Product Data: For the following: 1. Pipe and fitting materials and methods of joining for standpipe piping. 2. Pipe and fitting materials and methods of joining for sprinkler piping /1

2 3. Pipe hangers and supports. 4. Piping seismic restraints. 5. Valves, including specialty valves, accessories, and devices. 6. Alarm devices. Include electrical data. 7. Fire department connections. Include type; number, size, and arrangement of inlets; caps and chains; size and direction of outlet; escutcheon and marking; and finish. 8. Hose connections. Include size, type, and finish. 9. Hose stations. Include size, type, and finish of hose connections; type and length of fire hoses; finish of fire hose couplings; type, material, and finish of nozzles; and finish of rack. 10. Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other pertinent data. C. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction. Include hydraulic calculations, if applicable. D. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13 and NFPA 14. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping" and "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Underground Piping." E. Maintenance Data: For each type of standpipe and sprinkler specialty to include in maintenance manuals specified in Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Requirements." 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who has designed and installed firesuppression piping similar to that indicated for this Project and obtained design approval and inspection approval from authorities having jurisdiction. B. Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of working plans, calculations, and field test reports by a qualified professional engineer. Base calculations on results of firehydrant flow test. C. Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally qualified to practice in jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of fire-suppression piping that are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent. D. Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms whose equipment, specialties, and accessories are listed by product name and manufacturer in UL's "Fire Protection Equipment Directory" and FM's "Fire Protection Approval Guide" and that comply with other requirements indicated. E. Standpipe and Sprinkler Components: Listing/approval stamp, label, or other marking /2

3 by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. F. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. G. NFPA Standards: Equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, and testing complying with the following: 1. NFPA 13, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems." 2. NFPA 14, "Standpipe and Hose Systems." 1.6 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. 1. Sprinkler Cabinets: Finished, wall-mounting steel cabinet and hinged cover, with space for a minimum of six spare sprinklers plus sprinkler wrench. Include the number of sprinklers required by NFPA 13 and wrench for sprinklers. Include separate cabinet with sprinklers and wrench for each type of sprinkler on Project. Design sprinkler piping according to the following and obtain approval from authorities having jurisdiction: 1. Include losses through water-service piping, valves, and backflow preventers. 2. Components and Installation: Capable of producing piping systems with 175-psig (1200-kPa) minimum working-pressure rating, unless otherwise indicated. 2.3 PIPING MATERIALS A Refer to Part 3 "Piping Applications" Article for applications of pipe, tube, fitting, and joining materials. 2.4 PIPES AND TUBES A Ductile-Iron Pipe: AWWA C 151, push-on-joint type; with cement-mortar lining and seal coat according to AWWA C104. Include rubber gasket according to /6

7 AWWA C111. B. Standard-Weight Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53, ASTM A 135, or ASTM A 795; Schedule 40 in NPS 6 (DN150) and smaller, and Schedule 30 in NPS 8 (DN200) and larger. C. Schedule 30 Steel Pipe: ASTM A 135 or ASTM A 795, with wall thickness less than Schedule 40 and equal to or greater than Schedule 30 or ASTM A 795 and ASME B36.1 OM, Schedule 30 wrought-steel pipe. D. Schedule 10 Steel Pipe: ASTM A 135 or ASTM A 795, Schedule 10 in NPS 5 (DN125) and smaller and NFPA 13 specified wall thickness in NPS 6 to NPS 10 (DN150 to DN250). 2.5 PIPE AND TUBE FITTINGS A. Ductile-Iron Fittings: AWWA C11 0, ductile-iron or cast-iron push-on-joint type; or AWWA C153, ductile-iron, compact push-on-joint type. Include cement-mortar lining and seal coat according to AWWA C104 and rubber gaskets according to AWWA C111. B. Cast-Iron Threaded Flanges: ASME B16.1. C. Cast-Iron Threaded Fittings: ASME B16.4. D. Malleable-Iron Threaded Fittings: ASME B16.3. E. Steel, Threaded Couplings: ASTM A 865. F. Steel Welding Fittings: ASTM A 234/A 234M, ASME B16.9, or ASME B G. Steel Flanges and Flanged Fittings: ASME B16.5. H. Steel, Grooved-End Fittings: UL-Iisted and FM-approved, ASTM A 47 (ASTM A 47M), malleable iron or ASTM A 536, ductile iron; with dimensions matching steel pipe and ends factory grooved according to AWWA C JOINING MATERIALS A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for pipe-flange gasket materials and welding filler metals. B. Ductile-Iron, Flanged Joints: AWWA C115, ductile-iron or gray-iron pipe flanges, rubber gaskets, and steel bolts and nuts. 2.7 GENERAL-DUTY VALVES A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Valves" for gate, ball, butterfly, globe, and check valves not required to be UL listed and FM approved /7

