24 NFPA 17A Shut Off Devices Shutoff Devices On activation of any cooking equipment fire-extinguishing system, all sources of fuel and electric power that produce heat to all equipment protected by the system shall be shut down Gas appliances not requiring protection but located under the same ventilation equipment shall also be shut off Steam supplied from an external source shall not be required to be shut down Solid fuel cooking operations shall not be required to shut down Exhaust fans and dampers shall not be required to be shut down on system actuation as the systems have been tested under both zeroand high-velocity flow conditions If the expellant gas is used to pneumatically operate these devices, the gas shall be taken prior to its entry into the wet chemical tank Shutoff devices shall require manual resetting prior to fuel or power being restored

Main gas shutoff valves controlling several gas piping systems shall be readily accessible for operation and installed so as to be protected from physical damage. They shall be marked with a metal tag or other permanent means attached by the installing agency so that the gas piping systems supplied through them can be readily identified.
26 NFPA 17A Each protected cooking appliance, individual hood, and branch exhaust duct directly connected to the hood shall be protected by a system or systems designed for simultaneous operation Where two or more hazards can be simultaneously involved in fire by reason of their proximity, the hazards shall be protected by either of the following: (1) Individual systems installed on each hazard to operate simultaneously (2) A single system designed to protect all hazards that can be simultaneously involved Any hazard that will allow fire propagation from one area to another shall constitute a single fire hazard.

When manual actuation is used for cookingrelated protection, the manual actuation device shall be installed no more than 48 in. (1200 mm), and no less than 42 in. (1067 mm), above the floor and shall clearly identify the hazard protected Automatic systems protecting common exhaust ducts only shall not require a remote manual actuator The means for mechanical actuator(s) shall be mechanical and shall not rely on electrical power for actuation Electrical power shall be permitted to be used for manual actuation if a reserve power supply is provided or if supervision is provided as per Section 5.3.

(305 mm) into the exhaust duct opening and above the protected appliance shall be permitted to meet the requirements of
29 NFPA 17A Protection of Common Exhaust Ducts Common exhaust ducts shall be protected by one of the following methods: 1) *Simultaneous operation of all independent hood, duct, and appliance protection systems 2) *Simultaneous operation of any hood, duct, and appliance protection system and the system's) protecting the entire common exhaust duct A fusible link or other mechanically operated heat detection device from the common duct fire-extinguishing system shall be located at each branch duct to common duct connection where electrical operation of the common duct fire-extinguishing system does not meet the requirements of
30 NFPA 17A Maintenance 7.3.2* A service technician who has the applicable manufacturer s listed installation and maintenance manual and service bulletins shall service the wet chemical fire-extinguishing system at intervals no more than 6 months apart as outlined in * At least semiannually, maintenance shall be conducted in accordance with the manufacturer s listed installation and maintenance manual Maintenance shall include the following: 1) A check to see that the hazard has not changed 2) An examination of all detectors, the expellant gas containers), the agent container's), releasing devices, piping, hose assemblies, nozzles, signals, all auxiliary equipment, and the liquid level of all nonpressurized wet chemical containers 3) *Verification that the agent distribution piping is not obstructed
31 Maintenance Kidde Preparation for servicing and testing the xv Control System 1) Disconnect the high-pressure nitrogen tubing from the XV Control System.
32 Maintenance Kidde 2) Verify that the system design and installation are adequate to protect the hazard area and that the installation conforms to the instructions in this manual. Some of the items to verify are: a) All equipment requiring fire protection within the hazard area is protected. b) There have been no unauthorized alterations to the protected area or equipment, or to the wet chemical system, that render the fire suppression system ineffective or non-operational. c) All Cylinder Mounting Brackets are securely fastened to a wall or other structural member. d) All nozzles are properly aimed, secured and located within the proper distance from the protected equipment. Each nozzle should be clean and equipped with a foil seal cap (if applicable). e) The agent distribution piping is properly sized for the number and type of nozzles required. f) All piping joints and pipe supports are securely fastened to prevent wet chemical leakage and hazardous movement during discharge.
33 Maintenance Kidde g) The pipe lengths, sizes, fittings and material are as specified in this Manual. h) The number, type, and placement of detectors are suitable for all hazards within the hazard area. i) The Remote Manual Release, if used, is located in a path of exit or egress and is clearly identified. j) Stainless steel control cable lengths and Corner Pulley counts are within listed limits. Conduit runs should be clean and secure. k) All wiring is in compliance with local codes. l) All field wiring is free of ground fault or short-circuit conditions.
34 Maintenance Kidde m) No branch circuits exist in the wiring to the detectors or to the Solenoid. n) All auxiliary components such as Pressure Operated Releases are secure and show no evidence of physical damage. o) All system components and installation material are as specified in this manual.

36 Maintenance Kidde 3) Remove the cover from the XV Control System. Install Keeper Pin. 4) Remove the System Nitrogen Cartridge (P/N ) 5) Check flat gasket inside valve body. If damaged, replace. 6) Verify installation of the lockout screws for appropriate usage 7) Remove the System Valve Actuators (SVA) from all cylinders.

