1 ADMINISTRATOR S WEEKLY REPORT # April 26 th to May 2 nd, 2010 CALLS FOR SERVICE This Week 2010 YTD % Change Fire % Aid % Other % Total % Last Week: The Aerial Apparatus Team, led by AC Gerber, travelled to the Rosenbauer plant in Wyoming, Minnesota for the inspection and acceptance testing of the apparatus (ladder truck) prior to its shipment. As a result of the review, 82 items were identified for adjustment or correction. We anticipate a revised schedule and anticipated delivery date next week. Administrator Robertson attended the Washington Cities Insurance Authority annual meeting and training sessions on Wednesday, April 28 th in Yakima. This is the first of several mandatory meetings and training sessions, held throughout the year, to comply with our insurer s membership regulations. Following those meetings, he attended the Association of Washington Cities annual Labor Relations Institute until Friday. On Tuesday, April 27 th, Chief Laatsch attended the Zone 3 Operations Chief s meeting. On Wednesday, April 28 th, Chief Laatsch attended the King County Fire Chief s Executive Board meeting. This Week: The Accreditation Category Managers Team will meet on Tuesday, May 4 th at Headquarters Station 31. The Administrative Staff will attend First Aid and CPR classes on Wednesday, May 5 th at Headquarters Station 31.

2 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Monday, April 26 th, at 8:26 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to an ill male at Wesley Homes. Firefighters examined an elderly male and provided basic life support. The patient was transported to Valley Medical Center by private ambulance. Aid Call: (Algona) On Tuesday, April 27 th at 11:19 a.m., firefighters examined and treated a young female for abdominal pain. The patient was transported to Auburn Regional Medical Center (ARMC) by private ambulance for further treatment. Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, April 28 th at 1:45 p.m., firefighters and King County paramedics evaluated and treated a middle aged male complaining of chest pain. The patient was transported to ARMC by Medic-6. Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, April 29 th, at 7:55 p.m., firefighters responded for a burn victim. Firefighters observed an adult male with burns to his left thigh. The patient was smoking in the bathroom when he caught himself on fire. The patient was treated and transported to ARMC by the VRFA. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Friday, April 30 th at 11:36 a.m., firefighters responded for a male with decreased sensation in his lower legs. The patient was treated and then transported to Saint Francis Hospital by private ambulance. Illegal Burn: (Auburn): On Saturday, May 1 st at 4:59 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of an illegal burn and found a small yard waste fire that was being attended to by a local resident. Firefighters assisted the resident in extinguishing the fire and educated the resident on burning regulations. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Sunday, May 2 nd, at 1:20 p.m. firefighters responded to reports of an adolescent with burns. VRFA Firefighters and King County paramedics treated the patient at the scene and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center by King County Medics. 3 Basic firefighter training for two new firefighters in preparation for state academy There are 23 personnel actively involved in the JATC program (Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee) The second round of live fire training at the North Bend Fire Training Academy was completed. Preparation for CBT Practical Evaluations was completed. Training/Safety staff evaluated integrated communications systems for BC Day. Basic firefighter training for two recently graduated recruit firefighters preparing for transition and assignment to shift. Fire Marshal s Office: Staff completed six (6) new construction inspections. Inspections included six (6) in Auburn, zero (0) in Pacific and zero (0) in Algona. Staff completed five (5) business license reviews, zero (0) Auburn, zero (0) Algona, zero (0) new and five (5) renewals in Pacific. Staff completed twenty four (24) annual inspections, twenty four (24) in Auburn, zero (0) in Pacific and zero (0) in Algona: Fire Marshal Stottlemyre and Assistant Fire Marshal Lee attended 2009 Significant Changes to the Fire Code in Redmond. The course was jointly sponsored by the Washington State Association of Fire Chiefs and Washington State Association of Fire Marshal s. Public Education With the assistance of Captain Connell from P & L, PIEO Staff provided live fire extinguisher training for 30 employees of McKesson Medical/Surgical Supply. PIEO Staff edited stories and took photographs for the June edition of Fire Watch. PIE Specialists and PIEO Staff continued teaching fire and life safety curriculum to first and third grade students in the VRFA service area. Schools visited included Washington, Buena Vista, Lea Hill and Pioneer elementary schools.

5 Crews from Stations 31, 32, 33, and 38 taught fire and life safety curriculum to kindergarten students at Washington, Dick Scobee, Chinook, Ilalko and Alpac Elementary schools. Station 31 conducted a station tour for a group of home school kids. Station 34 conducted a station tour for 30 pre-school age kids. Fire Investigation: During this reporting period, the South King Fire Investigation Task Force (SKFITF) responded to two (2) calls for service in the VFRA response area. The ignition source for a SE Auburn structure fire was a meat smoker placed too close to exterior vents. The fire was ruled accidental. The cause determination for a vacant Algona house fire was incendiary. Witnesses reported seeing juveniles leaving the scene during the early stages of the fire. Investigators are working with Algona Police to follow-up on this investigation. Planning and Logistics: The Accreditation Category Manager meeting is being conducted on Tuesday, May 4 th at 3 p.m. at Station 31. This is an opportunity for Category managers to get additional clarification on the steps necessary to initiate the self assessment process. Work still needs to proceed on risk analysis and standards of cover which will affect some of the self assessment criteria. P & L has completed the inventory standardization on all VRFA fire engines. Each engine now has a consistent inventory that is unique to that apparatus. Each engine has also been upgraded with Holmatro rescue tool mounting hardware to organize each of the rescue tool compartments. A/C Gerber, B/C Boogard, Capt Carolan and Kent Maintenance Supervisor Tom Arnson completed the final inspection of the new Rosenbauer Aerial on April 26, 27 & 28 at the Wyoming, Minnesota plant. There were a number of conditions that we noted during the final inspection that need to be addressed at the factory. We also identified a few change orders that are working their way through the approval process. The owner supplied appliances order for Station 32 has been placed with the vendor. The office furniture order has also been placed with another vendor.

6 The 900 gallon diesel fuel tank on the 125KW Kohler generator at Station 34 has been pumped in preparation of its move to the newly remodeled Station 32. The Generator move is scheduled to take place on The City of Auburn s Green River Planning Group meetings are now on hold until later this year as the flood season has now passed. King County will not be issuing any more updates until preparations begin for the next flood season this fall.
