1 Model Number: M21E-24-DIN Description: The product is a loop powered device which controls an unsupervised dual pole output channel suitable to manage 24VAC loads. The M21E-24-DIN is micro-controller operated, includes solid state short circuit isolator and it is compatible with 2/5 series and Advanced protocols. Output functions are related to specific device address within the 1-99 range, selected by means of the code wheel switches. Isolator circuit operates automatically and prevents the product from not working regardless of whether the short circuit occurs on the incoming or outgoing loop wiring; isolation state is signalled by switching on the LED yellow steadily, see Reference Table for additional information and recommendations. The device is designed to be mounted onto a standard "Top Hat" style 35mm x 7.5mm DIN rail; address switches and tricolour LED (red, yellow, green) are both located on the front side. Appropriate communication sequences between the product and the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) (see Reference Table for more information) allow the panel itself to control the output and set the LED configuration. The advanced protocol extension contains a rapid alarm or fault detection feature which enables any device to signal the control panel when the device detects an alarm or fault condition. The alarm/fault condition represents a condition in the device which has been defined to require attention from the panel. This signal can be generated by any device where an alarm or fault condition occurs. This feature is configurable on customer request. The external EEPROM can be read or written by means of advanced protocol commands. Not all of the bytes are read and/or write accessible through the 2 series advanced protocol (refer to Parameter Table). Four bytes in the EEPROM are used as a serial number, which can be read at panel start-up to detect double addresses. The digital units corresponding to PW4 are multiples of 16 microseconds, i.e. 3 s corresponds to 19 digital units, or 9 s to 56 digital units (for a device with 3 s time base). Similarly they are multiples of 8 s for a 15 s PW1 time base product and 24 s with a 45 s PW1 time base product. Reference Table Drawing no. 2 Output Channel operation (5 series protocol) The output module features a double pole contact relay, with contacts rated at 25VAC, and a couple of terminals for ground connections. The output relay is normally de-energised. It is switched on by command from the FACP. Once on, it remains latched in the on state until a reset command is issued from the FACP. This output is not intended for applications which require wiring supervision. WARNING: the contact is factory set to the off position but, due to either shipment or installation handling, it might travel to the on position. Output channel status should be checked before powering any circuit served by the output channel itself. LED product operation LED is controlled both by FACP and short circuit isolator (5 Series mode only). 5 Series mode is left once the Reset Power On command is received. In case of conflicts in 5 Series mode, short circuit isolator has higher priority than FACP. LED control (5 series mode) Panel Command LED off (isolator normal) LED off (isolator open) LED on (isolator normal) LED on (isolator open) LED blink (isolator normal) LED blink (isolator open) LED state off yellow on green on yellow on green blink yellow on Note: EEPROM error is a fault condition Rotary switch selection A number of actions is performed internally by the device, each time the rotary switch address is changed. They are summarized below: 1. set 99 as maximum address available in 5 Series mode 2. if device is not in internal fault state, set sub-address = enable answer to address in 5 Series mode if device address greater than let the device change the LED color to yellow for faults or isolator active 5. disable latches and interrupts. Pending interrupts and latches are not cleared 6. respond to Read Trouble Latch Tens and Read Trouble Latch Units 7. send the startup interrupt (if bit in Device Configuration set) 2 of 12 LIFE SAFETY

3 LED control (advanced protocol mode) The LED state is yellow blinking in case of EEPROM error. The FACP controls the LED state after issuing a Reset Power On command. On Read Presence for sensors and modules with its tens address, this device staggers LED activations based on its units address. This spreads current loads over a longer time to prevent excessive current consumption. The nominal time delay step is 16ms x units, for example 32ms when units = 2. This device responds only to Read Presence for modules with its tens address. Terminal Layout 1. Loop -, output 2. Loop +, switched output 3. Loop -, input 4. Loop +, input 5. 6 Because a partial short circuit resistance is not always enough to pull the line below 5V (minimum switching threshold) an appropriate panel monitor function is required. The panel can recognise a partial short circuit by the following methods: Monitoring the line voltage at the end of the loop Monitoring if a device goes missing Looking for extra current during the 5V address sequence If a partial short circuit condition is determined to be present the panel should produce a reset pulse to open the isolators (> 4ms) so that the switch off resistance is put between the line positive input and output. With this procedure a partial short circuit is properly is managed. The FACP must restore the devices to the correct condition that was present before the short circuit was determined. The MOSFET used for short circuit isolation on this product can be controlled (command 11 bit 6,5=1) via a pin from the microcontroller to the gate of the MOSFET. Automatic control of the isolator occurs by the voltage monitoring circuit in the product, which also controls the gate of the MOSFET. The status of the isolator is provided by reading the control point at the gate of the MOSFET and does not always represent the precise electronic status of the isolator. When the Read Input Value command is used to read the isolator status, please pay attention to the notes below: When the isolators are controlled by the device at start-up or after a command 11 with bit 6,5=11 Bit 7 = means isolators are open or are opening with the specified time delay (t x ) after the detection of a short circuit or during loop start-up Bit 7 = 1 means isolators are closed or are closing with the specified time delay (t y ) after the detection of the end of a short circuit or during loop start-up or after the release of the isolator open control by the panel (command to return to automatic control given by the panel and no short circuit) When the isolators are controlled by the panel after a command 11 with bit 6,5=1 Bit 7 = until control is given again to the device by the command 11 with bit 6,5=11 6 of 12 LIFE SAFETY