38 Maintenance Kidde 8) Install cylinder valve protection plates. 9) Disconnect Discharge Adapter Kit (agent piping) from all cylinders. Note: Disconnecting the Discharge Adapter Kit typically involves removing cylinders. 10)Install the Anti-Recoil Plate ARMING THE XV CONTROL SYSTEM Set the detection beams by turning the applicable ratchet spools counterclockwise Tighten the line until the beam reaches the Stop. Do not over tighten. Note: In long cable lines (over 125 ft. [38 m]) there will be stretch in the control cable and in the loops for the detectors. It is important to ensure the control cable is tight without over tightening. CAUTION: The actuation latch must be in the horizontal position. If it is in any position other than horizontal, the system could malfunction.
39 Maintenance Pyrochem SEMI-ANNUAL MAINTENANCE 1) Check that the hazard area has not changed. 2) Check that the system has not been tampered with, i.e., nozzles removed, nozzles not aimed properly, piping not supported properly, blow off caps in place. 3) Check the entire system for mechanical damage. 4) Check all nozzle orifices to make certain they are not plugged. Replace blow off caps or O-ring if necessary. 5) Check the solenoid monitor.
40 Maintenance Pyrochem SEMI-ANNUAL MAINTENANCE 6) Disconnect the control head or pneumatic tubing from the valve cap assembly of each agent cylinder. Remove the carbon dioxide pilot cartridge in the control head. Remove the safety pin from the slide plate. Actuate the control head to ensure it is functioning properly. Make certain the gas shut-off valve and remote pull station are functioning properly. 7) Inspect the pulley elbows for excessive grease buildup. Clean elbows if necessary. Replace fusible links. (They must be replaced semi-annually per NFPA 96.) Visually inspect thermal detectors. 8) Reinstall the carbon dioxide pilot cartridge, reconnect the control head, and replace the control head cover and nylon tie. 9) Inspect the cylinder pressure. Tap the gauge lightly to ensure the needle is moving freely. If the gauge shows a loss in pressure indicated by the needle being below the green band, the tank should be removed and recharged per the SYSTEM RECHARGE section of Chapter VI
41 Maintenance Pyrochem ANNUAL MAINTENANCE 1) Inspect as per semi-annual maintenance instructions. Do not reconnect control head at this time. 2) Disconnect the discharge piping from the valve outlet. Using air or nitrogen, blow out the piping. Replace all nozzle caps. 3) Fixed temperature sensing elements of the fusible alloy type must be replaced, at a maximum, annually. It is recommended that they be replaced semi-annually, or more frequently, if necessary, to assure proper operation of the system. 4) Test thermal detectors and remote pull stations per SYSTEM CHECKOUT AFTER INSTALLATION section located in Chapter IV (System Installation) of this manual. Per NFPA 72, two (2) or more detectors per circuit should be tested. Note individual detector location and date of testing. Within 5 years, all detectors in system must be tested.
42 Maintenance Pyrochem ANNUAL MAINTENANCE 5)Replace the carbon dioxide pilot cartridge and O-ring (Part No ), recording the date of installation on the cartridge with a felt-tipped marker. See detailed cartridge installation instructions listed on Page 4-18 (System Installation). CAUTION: Before screwing the carbon dioxide pilot cartridge into the actuator, ensure that the actuator has an O-ring installed. NOTE: Methods and frequency of inspection, testing and maintenance of detectors should be in accordance with NFPA-72. CAUTION: Before continuing, remove the cover from the control head and insert the safety pin in the hole in the slide plate above the latching arm. This will secure the system, preventing accidental discharge.
43 NFPA 17A Maintenance - Record Keeping The maintenance report, including any recommendations, shall be filed with the owner or with the owner's representative The owner or owner's representative shall retain all maintenance reports for a period of 1 year after the next maintenance of that type required by the standard * Each wet chemical system shall have a tag or label securely attached, indicating the month and year the maintenance is performed and identifying the person performing the service. Only the current tag or label shall remain in place.
44 Maintenance-Detection NFPA 17A 7.3.4*Fixed temperature-sensing elements of the fusible metal alloy type shall be replaced at least semiannually from the date of installation, or more frequently, if necessary. They shall be destroyed when removed The year of manufacture and the date of installation of the fixed temperature-sensing element shall be marked on the system inspection tag. The tag shall be signed or initialed by the installer Fixed temperature-sensing elements other than the fusible metal alloy type shall be permitted to remain continuously in service, provided they are inspected and cleaned or replaced if necessary in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, every 12 months or more frequently to ensure proper operation of the system.
45 NFPA 17A Maintenance-Detection At a minimum, inspection and testing for restorable-type heat detectors shall include the following: 1) A visual inspection to determine whether there is damage to the detector or buildup of foreign debris 2) An operational/functional test in accordance with the detector manufacturer's testing instructions 3) A calibration verification test, if applicable, in accordance with the detector manufacturer's instructions Non restorable heat detectors shall be functionally tested in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations Heat detectors and all associated wiring that show signs of fire damage shall be tested in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and replaced if necessary.