8 2.8 FIRE-PROTECTION-SERVICE VALVES A. General: UL listed and FM approved, with minimum 175-psig (1200-kPa) nonshock working-pressure rating. Valves for grooved-end piping may be furnished with grooved ends instead of type of ends specified. B. Gate Valves, NPS 2 (DN50) and Smaller: UL 262; cast-bronze, threaded ends; solid wedge; OS&Y; and rising stem. C. Indicating Valves, NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) and Smaller: UL 1091; butterfly or ball-type, bronze body with threaded ends; and integral indicating device. 1. Indicator: Visual. D. Gate Valves, NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) and Larger: UL 262, iron body, bronze mounted, taper wedge, OS&Y, and rising stem. Include replaceable, bronze, wedge facing rings and flanged ends. E. Indicator-Post, Gate Valves: UL 262, iron body, bronze mounted, solid-wedge disc, and nonrising stem with operating nut and flanged ends. F. Swing Check Valves, NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) and Larger: UL 312, cast-iron body and bolted cap, with bronze disc or cast-iron disc with bronze-disc ring and flanged ends. 2.9 SPECIALTY VALVES A. Alarm Check Valves: UL 193, 175-psig (1200-kPa) working pressure; designed for horizontal or vertical installation, with cast-iron flanged inlet and outlet, bronze grooved seat with 0-ring seals, and single-hinge pin and latch design. Include trim sets for bypass, drain, electric sprinkler alarm switch, pressure gages, and fill-line attachment with strainer. 1. Option: Grooved-end connections for use with keyed couplings. 2. Drip Cup Assembly: Pipe drain with check valve to main drain piping SPRINKLERS A. Automatic Sprinklers: With heat-responsive element complying with the following: 1. UL 199, for applications except residential. B. Sprinkler Types and Categories: Nominal 1/2-inch (12.7-mm) orifice for "Ordinary" temperature classification rating, unless otherwise indicated or required by application. 1. Open Sprinklers: UL 199, without heat-responsive element. a. Orifice: 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), with discharge coefficient K between 5.3 and /8

9 C. Sprinkler types, features, and options include the following: 1. Flush ceiling sprinklers, including escutcheon. 2. Open sprinklers. 3. Pendent sprinklers. 4. Recessed sprinklers, including escutcheon. 5. Sidewall sprinklers. 6. Upright sprinklers. D. Sprinkler Finishes: Chrome-plated, bronze, and painted. E. Fire Hose: NFPA 1961 and UL 219, lined fire hose with couplings, gaskets, and nozzle. Include the following fire hose materials: a. Jacket: Natural, synthetic, or combination of threads. b. Lining: Rubber, plastic, or combination of compounds. c. Cover: Optional. 4. Nozzles: UL Drain Valves: UL Mountings: Pipe clamp or wall bracket for freestanding units. 7. Mountings: Pipe escutcheon for cabinet-mounted units. B. NPS 2-1/2 and NPS 1-1/2 (DN65 and DN40) Hose Stations: NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) hose valve with male threaded outlet, cap, and chain and NPS 1-1/2 (DN40) hose valve; hose rack with water-retention device and pins for folded, NPS 1-1/2 (DN40) lined hose; and NPS 1-1/2 (DN40) lined hose with swivel inlet coupling and nozzle. 1. Hose-Rack Finish: Red enamel. 2. Hose Valve and Trim Finish: Rough brass. 3. Fire Hose: Lined, 50-foot (15-m) length. 4. Fire Hose: Lined, 75-foot (23-m) length. 5. Fire Hose: Lined, 100-foot (30-m) length. 6. Nozzle: Brass, plain type FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTIONS A. Wall, Fire Department Connections: UL 405; cast-brass body with brass, wall, escutcheon plate; brass, lugged caps with gaskets and brass chains; and brass, lugged swivel connections. Include inlets with threads according to NFPA 1963 and /10

11 matching local fire department sizes and threads, outlet with pipe threads, extension pipe nipples, check devices or clappers for inlets, and escutcheon plate with marking "AUTO SPKR & STANDPIPE." 1. Type: Flush mounting. 2. Escutcheon Plate: Round. 3. Finish: Polished brass ALARM DEVICES A. General: Types matching piping and equipment connections. B. Water-Flow Indicators: UL 346; electrical-supervision, vane-type water-flow detector; with 250-psig (1725-kPa) pressure rating; and designed for horizontal or vertical installation. Include two single-pole, double-throw, circuit switches for isolated alarm and auxiliary contacts, 7 A, 125-V ac and 0.25 A, 24-V de; complete with factory-set, field-adjustable retard element to prevent false signals and tamperproof cover that sends signal if removed. C. Valve Supervisory Switches: UL 753; electrical; single-pole, double throw; with normally closed contacts. Include design that signals controlled valve is in other than fully open position. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Perform fire-hydrant flow test according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 291. Use results for system design calculations required in "Quality Assurance" Article in Part 1 of this Section. B. Report test results promptly and in writing. 3.2 EXAMINATION A. Examine roughing-in for hose connections and stations to verify actual locations of piping connections before installation. B. Examine walls and partitions for suitable thickness, fire- and smoke-rated construction, framing for hose-station cabinets, and other conditions where hose connections and stations are to be installed. C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.3 PIPING APPLICATIONS /11

12 A. Do not use welded joints with galvanized steel pipe. B. Flanges, unions, and transition and special fittings with pressure ratings the same as or higher than system's pressure rating may be used in aboveground applications, unless otherwise indicated. C. Piping between Fire Department Connections and Check Valves: Use galvanized, standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed couplings; and grooved joints. D. Underground Service-Entrance Piping: Use ductile-iron, push-on-joint pipe and fittings and restrained joints. E. Standpipes: Use one of the following: 1. NPS 4 (DN 100) and Smaller: Standard-weight steel pipe with threaded ends, cast- or malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded joints. 2. NPS 4 (DN100) and Smaller: Standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed couplings; and grooved joints. 3. NPS 4 (DN100) and Smaller: Galvanized, standard-weight steel pipe with threaded ends; cast- or malleable-iron threaded fittings; and threaded joints. 4. NPS 4 (DN100) and Smaller: Galvanized, standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed couplings; and grooved joints. 5. NPS 4 (DN100) and Smaller: Schedule 10 steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; and grooved joints. 6. NPS 5 and NPS 6 (DN125 and DN150): Standard-weight steel pipe with threaded ends, cast- or malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded joints. 7. NPS 5 and NPS 6 (DN125 and DN150): Standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed couplings; and grooved joints. 8. NPS 5 and NPS 6 (DN125 and DN150): Standard-weight steel pipe with plain ends, steel welding fittings, and welded joints. 9. Install shutoff valve, backflow preventer, pressure gage, drain, and other accessories indicated at connection to water-service piping. 3.7 PIPING INSTALLATION A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping installation. B. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical. 1. Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having jurisdiction. File written approval with Architect before deviating from approved working plans. C. Install underground service-entrance piping according to NFPA 24 and with restrained joints. D. Use approved fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes. E. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 (DN50) and smaller. Unions are not required on flanged devices or in piping installations using grooved joints. F. Install flanges or flange adapters on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) and larger connections. G. I. Install sprinkler zone control valves, test assemblies, and drain risers adjacent to standpipes when sprinkler piping is connected to standpipes. J. Install drain valves on standpipes. K. Install ball drip valves to drain piping between fire department connections and check valves. Drain to floor drain or outside building. L. Install alarm devices in piping systems. M.
